That's a great achievement for Nadal. Congratulations to him. To do that after the layoff was a great turnaround. 2013 has been a defining year for his career. I do consider him the top player in the world again these days. Yet in order of importance, I'd still put winning the next AO at (1) getting the #1 ranking at (2) and winning the WTF at (3) in order of priorities for him. I think all these top guys are looking a bit ahead as they start to ramp back up for the 2014 AO. There's no rest for the weary so to speak.

Good to see the non-Nadal fans' congratulating and acknowledging he deserved the #1 in this thread. Especially because you didn't have to. Noted.

Not one bit but at least I defended him during that period (when so many people said he was done). It sure looks like he has increased the # of his fans exponentially this year ;)

Congrats to all Rafa's fans on here - your boy more than deserved it.

Everyone else is going to have to work that little bit harder.

We should appreciate the talent of one Capy. He did the impossible. He's made all the courts slow to suit his game.

And congratulate of being No.1 in the world. You deserve it.

Fed would be spanked, you know that right?

Rafa has been #1 for 107 weeks now. Two more weeks and he'll tie Borg on the all time list with 109.

He'll start to improve his overall tennis resume??????? The guy has an amazing tennis resume already. What an utterly stupid thing to say.

He already has achieved better numbers than his opponents in many many areas. He has set a slew of records that will likely never be bettered, or at least won't be for a very long time.

I'm definitely over the moon!!! Very very happy. I didn't really know what to expect after his break. I knew he was a fantastic tennis player and could continue to achieve much if he was healthy but no one really knew how his knees would hold up. I think I hoped more than I expected. One of the best things about this year has been his joy. Every time he won something there was just so much joy on his face and in his demeanour and it was wonderful to see. :)

He didn't play Miami and lost in the first round of Wimbledon. Don't exaggerate too much.

Thats what I meant! No way Federer would be able to push it to 5. Even 4 is highly doubtful.

The dude's gonna lose 1000 points from those Challenger events he entered in February, then a victory in Indian Wells and, as always, the entire clay court season.

Djokovic apart from the AO and MC has nothing to defend.

So good luck with Nadal holding onto his ranking for long.

He's almost certainly going to run (most of) the table on clay next year again, and given that he'll gain points in Australia and Miami, he's likely to hold onto the #1 ranking at least until the next US Open.

That said, with the points Djokovic has wracked up since the US Open, there's a good chance that Djokovic will get it back at some point next fall.

Nadal still has the Australian Open yet. Djokovic has Dubai to defend also.

the whole concept of "defending" points is way overblown. by this time next year, the best player of 2014 will be YE#1 and all results from 2013 will be eradicated. if rafa wants to retain his YE#1 ranking, he'll have to earn it over 12 months -- just like novak, andy, or any other player.

Exactly. He doesn't have to defend his points, he just has to win more than anyone else :)

Challenger events? what are you talking about? Get your facts right before speaking: Those tournaments he played in Latin America were ATP 250 and 500...
I have never seen a Top 5 player take part in the minor leagues (Challengers)

Gongrats to Nadal! But after AO don't like his chances (despite Wimbledon, nothing to defend) to keep that number 1 spot. Nole's is on a roll and I m gonna make a veryyyy sick prediction that Djokovic is actually gonna achieve GYGS next year. SW 19 is actually only question mark to me actually. He's gonna take out Nadal at RG next year:). Let's see what's gonna happen. Novak 2.0 is the name of the game next year:) Dunno why I have that 'sick' feeling but...I don't have crystal ball.

We'll see who takes out who in 2014. I'm hoping for Rafa to take down Djokovic at the Australian Open and complete his 2nd career grand slam. Then deny Djokovic the French Open once again.

Are you saying Novak tanked the year out of fear to Nadal?

No one is saying Nadal doesn't have a Lot to defend.

Nadal fans are enjoying the culmination of a long hard year back. It's far exceeded expectations, and a most welcome surprise.

I for one, am enjoying today.

I have a feeling Novak will never have a 2011 year again. No one has had 2 years like that in tennis history.

    Thanks!!!
Now I am curious if Rafa or Novak will play tournament before AO.
