"World No.4 Rafael Nadal has given his word he will be ready to play at the Australian Open in January, tournament director Craig Tiley said Tuesday. The 11-time Grand Slam champion hasn't appeared on court since a shock defeat to 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol in the second round of Wimbledon in June.

He has spent the five intervening months rehabilitating a chronic knee injury, and recently vowed to return at an exhibition in Abu Dhabi starting Dec 27. "We are fortunate that we start in January," Tiley said. "Players have taken some time off so that they are not injured, like Rafa Nadal, whom I spoke to last week and he is going to be ready to play."

The 26-year-old Spaniard won the Australian Open in 2009 but lost last year's final at Melbourne Park to world No.1 Novak Djokovic, in one of the most thrilling five-setters of 2012."

"given his word" and "vow" make it seem like over compensating, I truly hope he is there and at least well enough to make the 2nd week.

The past 5 months have been interesting but a 4-man tour is infinitely more interesting than a 3-man tour.

I don't see him getting past the quarters, he's just started practicing now while the other top three have been playing all year.

Unless a lower seeded player sweeps through the draw or upsets him an early round I dont see him losing in the quarters if he reaches that round. 5-8 seeds if all play:

    Berdych- his pigeon.
Ferrer- only 1 win over Nadal in the last 5 years, and Nadal was definitely injured in that one loss.
Tsonga- out of form, wont even reach quarters probably.
Del Potro- still out of shape, will wither in heat and sticky conditions, especialy if he plays someone like Rafa in best of 5.

IMO a loss at the semis would be a successful tournament for him. Actually winning it seems out if reach though.

I heard Clarky say that Nadal will win the Australian Open without dropping a set.

    Is this true?

Will be interesting to see how he lays after so long out of action. Draw will be important. I think the best for Rafa fans is to be ready for the worst and hope for the best. Not easy to return just before a slam when you've been out for nearly 6 months.

Talking about free rides, did you know that Djoko played 30 matches vs top 8 players in 2012? That's quite a lot when you consider the most Fed has ever played over a season is 22 (24 for Nadal). It seems that the field is actually getting stronger and more consistent all the time.

Nadal's only won clay tournaments over the past 2 years now. The field is getting stronger, he's getting older and spending more time on the shelf...the sport moves quickly...not sure I can see Nadal surpassing Federer's 17 Slams at this point. He'd have to win 7 more Slams to do that. With Djokovic around along with Murray's confidence having risen, hard to see Nadal winning 18 Slams.

    This is Nadal here.

You know, the guy who DEMOLISHED the reigning World No. 1 GOAT in his prime at the AGE OF 17.

If you think taking half a year off of tennis is going to slow this man down than you're an IDIOT.

If anything the rest of the tour should be even more scared of him because of this.

No, that would mean the top 8 are upset less than in prior years and therefore reach the quarters more often. Therefore, the field would be weaker.

If the top players are upset constantly than that means the field is weak.

Just look at the WTA in the past few years, everybody was complaining that the field was absolute weak sauce because the top players kept getting upset early by really low ranked people; no one was praising the field for it's "depth".

Thing is, Nadal isn't a young stud anymore. He's actually getting up in age and becoming more and more prone to injuries. Notice how each season sees him taking more and more time away from the game because of fatigue and injuries? It's just life. If anything, young guys are salivating at the chance to get a shot at Nadal. Nobody is afraid of him off clay. He's certainly not an unstoppable beast on grass as Djokovic and Rosol demonstrated. And any number of players can wipe him out on hardcourts hence the reason Nadal hasn't won a hardcourt Masters since Indian Wells 2009 nor has won a hardcourt Slam since USO 2010. Actually, he hasn't won anything off clay since Japan 2010.

Not true. For example, he had serious problems in 2009, and was pretty fine in 2010 and 2011, he did not take more time off because of injures those years than in 2009.

And on hard courts he pretty much only lost to Djokovic last year, and this year he only lost to Fed, Djokovic.

If the top players are upset a lot it means that the other players are closer in ability to the top players and it is more difficult to win a tournament.

How come the top 20 is full of consistent players too, then? Some have had dips into the top ten, too.

If they're closer to their ability maybe it's because those top players are less good.

Two all time greats are playing in this era, with one tagging along behind them. Of course it's going to be harder for anybody outside the top four/six/eight to shine.

LOL it is you and other Del Potro homers who need to be realistic. For the last 2-3 years we having been hearing Del Potro this, Del Potro that, well he has been back over 2 years now from his major injury, he is not "coming back" anymore, and he still hasnt rejoined the top tier, and isnt even the best of the second tier right now. Del Potro hasnt destroyed anyone of note in eons, and he rarely even beats anyone of note anymore, this isnt 2009 anymore. Played well at the WTF and still lost yet again to Ferrer (the aforementioned best of the second tier above people like Del Potro right now, despite that he is virtually no threat for a slam), and played well vs Djokovic then gets tired in the middle of the SECOND set and falls easily after that. How is he going to last best of 5 in hot sticky conditions when he isnt even fit enough to not get tired in the middle of best of 3 set matches today, sorry even Nadal out for half a year will be in better shape than that easily.

Del potro did give Nadal 2 tough matches at Wimbledon 2011 and DC 2011. Not saying he'd destroy Nadal, but he has a chance if Nadal is rusty. Dunno if The AO really suits Delpo though.

Its like Del Potro is a video game character and he runs out of energy and fails to reach the end level. He almost never wins slams or masters. The Olympics too, lost 17-19 in the final set of the semi. Just can't finish the job. Very unreliable player.

You know he probably means Federer and Nadal and Djokovic is the one tagging behind (unless he's a nad hating troll), and despite what you say about Nadal being finished what he has achieved so far has been greater than Djokovic. Never mind about what could be, this is now. But you'll deny that and claim Djokovic is in fact the GOAT

Though I don't get what he means by one tagging behind, i take that to mean he's not an all time great.

He will be before his career is over.

And I knew who he was referring to; I just wanted to see what order he put them in(you got the order wrong,Towser).
