    I guess it's official

    Ben Rothenberg ‏@BenRothenberg 35m
Rafael Nadal set to return to Miami next year to compete for one of the few big titles in the sport that has eluded him. Skipped it in 2013

    https://twitter.com/BenRothenberg/status/406909005714698241

so he has Melbourne , Miami, and Wimbledon as openings

Sorry, am I missing something here?

He's not old enough to start pick and choose the mandatory tournaments he wants to play. Therefore expect him at all the slams, Masters (+ Monte Carlo), 4 ATP 500 events, 1-2 ATP 250's and assuming he does OK...the WTF too.

Well he should be gunning for Miami more than any of the other master events imo, so good decision.

Rafa is not old, but he has had a long career and has played a lot of matches. Rafa is allowed to skip two Masters 1000 tournament in 2014 because:
¤ he has played more than 600 matches during his career,
¤ has 12 years of service.
See the ATP Rulebook, page 12.

This. Nadal can skip MC (or substitute it for a 500) and 2 other MS1000 tournaments without penalty - if he desired.

Monte Carlo Masters 1000 is not a mandatory tournament.

Rafa's crazy schedule will catch up to him once again. Looks like another season like 2009.

Yep. That's why I stated he can skip it and 2 0ther MS1000 tournaments :)

He's only required to play 6 of 9 - assuming MC was one skipped.

Where did you see his schedule???

The ATP has made players' life hard!
The commitment player (top 30) has to play:
    ¤ 4 GS tournaments
    ¤ 8 mandatory Masters 1000
¤ 4 ATP-500 tournaments (one of which after the USO)
    ¤ WTF, if qualified

The rankings is based on calculating the points from 4 GS tournaments, 8 mandatory Masters, the WTF and player's best 6 results from all ATP-500 & ATP-250.

This. He should not be allowed to pick and choose.

because it matters greatly to the number one ranking...he now has 3 big tournaments with opportunities to pick up major points...he chose not to play last year (so no, it wasn't obvious), is playing this year...so again, if you care about who's ranked #1 in tennis it matters
