Nadal is now #1 for the year's race... and with his success in Rome and most likely the FO, federer will be a good distance away.

Potentially, I see Nadal claiming #1 in the ATP rankings and the 2007 race by the end of the year if Federer doesn't win both Wimbledon and USO. The way federer's been playing he'll be lucky to win one more tournament this year!!!!

Also, Nadal has played 7 tournaments this year. Federer has only played 5 and is only 20 points or so behind Nadal. This is why the Race doesn't mean anything.

a lil too dramatic. roger will win more. its like fliping a coin. a tail may come once in a while. but heads will come right back. so will roger. he is alway the odds on favorite to win (off clay)

And Berdych was "tops" in the race in early January. Doesn't mean squat. Get back to me in September and then we'll talk about this.

I expect Nadal to disappear off the map once clay season ends, as he did last year. Federer will continue to build on his points lead for the REAL #1 race. Troll.

Not if Canas and Volandri don't take him out instead.. Imagine, Volandri taking out Federer at Wimbledon.. that will be sight to remember!

See? I'm not the only one who thinks you're a complete troll.

This is a pretty clear example of trolling.

You might have a point if Fed loses early at the French and gets upset at Wimbledon somehow. But for that to realistically happen Nadal has to win the French and another slam. With Fed's current state of form and confidence it's a question mark. It's no longer a certainty like in year's past.

Nadal is now better than Fed at hard court Masters tourneys (imo). With Cincy, Canada, and Madrid still to be decided, the points race will be VERY interesting.

Will it be decided at Shanghai? That would be fun.

Exactly my point! I never said Fed wouldnt be #1 at year end, but I like Nadal's chances a lot. And I think it would only require Nadal to win the FO and get deep in one other slam, maybe SF or QF. He has master series wins that help a lot, while fed got knocked out in 3 consecutive masters already.

Whats the logic behind statements that Nadal will disappear after clay season just like last year? You guys think past results are good indication for the future? How about this... Roger has lost approx 1300points in last 5months in the "real" race. Let him continue like this and in 10months(October) Hes lost 2600points. In the rankings that would mean 8300-2600=5700. Wow! Its going to get close....yeah I know, looks retarded. Its all based on Rogers past performance this year. Just like your opinions are based on Nadals last year results.

I dont think this topic is trolling. Its reality. Federer has had a bad year. You cant deny that. Nadal is having the best year ever so far. You never know what is going to happen. Everything is possible. Lets wait till Wimbledon and continue this debate. I also admit that the tables can turn. What if Federer wins FO?

Nadal is playing great tennis but he is still vulnerable on every other surface outside clay.

Nadal is flying high now and Fed is struggling. It was the opposite not so long ago and I think the pendulum will swing back in Fed's favor.

    when clay season ends...
nadal will be rendered ineffective and federer would be a beast...
but clay season is a pretty big deal so nadal and most clay specialists can survive in the rankings without making a huge dent in the hard court season

Uh since when does having won the only slam so far in the year constitute having a "bad year"? Only by Federer's godly standards that he set the last few years is it relatively bad.

Agree with Phil that we'll really get an idea of who will finish #1 this year after the USO. In any case, my money is on Federer, to finish 1 again. But yes, his throne is definitely been looking more vulnerable this year than it ever was.

Nadal will take over the No. 1 ranking and it will be most deserved. He is the best player on earth and doesn't drop losses to marginal players like Federer does. Federer would wet his pants if he had to play Nadal in the USO final.

Good thing for Fed knowing that that will never happen, as Nadal is just a spectator every second Sunday in New York.

Ahh, Nadal did not do much until spring when Federer got kicked out early and then bursts out on clay. Coincidence?

No that Brad Gilbert shares my views that Nadal will be #1, is this post still considered trolling?

Note to the people calling me a troller: Just cause you don't agree doesn't maen it isnt true.

Posting your opinions and facts is not trolling of course and only time will tell if Nadal will be number 1 by the end of the year. The Summer will make things clearer :D

Not at all. How is it his fault that Roger was lousy enough to lose to Guillermo Canas? And can he help it if he's better than Roger is on clay?

Nadal was a legend before he was 20 - who cares what number he eventually arrives at in the race - nothing can take away his fantastic achievments

Nadal's better than Federer on hard-courts? What a laugh. I guess that explains why Nadal won the AO without losing a set. Oh, wait, that was Federer.

And the AO was supposed to favor Nadal's game. Guess the guy just can't hack it in the slams outside of the FO.

Too bad you missed last year's Wimbledon final. ;-)

Nadal had mediocre results last fall and early this year. He wasn't playing badly, but he wasn't playing particularly well. He started playing well in Dubai (that's when he started "feeling his forehand"), and he's had some decent results since then, especially winning Indian Wells. And even though he won all the clay events he entered last year, his level of tennis is much higher this year.

If he keeps his current confidence and level of play heading into the summer, I think he'll give himself more chances on hardcourts than he has in the past. And even then he wasn't doing that badly, with five hardcourt titles, three of them at Masters Series events. He can play on hardcourts; his development is just lagging behind his claycourt play. But given the improvements he has made, particularly with his serve, backhand and volleys, I don't think we are going to see him "disppear" as many here predict. That's what everyone said after RG last year, and then he got to the Wimbledon final. Like it or not, he's going to be a factor on every surface and at every event his plays, if for no other reason than sheer stubborness. He hates to lose.

I guess indoor tournaments aren't Nadal's game. If it was outdoors in the heat, it would be a different story. Hopefully they make the Aussie Open an outdoor tournament again.
