Nadal probably feels a special connection with this Brazil event, because his number one goal is the Rio Olympics. Completely different event, but Brazil is Brazil. Its a special place for the reason that Nadal wants to be here in 2016 so badly. I'm not Nadal but this week's event means more to me than any event on the calendar, apart from Roland Garros.

That's the first time since 2004 that a Tennis TV is on the free-air channels in Brazil.

Tough to call. Looking at Nadal's results you're inclined to favour Nalbandian, but I watched his (or tried to, bring back blue clay!) second set against Bolelli and that wasn't impressive either.

Don't forget Nalbandian hasn't played much either lately, I think this is his first tournament of the season? Both players are rusty.

Given Nalbandian's questionable mental fortitude, especially against Nadal, I'm going with Nadal in 3.

It's in Nalby's hands. The outcome of this match will depend entirely on him.

Nadal loves playing Nalbandian, as the head2head shows, its in favor of Nadal. Nalbandian is known for making lots of errors. Sure, indoor suited Nalbandian (a long time ago anyway), but this is clay.

Under normal circumstances, it would be Rafa no question. However, with the courts and the balls being so problematic, it's hard to know how it'll go. The conditions are bad for both players but Rafa is so lacking in confidence right now, I'm nervous for him. I hope he wins, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nalbandian does.

He couldn't get the job done in straight sets against freaking Berlocq and a guy who played his first ever ATP tournament and you think he's gonig to lay a beatdown on Nalbandian?

Bookies must have forgotten who Rafael nadal is. Biggest bet in awhile today with rafa only at -200 against nalbandian on clay lol. $5,000 on rafa.

He is incapable of anything else.

Even if a player literally had the GOAT backhand ever, yet physically had no pec muscles and thus couldn't hit a forehand if he tried, Nadal would spin cross-court forehands to this guy's backhand.

He has a simple mind, he does what he knows how to do.

Agree, I think Rafa only has maybe 1 or 2 years left in his career. It is really sad since he is such a young guy. He doesn't have to worry about money anymore but I wonder what he will do for the rest of his life ?

I would give the edge to D-Nal today (and so would Rafa, if you bothered to watch his interview).
But it never ceases to amaze me here sometimes how people wallow in their (quite possibly premature) schadenfreude for the Rafanator. He wants to be in the 2016 Olympics; I am confident that with proper care he will reach his goal.
He has his foundation. And a piece of a school, academy, and football team already.
And there's this guy who won 5 or 6 RGs before him – Borg, was it? – who retired at 26 and went on to have an okay life.
    *smh*

    :-?

Nadal just confirmed what I said the other day, 'these courts play faster than the ones at the US-open'.

Errors all over the place. I get a feeling that if Nalbandian loses this, he's more losing to the name Nadal, than to the player. As is often the case. Because until now Nadal looks awful this match.

you can loop any ball to Nadal's BH and chances are an error comes back.

Some comments from the English announcer on my stream:

says stadium seats are full with more spectators sitting in the aisle...
also Nadal has been practicing at other courts not at the tourney site...
Thursday night Uncle Tony called a meeting of the players to discuss court conditions

Yes, very happy to see SN1 carrying this match, and live too, though I'm not the biggest Rafa fan. Just happy to see the match live.
