I'm betting on Nadal, but I think Soderling could make it interesting for a while (if he starts out well). He has the sort of big game to hurt Nadal and has the go-for-it attitude necessary for someone who can't outgrind Nadal.

I doubt he'll engage Nadal much in long rallies. If he's "on" it could be a fun contrast in styles. Then again if he's "off" and/or gets frustrated early, Nadal could run away with it.

Regardless of what game Soderling brings, Nadal in 3 easy sets.

  3. Nadal won their last match a few weeks ago on clay 6-1, 6-0. That probably says it all. Or most of it.

That was a revenge by Nadal for what happened at Wimbledon some time ago.

I am sure Soderling will have the same feelings of revenge for their last match, so Nadal will have to pay attention.

It is going to be an interesting match to gauge if Nadal is really getting close to his top clay court level. If so, he should win losing no more than 2 or 3 games per set. If he still struggles the match will be tighter.

    I didn't know that.

Like I said, I fully expect Nadal to win, but I think Soderling could bash his was to an "interesting" set.

Nadal needs to step it up and start dishing out some bagels.

He is way behind his 2008 pace and stands almost no chance of threatening Borg's dominance.

    Soderling will win 3 games total. It'll be 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 Nadal.

Soderling seems to be in good form but he'll get obliterated by Rafa.

Nadal fairly easily in 3. One set might go to 6-4 IF Soderling serves well.

Soderling will be after revenge, sure.
But I for one don't think he'll gain anything on that. His psyche isn't strong enough.

Too close in my opinion.. Some expected Hewitt to give a little challenge to Nadal earlier today and look at what happened. (I couldn't watch the match because of school :()

I say Nadal in 3 sets.

  18. I don't think it will be a total bashing like the last time they played, but Nadal will still win pretty comfortably.

Soderling does not have the firepower to threaten Nadal on clay, although he has a great hardcourt game.

In addition, Soderling's serve is not penetrating enough on clay, especially against Nadal.

    I predict 6-3 6-2 6-3

Nadal escapes a big grind with Ferrer. Soderling will be a lot easier. Nadal in a blowout. Some bagels or breadsticks could be there. :D

Yeah this a great draw for Nadal Ferrer always plays him tough and its a grind. Soderling on the other hand is a UE machine as someone as mentioned as his a horrible mover.

There's still some animosity between these two, Nadal let him have it in one of the earlier clay tournies this year. Nadal's going to be motivated. 3 sets. Soderling wins 6 games max.

a gift from the gods and as nadal fans we should accept it very very very gratefully. :) He will also be fully charged at that point for the wimbledon campaign. I think that new forehand is going to be devastating this year on grass. I can't wait to see that at queens and especially at wimbledon.

btw I think you are from the UK, do you go to wimbledon? You will appreciate this, I saw sampras/bastl 02, wimbledon live. :)

Maybe probably only to see the outside courts then I'll probably cheer on my favourite player outside the top 100 Baghdatis.

Nadal's draw got a lot better with Ferrer losing...

Soderling stands no chance, and unless Federer smokes Djokovic or Djokovic smokes Federer, Nadal probably has a good shot at winning the FO without dropping a set again.

Nadal in straight sets. Even when Soderling is swinging for the fences and hitting winners he's too weak between the ears to win the big points against a great player like Nadal.

I have a question: why do the people that always create these threads always says the same? Oh I think "insert Nadal's rival here" will do good against Rafa before losing, the same as in the Hewitt-Nadal thread. Be realistic people, he'll not do good, he'll get owned in 3 sets by Nadal, easily.

Lol I wrote Lewitt! Really it was a honest question, everybody knows what the most likely result is (Nadal owning his opponent) so why does everybody start these threads with the same template? I honestly want to know.

What's your point? You think Soderling is a tougher matchup on clay? The guy makes way too many errors. Rome is a very similar surface to RG and Nadal won 6-1 6-0.

I hope Rafa pulverize him to dust like he did at Monte Carlo.

Söderling is my least favorite Swedish player, closely followed by Björkman.

In theory, Soderling should pose Nadal problems, as he has a big serve and a massive forehand, backed up by solid movement and a steady backhand.

In practice, Soderling is a head case ... a "should have been" kind of talent.

Their head to head record proves the point. Nadal in straights, possibly 4 sets if Soderling throws in everything to win a set.

Not a good matchup on a slow court. Nadal has no problems with anyones serve on Chatrier stadium. All that extra room really helps. I also think that not all of the courts at RG play the same. I think Court 1 and most of the outside courts play faster than Chatrier. And Nadal is very good at avoiding big forehands by going to their backhand until it is necessary to pull the trigger down the line. Ferrer is quicker and wins a lot of points not by his serve. Nadal neutralizes that shot anyways so you have to play it out. That makes him a harder matchup for Nadal on a slow court if he is on his game. But really Davydenko/Verdasco will be Nadal's first tough test.

Soderling is going to push everything on Nadal's BH and he's gonna use drop shots, lots of it.

If he wins a single set that's good enough.

The equation is actually simpler than that, I think. Soderling doesn't have Gulbis-level oppressive firepower (although, to be honest, just about no one on tour does), yet he depends on his heavy serve/forehand combo to win against most players. And he's not shown the consistent play that Verdasco or Gonzalez possess.

So yes, Davy and Fernando will be Nadal's real first test. ;)

Soderling will be spanked. The guy is a jerk so looking forward to it. The winner of Verdasco vs Davydenko will definitely be Nadal's first real test.

I wasn't paying attention. How did Soderling get into the 4th round? I thought Nadal was gonna face a string of 'uber tough clay courters a la Ferrer and Hewitt'?

Nadal in straights man. Easy. Maybe even a breadstick and a bagel to go with it.

I haven;t seen Soderlings recent matches but i saw Hewitt yesterday. I dont think anyone will take a set of Nadal. Certainly not this chap.

Hewitt played many points very well, thrrew everything at Rafa, some points "should have been his", but Rafa still managed to win them. That's become quite a norm now!

You know in the first couple of sets, Hewitt worked hard to put Rafa a few feet behind the baseline, but did not capitalize by coming to the net and taking advantage of some the weak returns...easier said than done I guess...but still just my observation....The third set he looked like he had given up on the match altogether...

I think this will be an interesting match. With all likelihood Nadal will win (actually this is true against ANYONE at this point). But Soderling must've gained some amount of confidence beating Ferrer so he really has nothing to lose and has done well so far. No shame at all losing to Rafa - if (probably when) it happens. A few tight games (even in the most recent beat-down there were very tight games) can go his way in which case he might win one set if he focuses. Scores might look lopsided but I don't think it will be a "quick" match.
