The Rome final between Nadal and Gonzalez should be a great match!

Considering Nadal's record win streak on clay, you undoubtably have to pick him as the favorite; however, Gonzalez owns a 3-1 winning record over Nadal and has also beaten Nadal on clay. Plus the "new and improved" Gonzalez beat Nadal at this year AO.

Factoring in Gonzalez's easy win today against Fillipo in contrast to Nadal's tough 3 setter over Davydenko, there could be an upset in the making?

Nadal was 17 in their first 2 meetings so with Nadal being in his prime it´s 1-1. I think it all depends on Nadal´s physique. If he recovers after the tough SF he should win because he is much better than Gonzalez on clay. If he is not at his best and Gonzalez plays well then Gonzalez has a chance.

gonzo will have to use not only his poweful forehand to win this. my guess is nadal is in straights.

Should be interesting considering Nadal is coming off a long match.I still say Nadal in 2 sets.Gonzalez needs to play a clean match.

Here's my call on it. It depends on who shows up from both players. If Nadal starts hitting shots that land in the service line, giving Feña time to set up, and Feña shows up hot, his going to be watching winners go by him all day. Most of the shots Davi hit today that Nadal was able to get, there's no way he's going to get them coming from Feña's forehand, period. Also Feña has to attack the net after his punishing forehand and force Nadal to pass him. If this is the case I say Feña in 3. On the other hand if Nadal plays good, and his strokes get good depth pinning Feña to the wall, it's going to be very very difficult for Feña to construct points. That way I'd say Nadal in straights. I'm all for Nadal, but I hope Feña wins tomorrow, I think the guy deserves a Masters win. Plus Nadal gets that pressure of the record off him and he goes into the FO with less stuff on his mind.

As usual great post, Zaragoza. Gonzo's first two victories over Nadal were a while back. Granted Gonzo's AO victory over Nadal was a real beatdown. Like you said, if Nadal recuperates physically, he should win.

I did notice Nadal's in the draw at Hamburg. I hope the Spaniard opts NOT to play there, as he looked pretty tired against Davydenko and he has no points to defend.

Gotta say one other thing. Your post said it depends on Nadal's "physique." As a Spanish-speaker myself, I can see that you're translating the word "fisico," right? Well, in English the word "physique" basically means "build" as in physical build, so it sounded kind of funny. I do the same thing in Spanish. I think (physical) "conditioning" would be the equivalent of "fisico." It's all good, just made me snicker a bit.

Nadal just edged past Davy, maybe getting fatigued. I picked Gonzo in straights just because. Gonzalez is hitting form again....Nads better watch out. I want to see Gonzo at Wimbledon, I think his current approach matches up better on grass than clay.

the problem with rafa is that he always wins on clay and therefore he doesn't have much time to recover in between tournaments

playing doubles is crazy but obviously he does it to improve his Serve and Volley game... he is making a huge effort..

i wouldnt be surprised if he would lose against feña tomorrow..

nadal has made a living this (mostly clay) year taking down guys who beat him last year on hard courts-berdych, federer, djokavic, youzhny, j.c. ferrero and payback's been a b$%#$-6-0 first set against berdych, straight-setted fed, 2 and 2 against youzhny, 1 and 1 against the mosquito and 2 and 3 against the joker. nadal hates to lose and fena's next.

unless he is uncharacteristically tired, expect gonzo to be the next object of nadal's revenge.

Gonzalez has a winning record against Nadal, beat him in 3 at the Masters. I picked Gonzo in 3.

Nadal is at his best when he plays offensive tennis. Even Federer can't beat him on offensive mode, but sometimes I see him going for defensive mode and simply just put the ball in play when he loses his confidence. If he plays defensive mode against Gonzo, he's gonna have a hard time just like the match with Davydenko.

If Gonzo wins, you gotta give half the victory to Davydenko.

Davy is always getting sloppy seconds. LOL. He lost a five-setter in the semis of the FO to a guy that turned out to be juicing. Tough luck for this dude.

I cant believe anyone thinks Gonzalez will win. Yeah Nadal did barely beat Davydenko, but Davydeno style wise is a much tougher opponent for Nadal on clay then Gonzalez, and Davydenko still couldnt beat Nadal, so how will Gonzalez do it. Plus Gonzalez has never won a Masters event, in the 2005 Madrid quarters vs Ljubicic he played a perfect match with no unforced errors almost and still lost too.

Gonzo looks like a man who believes if he gets into a long rallie situation with nadal, he does not believe he can win those points. that is why he is going for winners too soon and missing.

Rafa score the first knock out of the match on set point. you know what, that slice backhand of Gonzo is not doing anything to rafa, it is like batting practice for rafa.

This is an unforced error fest by Gonzalez. Nadal looks a bit tired but Gonzalez is not tactically clever to take advantage of that and his backhand also is not helping him at all.

Is this a best of 3 btw?

For all you boys who say, Federer should use Slice more against nadal, this is why Fed doesn't use more slice, it gets gobbled up by rafa.

Gonzalez is playing like ****. Spreading the balls all over the place, making errors left and right. Ridiculous. It's a poor final. The match against Davy was way better. Nadal doesn't even need to play in 2nd gear.

LOL, it's not Nadal's capri's I'm referring to. He's always going to be wearing something that creeps up his crack. It's just his clothing preference.

Hint: Look at the ball girls! Looks like they took good-looking women off a volleyball court and put them on a tennis court.
