I don't know if quaking in their boots, nadal is the best clay court player ever and of course if he is 100% is almost impossible to beat him in clay but this nadal is only as good as a 150 ranked player, I doubt he would be able to beat ruffin, chardy or berloq, and he is lucky monaco lost. If he is 100% even 80% this is a walk in the park, playing like today it would be really difficult for him to beat even a top 20 player would say even a 100 player.

Nadal seems to be taking less time between points.

OMG why this board is filled with ******* *******s and everytard there is, I enjoy watching most tennis players play, playing like this he would be lucky win the tournament, if he ups his game he will win like nothing is an atp 250... If this was madrid or montecarlo he wouldnt get to the semifinal. Try to be a little objective, it doesn't mean he is a bad player, he is just not psychically and technically fit 100%

He/She is not being a *******. The truth is I honestly think you're wrong. He would beat all those players you mentioned on clay.

Have you seen them play, they are way more experienced thn del bonis, they would feast on nadal's knees. They would move him so much he wouldnt be able to walk the next day.

He looks skinnier because of no match practice, sunning it up around the world and resting his knees. Not because of a silent ban...

Anyone who thought Nadal was going to be "80 or 90%" after 7 months off is going to be sadly mistaken.

I would agree Rafa is at about 60% right now..and on his way to a comfortable two set victory. By the time he wins this tourney he will be better, and if he's healthy enough to complete the Latin Swing he will be close to his top level at least in terms of shotmaking. We will see when he faces a top 10 opponent where his game is really at.

He's running, sliding, hitting crazy passing shots, attacking FH and BH when it's there...for a realistic Rafa fan, a doubles and singles victory in straight sets each is a great start

Oh please! Ruffin and Berlocq are terrible, and would get trounced by Nadal on clay. The only way they would win is if he couldn't walk BEFORE the match, not after. The only one who could potentially trouble him is Chardy and I still think Nadal would beat him.

Delbonis has spent the last set and a half looking afraid to win. Just about anyone within the top 30 would be double bagelling Nads right now. Which is clearly why he is here.

Typically, the Nards are jumping the gun on his performance. The real test is how his knees respond the next day. And the next day. And the next day.

So we'll see by the weekend. Just as we'll know within a month if his footspeed has been permanently affected.

He's definitely getting better mid match. Found the FH about mid way through the first set, although it's very on and off. Can make a terrible error with it 1 minute and hit a pretty good shot the next. BH has been the shot that keeps pretty much every ball in the court, (i.e just consistent, not flashy) and serve looks ok. He tried a few more dropshots in this match than he usually does IIRC.

I meant terrible relative to Nadal. I thought that was obvious. Nadal would smash those 2.

Nobody outside the top 30 would beat Nadal the way he played today.

His movement looked a bit wary and definitely has a way to go, before it's where it used to be.

Nadal did leak some errors with the forehand, in trying to establish his range. But he also had a lot of great shots and played some well constructed points. He served great when he 'needed to'. His backhand was no worse than usual and did actually hit through it, more than usual.

In conclusion a very solid effort. Especially if you consider he hasn't played a singles match in 7 months. How his knees hold up and how he gets his movement up to speed again (if he's able to), is what's going to be interesting to see the coming weeks.

Please go back to tennis.com and troll their boards(like always)with your Lancetard bs. I can't even point and laugh at you because even you're too pathetic to make fun of.

As for the match, I think Nadal played ok. Nothing great or spectacular. Anybody know who he plays next?

It was a solid effort by Nadal, but let's not forget that John Isner, ranked 39, pushed Rafa to 5 sets at RG in 2011; an achievement that Nadal's other rivals like Federer, Djokovic, and Murray have not been able to emulate. Given Nadal's hiatus from the tour, I think it is safe to say that Big John could have taken down Rafa today.

Yeah, I actually left out the most important part for Nadal. His movement was obviously subpar. It should come around, but it's hard to say if it will be as good as it was pre layoff. You can't ask for more after a 7 month layoff, but it will have to get better.

I actually thought nadal looked pretty good tonight. he is certainly as far a long in his recovery as i thought he would be and looks like he will be back to himself sooner rather than later. the second set in particular was getting better and better. he wins this tourney without a problem and its nice to have him back.

    Blog updated below! :)

His movement and his accuracy are both needing work. I though he was slow out to his left, too. Since Nadal's entire game revolves around how well he moves, he has to drastically improve it if he wants to win titles and beat the top guys again. Otherwise, it's lights out.

I think he played better then what I was expecting. He looked heavy footed and his shots were off and have lost power, but considering the circumstances he was still able to hit some nice winners. Obviously it will take time to get back to top form, but it's good to see him back on court regardless.

I agree. I am watching the match again right now and he is playing worse than I first thought. Everything is dropping short, he's slow, he defensive, he's not moving side to side very well, and he looks terrified to be out there. Not a very promising start at all.

Many of his shots were dropping so short they didn't leave the service box.

Like I said in a previous post though we have to give it time, I didn't expect him to come out hitting crazy winners and chasing down every ball and moving flawlessly. He looked pretty tentative in his shotmaking and movements, but that is to be expected after coming back from a 7 month injury.

We'll have to see as the tournament progresses, but I'm keeping my expectations low and my optimism at realistic levels.
