While I was watching Nadal pratice on center court Tuesday night, I noticed that only only one side of his shoes had the air pockets.

    Does anyone know why?

Custom shoes, maybe he doesn't like the stock version...

Or could he be giving a new model a test run?
(Also if you are in Cincinnati the Cincinnati Enquier's Sports Section has a picture of Nadal Wearing these shoes)

    Odd Shoes

His shoes were the same way at Wimbledon. Check Getty Images
Thats really odd. Maybe having the air pockets on only one side gives him a bit more of a stiff feel that he likes better than a really soft cushioned one.

I'm sure they are custom for him as they are for Fed. It would have to do with how physical he is and how hard he is on shoes given his style of play. I would think it keeps the air pockets from popping as I have even had them pop on me before.

    Because of Roland Garros

I was curious about this after I replied so I did some research. I looked up his shoes from Roland Garros and I noticed his tread pattern was different and it was wrapped up around the side of the heel because of the way he moves. I think it's probably that way on hard courts too. The tread or some rubber has been wrapped up around the side of the heel so that he doesn't separate the sole from the shoe when he draggs his shoes across the ground when he reaches for shots.

They must be custom because they look really cushioned. Then the regular retail version.

All his shoes are custom made. The tread runs higher, the tounges are longer and the area around the ankle(sorry, no technical vocab!)is higher...along with all the lettering
