Nagal to play Olympics despite injury

Sumit Nagal, India's only singles participant in the tennis event of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, has been handed a fairly difficult draw.

Nagal, who is making his debut at the Games, has had a mediocre 2021 season so far; the Indian has won 18 matches against 17 losses. It should also be noted that Nagal is currently dealing with an small injury, which could have implications if he goes deep in the draw.

Nagal is a 1R slight underdog.

But there are still good chances to face Medvedev in 2R. Hope he'll advance.

He should've backed up the sneaky headline with more stuff that could've been interpreted as Nadal info. Missed opportunity.
The horse is already dead bro, stop beating it
@sureshs is very jealous that the original SoBad thread is still universally accepted as the gold standard in April Fools-style thread titles. The thread was perfectly timed because Nagal played and lost R16 at the Rome’16 Challenger 2 on 4 May. This result was the week before Italian Open so it would have been shocking news that Nadal had decided during Madrid to skip Rome.

The biggest achievement of his career by far was to take a set from compromised federer at USO, gentleman.
Its really a shame that a country with population more than entire EU combined, can't even produce one nice player.

Well, despite the poor execution, he can take comfort in the fact that a handful of people viewed this thread without having been there for the gold standard. I don't know much about this mythical Sureshs character, but I do remember taking note of his tendency to predict great things for young players following impressive wins.

@sureshs is hurt by your harsh proclamation. He claims to be a world cla.s.s tennis talent. While he pliés for the USA these days he was born and raised on the Indian subcontinent.

Sureshs’ greatest talent in the prediction category is his uncanny success at jinxing The Nadal with premature celebratory statements/threads at the slams. This started with his magnum opus Cincinnati - The Real Slam thread that singlehandedly promoted the M1K to slam status here at TTW. Posted before the 2009 SFs that featured the top 4 players, he predicted in his OP that he had a feeling that “the guy with the elegant strokes” would not win. The weekend was a dud with all three matches won in straight sets (fedr over Murray, ND; Nadal out to ND in the SF). The thread was the best part of the weekend and still has legs every August.

The jinxing prowess means that he at least has some power in him. Sureshs, if you're reading this, what do you think about that Indian-American boy who just won Junior Wimbledon? Will he continue to represent America or will he chase the easy money in India?

What is “jinxing”??

That boy committed to Princeton already, didn’t he? Kind of reminds me another Asian American player Claire Liu who won Wimby Jr. a few yrs ago. Now struggling in WTA pro circle.

Oh, I didn't see that he committed. Well, he can still represent Indian. I wouldn't blame him. He probably should. But maybe he just wants to be a rocket scientist.

Samir Bannerji? He will play for the US.

India had a few foreign players of Indian origin wanting to play DC or BJC for them, but they did not allow them. So I don't think he will be welcome on any Indian squad.

Really? Hmm. Even if he becomes a big time prospect? What would the perception of him be in India if he chose to represent the country in regular, non team events? Would they not treat him like a national star? Seems like every other country would have no problem with it. Is India a little different in that regard? Do they prefer their players to be homegrown?

Yes. There were objections raised by local politicians about this. I believe also that the statutes governing this do not allow anyone other than a citizen of India to play for the country.

But if he became a citizen, would they accept and celebrate him then?
