The fan treatment of 18 year old Sharapova was pathetic at the Nasdaq 100. For fans to boo and yell obscenities at her for simply taking a bathroom break, at the changeover was ridiculous. Maria has rarely ever given anything less than 100% on the court, and been great for the sport of tennis. There are millions of young girls practicing to be the next Shararpova. Of course, as she gets older, she'll learn that the stadium is simply an arena to do battle, and not to care about what the morons in the stands think about her. I hope the fans got there money's worth today watching Maria play dispirited. Its pretty obvious why American tennis is in the toilet. Hopefully, Maria skips the Nasdaq 100 for years too come, and plays where the fans are more polite. And may the State of Florida have a record hurricane season!

one very rich, attractive young lady having to endure the jeers of a few hundred fans for an evening . . .

    versus

16 million or so people having to endure the threat of loss of life and/or person belongings for several months, due to a series of natural disasters.

hmmm . . . guess it doesn't pay to get on your bad side, eh? either you are sharapova's number one fan . . . or the most deluded, irrational crackpot on this board.

    mr. sharapov, come on down!

That's the problem. It wasn't at a changeover, and it wasn't on her serve. She did it specifically to shift momentum.

Take it easy, driger. Sharapova already cannot care less about the crowd. She get so zoned in on the match, that even if the stands come crashing down or if aliens land on court and kidnap her opponent she would still just get ready to play the next point. This kind of self-hypnosis, in my view, explains why she was so cold-hearted towards Golovin at first.

I have never been able to watch her play. She is the most annoying self-centered b*^% I have seen in a long time. People will treat atheletes how they are perceived to them. So, if they believe she is a jerk, because she acts like one, then she will be treated like one. I don't remember Sampras, Graff, and even someone like Hingis in their younger days act so rotten. When I say rotten, not J Mac rotten, but just acting herself. J Mac was not annoying.
People don't like her because of her, not her tennis and her abilities. She obviously has skills, maybe her dad should teach her to be more humble and respectful towards other players. Maybe R Fed could give her a few tips.

good lesson for Sharapova on all counts.
I don't see any progress in her.
    bad coaching.

exagerating the use of reverse FH on each blimey shot ... losing power there ...

Obvious why american tennis is in the toilet!?!?

Imagine if they were at Roland Garros, or the Davis Cup somewhere! It would have been 10 times worse. The crowd booed Sharapova and cheered for Golovin. Dont see anything wrong with that. Plus, as the commentators were saying, many of the fans dont like Sharapova due to her grunts.

And if Maria had closed the match out at 5-1, none of it would of happened. Hopefully, she learns from it.

You'd better become a Federer fan, its less stressful.

europeans give a damn about "unwritten rules" because they know better. i don't like Sharapova but when I compare her to Roddick....i don't need to say any more. and what's the crowd's response to Roddick? nothing. what's the comentators' response to Roddick's bad behavour? uhm, nothing.
pathetic. am I wrong? if people don't like somebody they become so inventive. they will always find something. not very mature

Sharapova's loss today had NOTHING to do with the fans. She was simply outplayed by a better opponent today. End of story.

Golovin's grunts? All you can hear was a slight whisper vs. Sharapova's shrieking at the top of her lungs...idiot

I hope she does skip it next year as it's a mandatory tourney, which means she gets penalized with a loss of points, and she gets a fine. Thus that move will drop her *** lower in the rankings. I'm all for it.

and how many points did davenport get penalized? she'd survive it. sometimes theres just principle involved. let em use serena to sell their tournament.

It's working ok for Nadal, ain't it? Most of the top players use it too, though I can't recall Blake ever hitting it. Federer does it, but not nearly as often as others.

I have a feeling, with clay court season on, being Fed's fan may become a lot more stressful than before, so this is a bad time to join a bandwagon. I say, wait till Wimby, then join.
