For those of you with TTC, we experienced something virtually unprecedented on Saturday 3/27 - approximately 12 straight hours of coverage! You'd run an errand and come back, it'd be there. Walk your dog, it'd be there ... you get the picture. Plus, several of the matches were excellent, from Spadea's great effort V. Safin to Monaco running out of his shoes against what looked to me like a Guga going through the motions. Oh yeah, and Federer on the brink. I'm not even referring to the commentators: so what? The achievement was just having the good sense to fix a camera in one spot and show a lot of tennis. Great! I've never been much of an ESPN tennis fan, and this trend continues. What really hurts about their incredibly lame but tidy 2 hours of coverage is that it caused TTC to not be able to show any coverage on Sunday, because esspin blacks out the whole day for itself. And what'd we get? Serena with another winning, dominant, and error-laden performance that pulled in at three sets and just about 1 hour 56 minutes, and then off to racing or some other nonsense. This isn't tennis coverage - this is two hours of filler to get something on after something else and before yet something else. All I can say is, let's look forward to the European clay court season. If tradition holds, esspin will continue to show no interest in broadcasting any part of these events. That means that TTC can go whole-hog and show as much as it likes. But, I hope I didn't just jinx anything ... stay tuned.
