For those of you with TTC, we experienced something virtually unprecedented on Saturday 3/27 - approximately 12 straight hours of coverage! You'd run an errand and come back, it'd be there. Walk your dog, it'd be there ... you get the picture. Plus, several of the matches were excellent, from Spadea's great effort V. Safin to Monaco running out of his shoes against what looked to me like a Guga going through the motions. Oh yeah, and Federer on the brink. I'm not even referring to the commentators: so what? The achievement was just having the good sense to fix a camera in one spot and show a lot of tennis. Great!

I've never been much of an ESPN tennis fan, and this trend continues. What really hurts about their incredibly lame but tidy 2 hours of coverage is that it caused TTC to not be able to show any coverage on Sunday, because esspin blacks out the whole day for itself. And what'd we get? Serena with another winning, dominant, and error-laden performance that pulled in at three sets and just about 1 hour 56 minutes, and then off to racing or some other nonsense. This isn't tennis coverage - this is two hours of filler to get something on after something else and before yet something else.

All I can say is, let's look forward to the European clay court season. If tradition holds, esspin will continue to show no interest in broadcasting any part of these events. That means that TTC can go whole-hog and show as much as it likes. But, I hope I didn't just jinx anything ... stay tuned.

Mostly agree although I got to miss a few things from the ESPN broadcasts. Shotspot is one of them. Also, I believe ESPN is showing more replays and have more cameras on the court. TTC had one cool angle though -- the minicam by the net is a great shot and gives you an idea of the speed of those guys when going for the volley shot.

Check out the TTC website and look for the forum. Steve Bellamy, the president of the network is very active there. You can be sure that he will listen if you guys have comments.

I agree. TTC was fabulous and ESPN was what I would expect-- show an American "star" even if tape delay. From news reports, there was great tennis on Sunday. Federer lost to Nadal, Hewitt loses, Capriati loses. ESPN shows a tape of Serena. For tennis fans it would be better if ESPN didn't carry tennis at all rather than pre-empting TTC from coverage. (I know, I know not everybody gets TTC).

While by now this should be completely predictable, I still cannot believe your reports that ESPN would again show yesterday's Serena match during a rain delay today. Don't get me wrong, I believe you, I just can't believe how moronic esspin is. Insane ...

Yeah, I wasn't surprised. But they have 4 hours of coverage this afternoon. Wonder what they will do if it doen't stop raining and they finish re-running the Serena match. They have nothing else in the can.

I hope it keeps raining just so we can see what they do. *lol* They probably will go to another sport, like card shuffling or something. But I turned on my VCR just in case they have to air something that occurred yesterday. hehehe

Like one of the ATP upsets!

And yes, TTC is covering Monte Carlo, Roma and Hamburg. *woohoo*

If ESPN thought they could get away with it, they would just loop the Serena match over and over.

"Err sorry folks... were still in a rain delay, so were going to show you the Serena match one more time."

Well, at least they are showing a new match -- even if it is of an out-of-condition Jennifer who couldn't run down anything. Glad I have that one on tape.

They only had Cliff and Mary Jo in the booth, so probably felt they couldn't with an ATP match.

I e-mailed ESPN and asked them when they are going to show Nadal. They keep talking about him, and Mal Washington wrote in his article this week that we will keep hearing the name "Rafael Nadal" this year. And it's true -- we'll keep hearing his name, but we won't actually see him. I think that's what he actually meant.

It's because of ESPN that I have flown around the world going to tourneys, though. If we didn't have crappy coverage, I likely would have stayed at home a lot more.

    ESPN and TTC

Steve Bellamy the head of Tennis Channel has said that some of the folks at ESPN view Tennis Channel more of a threat to ESPN rather than a complementary product for tennis fans.

In other words, he has said it is hard for his channel to show stuff from outside courts or other coverage because of ESPN's producers.

I don't necessarily think this is true. While it is obvious most tennis fans hate ESPN, even if ESPN just covered their 2 "marquee" matches of the day and tennis channel covered everything else, most tennis fans would probably watch a little of both.. or a lot of both!

Unfortunately, this is what happens when the guys in the suits take over.

Funny, it wasn't too long ago that ESPN was just a start-up network that showed Badminton of all things much of the week.

hey i happen to love badmitton..it's even faster than tennis.....ESPN is trying to give the american public what they think it wants...which are roddick, the williamses, and agassi. if you dont know much about T and you are from the US, those may be the only players that are familar to you, so that is what they give you. so now after the rain delay, showing serena yesterday, the replay of serena in the rain delay, and now guess who we get when live play is resumed???? bah..hrumpf..ack. espn tennis really isnt for tennis fans..think the reg networks do a much better job. my opinion is that espn throughs as little money as possible into tennis because it really doesnt bring in the listenership...it might be right there w. espn poker. It may be true that TTC is not able to show outside courts because of ESPN. I am sure that they are paying ESPN royalties for the cameras, equipment, video feeds etc...
