This question is a long shot here but thought I'd ask anyway...

I'm looking for a female coach who plays left handed in Hong Kong. Anyone know of one? Reason is I've been challenged to play a singles match against a female player, lefty, who claims she can whip me. She's about 45 - 50 years old, a bit chubby, hits a solid ball but nothing overwhelming. Serve medium speed but goes in on high % basis, volleys OK.

Me, male, 68 years old, probably a 3.5, still play club tournaments, but getting more difficult. Good solid first serve, OK forehand and consistent slice backhand. OK volleying and overhead.

So, looking for a female coach who can do some drills with me, especially lefty serve for me to practice return of serve, which is my weak point.

Hmmm I think you're going to be stuck in quite a pickle my friend! Check up some websites or try some clubs (does the kcc have a tennis program?).

You may also want to try widen your search to even male left instructors.

kevoT, thanks for your suggestion. I had already asked the HK Tennis Assn whether they had or know of lefty female coach. They have two female coaches, but both right handed. I play at HK Jockey Club, and there is one male coach who plays lefty (Serbian who is friend of Novak Djokovic, as matter of fact). I hadn't asked the KCC or some of the other clubs directly, but will do so.

I specifically want to play against a lefty female, so that I can assess the pace and spin of their ball, their speed around the court, ability to handle high balls and lobs, quickness at net, etc. All this is different than playing against a guy.

I saw the youtube video of Thomas Muster (before his comeback) playing an exo against Austria's (still active WTA) no. 1 female, Sybille Bammer, and he basically toyed with her. Interesting video here:

cloned_spud, thanks. I sent them an email to ask if they know or can arrange for a decent lefty female player.

So much for this Peak Performance Tennis coaching group. After two weeks, they haven't even acknowledged or replied to my email asking about their coaching staff and what's available.

Peak Performance finally replied to my email, but offered only a guy who could practice with me. Still looking for a female tennis coach or good player who plays lefty in Hong Kong.

honestly i don't think you're likely to find one. lefties are about 10% of the population to start with and you're cutting your chances in half by wanting a female coach.

while your reasons for wanting specifically a female coach is understandable i feel like you would be better served playing anyone that is a lefty at or above your level to get used to the spins. this is because even you do get a female coach her playing style and amount of spin might vary greatly from your opponent.

reason i replied to this post is cause i'm in HK right now looking for 3.0s to hit with and stumbled across this so sorry for butting in.

also if you don't mind me asking, why are you going to such lengths to prepare for this match? if it's suppose to be a friendly match then this is going a bit overboard, if you really hate this person then it is more understandable, or if you are just an extraordinary competitive person. just asking this out of curiosity.

First thing that went through my mind was Bobby Riggs vs Billie Jean King :)
    OP is looking for vengence!

Sidetracking a bit here, what's the tennis scene like in HK for coaches? I was born and raised there and always wondered what it would be like to go back and maybe coach. My Cantonese needs a lot of work....

    Best of luck!

My friends in HK (and every other city in the Asia Pac!) think the coaches suck - too rigid and only teach one way to play. The coaches in HK complain how tough it is to make a living - cost of living is outrageously high so they have to charge a lot - those who don't make progress get grump and quit. Constantly hustling to find clients.

Grew up in HK, now live in Billings? Wow!

The average "recreational" coach in HK still endorses the "old school" style as reflected by their own style of play. They can't teach better because they themselves don't know better. To be taught a modern game you either have to hire a younger coach (hopefully a rising prospect in hk) or someone who's come back from overseas.

Interesting points. I'll pass that advice on to my friends who live in the Asia Pac.

and of course, EVERY lefty female hits the same, runs the same, has the same weaknesses, the same strengths, and last but not least, prefers NOT to hit with old farts who take themselves too seriously.
