2017: Medvedev and Rublev are the standout names and two of the games elite nowadays. Khach is right behind them too. Coric and Shapo have been pretty highly ranked and have made it deep in slams (Coric also won a 1000), but find themselves in a bit of a limbo currently. Jared Donaldson was a bust. He made it as high as 48 in the world, ended up retiring at just 25 years of age, played his final match at 23. Chung made it as high as No. 19 and had a prolific win over Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, but at 27 has no ATP ranking anymore. He isn’t officially retired but he is unable to return due to persistent injury problems. Quinzi retired at just 25 years old. He never cracked the top 100.

2018: Tsitsipas, Fritz, Hurkacz self explanatory. De Minaur and Tiafoe two perennial top 15 guys who have been knocking on the door recently. Munar was a bust. He’s currently no.80 in the world and hasn’t risen higher than 51, 26 years old. Caruana continues the early retirement trend, hanging it up at just 23 years old. He never even made the top 300.

2019: Ruud and Sinner speak for themselves, part of the games elite. Umbert has dealt with injury problems but has slowly begun climbing the rankings again, he’s around the top 20 now. Kecmanovic and Davidovich Fokina had a lot of potential but find themselves stuck in top 25-50 limbo. Continuing the trend of early retirement, Ymer retired earlier this year at 25 years old after missing 3 doping tests and lying about why he missed them. He made it as high as No.50.

2021: Alcaraz and Rune are both now elite-level and are the best young players in the world. Korda, Musetti, and Baez are working their way up the rankings and have made steady progress. Cerundolo is behind them still grinding at the back end of the top 100. Nakashima had been making steady progress but saw a major loss of form in 2023 with many first round exists. Despite demolishing Rune 6-0 6-2 in Shanghai, he’s fallen outside the top 150. While it’s too early to call, Gaston is close to busting. He’s made zero considerable progress and is one of the most disliked players on tour currently.

2022: Too early to tell for any of these names. The only one that maybe isn’t looking like he’s gonna make it is Passaro, he’s outside the top 200 and 22. Never cracked T100. Nakashima won this year.

Whilst 2017 is an outlier, the Champs from 2018, 19, and 21 have all made it and become part of the games elite, which is why despite a terrible season I still hold out hope for Nakashima to turn it around, he has the game.

Interesting to note that 4 players on this list have retired from professional tennis, all within the 22-25 age bracket. The two Italian boys as sad as it is to say, probably were never gonna make it. Just fill-in wild cards. Donaldson was a major bust and had a terrible fall off, worse than Ryan Harrison did back in the day. Ymer wasn’t that bad but more or less made his bed with the recent allegations.
