They got started off with a bang.

PIT got up to a quik lead and eased off the gas.

Anyone see the first 3 periods of the st.Louis game? Only saw the OT periods and Stl dominated. Was it the same in the first 3?

+1! Some of the pundits said they would give them a run because they'd won games in PIT and could score with them. Thought they were just talking up the series and the Flyers would go meekly in 5. But they are getting the scoring - PIT's D is terrible - and Bryz is making some key stops.

VAN looks tight - and doesn't have any offense.

Anyone else not happy with the officiating? I hate the way the refs swallow their whistles and refuse to call penalties late in tight games.

Looking fwd to the SJ - STL and CHI - PHX game 2's tonight.

Still can't believe Phoenix is in the playoffs. Is Crosby finally well enough to play? If so go Penguins!!!! Would be cool to see Boston repeat (when was the last time the Stanley Cup had a repeat champion?)

'Hawks v. 'Yotes - Both games Blackhawks empty the net and score in the final minute to tie. Last night, they did it with only 5 seconds left and they close the deal in OT. Kane and Seabrook have been the balls in the critical moments.

3-0 Flyers after posting another Snowman (8 goals). PIT should be ashamed. Neal should be suspended - launched himself at a guy's head who was 1 player removed from playing the puck - and neither ref saw it - worse than the Rowe hit on the Bruin in last yr's Final. Asham - goon who should be out of hockey - crosscheck to the throat - sad. Letang attacking a Fin who never fights - lame. Adams attacking Hartnell from behind then pulling his hair (what is he, a 14 yr old girl?) - another suspension.

Sorry, penalties are part of the game - teams that can't avoid bad penalties, kill penalties, and score on their power play chances should be arranging golf tee times. The other problem is it makes the league look like they're favoring the big market teams - they never completely stop calling things - and it always looks like the big market teams get the calls.

Unless it's a blatant call then the refs have to call it. Other than that stick the whistles in the pockets and let's go. I've watched almost every game and haven't found that they are missing calls late in games. They might miss a couple because they're human.

as much as I like tennis, hockey is the best sports to watch. these players are just the best athletes, and crazy too. the speed of the game is is unmatched. And when they go into OT so the next goal wins - there's nothing better.

I completely disagree with "stick the whistles in the pockets and let's go" and so called "let the players decide" thinking. Whether it's hockey, basketball, football - there are rules. If the refs do not call the penalties they are cheating the team that is playing by the rules.

The only thing i do not get with hockey players is those illegal hits meant to hurt a player. i mean haven't they learnt anything - you can end someone's career or life. I mean it's one thing to deliver a clean and hard hit, but the stuff with flying sticks to the head, elbows to the face - that's just stupid. they should be suspending such players for the entire playoffs on first such offense

After today's game, well...I like watching fights of course, but at this point it seems like the Penguins are just starting fights because they're pissed that they can't win. Not to mention the amount of cheap shots and whatnot tonight. It was honestly a disgrace, and nobody wants to see crap like that. That's not sport, that's just bull****.

NHL is definitely a quality viewing experience. Baffling to me how few of us in the US get into it.

Players are talented and crazy like the previous guy said, but also the toughest athletes in sports. They play through just about any injury, take pucks to the head and skate off and hurl their bodies into each other at insane speeds.

    Oh, and BTW, go Sharks!

Like I said blatant calls then call them. But if it's a little hook or slash let it go. As for the elbows and cross-checks to the head no one likes that and of course that should be called. I think Neal and asham should both be suspended.

Crazy game yesterday, it did get a bit out of hand though.

I fancy the Bruins again, I picked them last time and I have a similar feeling again this time. I don't think there are too many outstanding teams at the moment, Rangers and Panthers winning their divisions, same for St Louis and Phoenix.

So yeah, i'll say the Bruins or the clutch, never know when you're beaten Blackhawks for me.

Blackhawks fan here. But the Hawks are playing like crap. Do they think people will keel over just because they won a cup a couple of years ago? No Way!!!! Other teams are hungrier than the Hawks. And that's how they've been playing the whole year.

When they finally are in dire straits, they put it into gear and out-play the other team. But that's not always gonna work. Especially with teams like Nashville.

On another note, I've never been so much of a LA and PHI fan. I hate the Penguins and Canucks. Crosby may be talented, but he's a crybaby. PHI's looking good. They can play with finesse or with brawn. The Hawks cannot.

A lot of injuries. And they got old. Might be time to break it up, retire a few more jerseys, and rebuild.

Would it be insane if the Rangers, Bruins, Pens, Van all lost in the 1st round?

@AndyRoddickFan, sorry to disagree: when you punch someone in the face or check them and knock them down, after the whistle blows, it's roughing - go sit for 2. Some of the crews were letting that go. Today it seemed like they tightened things up - apparently Bettman and Shanny figured out they'd lost control.

I think they are going to go after Parise this year. Also, if Lidstrom retires, look for the wings to make a splash in the Suter sweepstakes.

2 second round losses + 1 first round loss = major changes in Hockeytown

I can see Datsyuk feeding Parise into a 45-goal season, and Suter wouldn't be a bad replacement for Liddy (if it's possible to replace a guy like him)

Hope the defending Champs win a comfortable one! Going to be fun, though.

Why wasn't Holtby starting all year? Guy's been playing well.

Huge Habs fan still suffering from this season:mad: looks like I'm gonna stick with the Rangers for the cup. Love to see a Rangers/Flyers conf final......that should seal it as I can't see anyone form the west beat NY nor Philly in a series.

A team without a crybaby and hyporcrite as a captain and a bunch of goons?

Just like Quick and the Kings. And Kopitar is probably the best player hardly anyone on the East Coast knows.

Rangers are going to win the Cup. As much as I'd like to see the Flyers come out of the East - NYR owned them in the regular season and will stifle the Flyers offense if they meet.

I'm an Islanders fan, hopefully you won't have to get used to missing every post-season aswell :)

I predicted one of the last 3 teams to win the cup will do it again this year, unfortunately every one of them lost in the first round. No idea where it will end up now, everyone has a chance more than ever I think.

Much stronger playoff beards, as a whole, for the L.A. Kings. Predictable outcomes.

Let this be a lesson to teams that play with razors during the playoffs.

Well done, great to see the Kings get their first cup.

As an Islanders fan, it's pretty worrying to see how good the teams around us are. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Rangers and now Devils are the others in our division. Looks like it won't be getting better anytime soon.

Now the playoff matchups are all set, I thought it was time to bump the old thread!

What a difference a year makes, the Flyers and Devils both missing the playoffs, with the Islanders making it :) now for Pittsburgh in the first round..

Any ducks, wild or blues fans here? Or people that watch those teams? How are their role players? Do they have the character to make a run? The pens obviously look stacked. Like either Boston or Washington to do well. Habs may be in trouble. IMO they aren't built for playoffs, too small and speed and skill, but what do I know. Also any input on west teams would be nice.

Yeah i'm in the same boat regaring the west. I stay up late here in the UK to watch the Islanders games as the time difference isn't too bad, the west doesn't work as well. I've seen the Wild a couple of times on tape delay, they didn't impress me all that much. I'll be interested to see the Ducks against the Wings, they were poor last year so it will be good to see what's changed.

I went to page 1 and thought I was in a time warp but then realized it was last year's games being discussed (Flyers???).

Go Isles! It was tough dropping to #8 on the last weekend but we're in. The playoffs often depend on which goalie gets hot and stays in the zone (anybody remember Billy Smith?). We've got a veteran between the pipes so I won't write them off plus we have history in the playoffs vs the Pens...down 0-3 to them in '75 and came back to win. That whole playoff run was incredible...beat the Rangers on a quick OT goal by J.P. Parise, then the Pens in the comeback and almost the same scenario vs the defending Cup-winning Flyers...down 0-3, tie it up but lose Game 7. That was the year the franchise was built on...it took 5 years to get it all but the magic started in '75!

I see the Wings winning in 7, the Ducks can be beat that Defense is leaky not enough speed on the blue line.
I see the Canucks once again taking down SJ, lets face it the Canucks are now bored of the regular season and know when to bring it.
The Kings winning in 5, too much size and clutch guys.
    Blackhawks in a sweep.
