My vote is for Cyril Suk. I met him at Delray Beach. This guy is pushing 40-years-old he had his son tagging along with him. He took a good five minutes to talk with me after a practice session.

I told him he had one of the classiest backhands I’d ever seen. He laughed and said a lot of guys have better. He told me about his racquet (Volkl C10) and gave me an impromptu lesson, showing me in slow motion his backhand swing and then letting me try to duplicate it.

Turns out he’s been on the tour for nearly 20 years!

After our talk he said, “Since you like my backhand so well I’ll give you some water.” He smiled and handed me an unopened bottled water, which was much needed.

Then the guy goes out and he and his partner are up to the doubles semis at Delray.

Super nice guy. I’m hoping he can stay on the tour past 40.

    Go Cyril!

Paul Goldstein was really nice when I chatted with him and took a picture with him at the Bronx Challenger a couple of years ago.

Indy, nice anecdote you got there, keep them coming!

I did a little research on Suk. He played a few doubles with Bederych and I thought that was an interesting combination. 30 years of difference, it's like a dad playing with his son, no?

Cyril is the brother of one-time top 5 WTA player Helena Sukova.

Their mother, Vera Sukova, reached #6 in the world in 1957.

Here are Helena, Cyril, and mom together...

    Great stuff! Thanks for sharing.

I love the photo of young Helena and Cyril practicing as kids and then the next photo of them holding up the championship trophy.

Cyril's son was out there with a racquet hitting against a wall, so maybe yet another generation will play on the tour.

I also got to see Tommy Haas interacting with some young fans trading lines back and forth with them from the movie “Napoleon Dynamite”.

Those kids left in awe of Haas.

If there’s one piece of advice I can give to my fellow Tennis Talkers it is to try to get to some of these pro tournaments during the time when matches aren’t going on and when the players are practicing.

It makes you appreciate just how much hard work a lot of these players put in when you see them out there, just like you and me, working on different parts of their games.

It also a great time to bring kids so they can see the work ethic behind the great shot. They’ll also have more of an opportunity to get to meet their favorite player under low-pressure situations. Most of these players don’t mind people watching them practice, in fact I think many of them enjoy getting to show off shots they probably wouldn’t or don’t have the opportunity to use in a match.

To further confirm how nice Alex Corretja is, go to his official site. He just LOVES his beautiful wife...they've been together since they were 15. And he writes about his friend Albert Costa.

ATP has pulled the English site. Here it is in Spanish...with pics

From 1st hand experience talking with and observing MANY pros over 10 years:

    Enqvist (probably the nicest)
    Mirnyi
    Haas
    Clement
    Santoro
    Grosjean
    Bjorkman
    Rafter

Not as nice as everyone thinks:

    Kuertan
    Edberg
    Nenman

Nice to see Cyril get some recognition.

The photo of Cyril and Helena holding the Wimby mixed doubles trophy aloft could have been the year that he gave me (a total stranger) and my then 6 year old daughter a pass into the player's box for Centre Court. When I thanked him years later, he remarked how it had been a lucky tournament for him.

Cyril is truly a legend. I think his son is Cyril IV.

    Nicest

Haas on Santa's 'NICE' list? I like him for his BH, bit something tells me Red Ayme would read this and LHAO.

Kuerten? Gustavo Kuerten? Big lanky Brazilian guy, funny hair, big smile? Not on the top part of the nice list?
We've seen some post-op surliness here and there. But really? I've met him more than once and I think the world of him.
The only person I have seen him (and his press secretary) not absolutely downright cool with is Dave 'the KOZ' Kozlowski. Merely civil.

    What about Federer?
On Open Access with uhm, Murphy Jensen, RF said that a saying he tries to live by is:
"It is nice to be important. But it is really important to be nice."

    Nice.

    Later,
    Slice.

Haas is um... well... look, I like him and I am personally quite fond of him, and he is usually very decent with me when I see him, but I know that there are plenty of unpleasant fan encounters with him floating around out there and I've seen him be a bit 'aloof' to say the least, with fans and such. I'd put him on the 'average' list.

Haas says the truth to reporters, and they can't take it.

James Blake's nice, but he can be too satsfied with his tennis game. He also can't accept that there were greater players than Federer.

Is this a joke? Look at the similarities, mate.

Anyway, I would include Pablo Arraya. I remember watching the most entertaining match (with better than average tennis being played) on USA a few years ago between him and Andre Agassi. Though recounting the particulars would seem a bit useless without actually watching the match, the fans were in love with Arraya after it was over.

    Don't leave out Kiefer.

He gives money back to the game in the forms of his fines. He does this in his own subtle way so as to not attract attention. While other pros make a big to do with their charities, Kiefer does it without anyone realizing that he's doing it.

I went through this thread surprised Paradorn wasn't mentioned until the 3rd page. I'll 2nd that.

No way on Haas. The fans that had positive experiences with him were very fortunate. Maybe in the last year or two he's mellowed a little - but in the years before his injuries and parents' accident he was pretty rude to all those around him on a consistent basis.

fabrice santoro. met him in sydney this yr and he signed every autograph. even when he was leaving the practice court, and ppl (like me!) came up to him, he still signed them...compared with gasquet, who was practically running away from us!
clijsters and henin hardenne are definite nice girls.
also maybe gimbelstob? i think he was getting sick of practising and I saw him having a hit with some young fans on the court. i bet they were just flattered.
