Is Nike ever going to bring back these awesome shoes? I am talking about the old johnny macs in the grey and green color scheme.

they did in 1994 and 2002. You missed the boat. They currently sell in 3 different color combos and another leather version. You want the grey/green? I paid $150 to buy a pair off **** a few weeks ago, the only pair in a 9 1/2 that have sold in a while off the site. Of course I didn't know they run a half size small, and now I need a size 10. My suggestion: Buy the uglier color in stores for $60 right now while they are still on clearance.

I think I might have this shirt back at my parents house. Won't be able to check for at least a couple of months. I'll keep it in mind.

Brian's right - Nike did a bringback of this shoe most recently in 2000, at least around here in NYC. I was able to score a perfect pair of gray/greens, size 12, for $49.99, which I then proceeded to put on ice until I couldn't take it anymore! Since then, I've worn them several times for clay and hard court play, and that old-school full Air insert with poly midsole still cushions like there's no tomorrow. As was also mentioned, they do run a half-size small both because of the length and the low-slung toebox.

    AIr Trainer I

I picked up a pair last week at Finishline for $29.99. They are the white with blue and orange trim. They look pretty good for the price.

the nike air trainer 1 mids will definitely be out in more colors this year. there were at least 3-4 colorways released in 2003 that i know of or bought. still one of the comfiest shoes i've ever worn.

the surprise is the air trainer 1 low (product #308873-001, msrp $90 [ouch], natural gray/light graphite-white), which will be released in late august.

color-wise the lows look alot more like the original mcenroe trainers with the gray/white and green embroidered "nike air" on the back. style-wise they are not like the original air trainer lows, but not too different. i have a pic of the samples if someone can host it for me (pm me if you can help out).

I have the Air Trainer 1's with an all gray color scheme with some green inside the ankle and a pink Nike logo. Too bad I couldn't find the original Mac color. These shoes are super low to the ground and it has a very good fit. The only part of the shoe that caught my eye when I bought it was that the insole had a green, gray, and pink argile plaid design. BTW, did the original Air Trainers have a mesh tongue or an all leather tongue because mine is a mesh.

P.S. Argile Plaids are the golf sweater plaids with a diamond shape.

swan song: those trainers you have were part of a special pack of retro shoes put out by nike called the "twisted prep pack". there will be at least 1 more model out this year that is grey, charcoal and white, still not the originals though (i have a picture of these if anyone wants to see them).

the original mac trainers have been re-released at least 2 times. the most recent being in 2002 (japan only) as far as i know. they were available 2 models, 1 with the green embroidery and 1 with the red embroidery. both of these had the checkerboard nike label on the tongue like the originals.

the original mac trainers had a perforated suede-like material on the tongue if i remember correctly. the retro models have been made with both the mesh and leather tongues. these shoes really are awesome.

i just uploaded two more pics of the air zoom trainer 1 mid. i don't know anything about it except that it will be out at the same time as the air trainer 1 low (according to the catalog pic), and it will retail for $110. i'm guessing it has zoom air (hopefully full length) and the undersole is very different from the original. i'm curious to see how it measures up against the original which is almost 20 years old now (i think?).

There weren't any checkerboard graphics on the original AT Hi's, nor does my bringback pair from 2000 (Training Camp / NYC) have any checkerboard graphics. The tongue label is and was plain white with black/green swoosh and lettering.

By checkerboard, sounds like Mac's '85+ Nike tennis line, which did feature a black and blue checkerboard brand plate, is being confused with the AT Hi's.

The beauty of the AT Hi's is that Mac went outside of Nike's lame-ass tennis shoe line of the time (anybody recall the Air Play or Wimbledon Air series? Didn't think so, and you're better off) and selected an off the wall largely gray shoe to play tennis in. This was consistent with his playing on the original Nike cross-training mids (non-Air) since '82.

I can still recall my first sights of Mac spring of '87 gunning the AT Hi's - I had to have a pair!! Far and away a more advanced shoe than anything else out at that time, except maybe the '86 Lendl Supreme. The full-length Air bag and poly midsole gave incredible cushioning.

thanks for correcting me on that. the retros released in japan in 2002 (a good number of these made their way to the states also) definitely had the checkerboard logo on the tongue and "waffle" insoles. not sure how to exactly describe them, but the insoles had a texture to them. i've uploaded pics of the checkerboard ones, you can see the textured insole if you look closely. i think at1's have always had only a heel air unit, would have been even better if they had full length air!

This fall Nike is releasing the same shoes in a low cut version. Same shoe and color white/gray/green, but without the strap. They look nice. A few of the sample shoes were sold on **** recently, so you can get a look.

I was at a local tennnis shop and looks like Nike is bringing these air trainers back for Fall 2008 collection. Wish I made a copy of that catalog.

do they feature an updated look, or do they look exactly like the original.

p.s. Edberg Fan, those Zoom air orig have been out since 2005 in the green, grey original colors.

yes, i remember the mid in 2004 very well. That's what I thought would be out. Those others are from 2002 with the check tongue. Are they out in Europe with a normal tongue?

I haven't seen any large amount of Air Trainer 1 on the big action site. Are you sure they have just been released in Europe?

I was not aware that they were out in 2004. They will be out late this year in the US. The store I was at was already looking at placing orders for them.

Kanza - They are already available at Size? (a sneaker store in the UK)... that first pic was taken directly from their site and yes, its the checkered tongue version...

Edberg - The Zoom Trainer 1, along with the Zoom Haven, were released in 2004, but according to a fan of the Air Trainer 1 series, he said Nike's marketing of those shoes in 2004 wasn't done that well, hence they 'went under the radar'...

thanks for the link Edberg Fan. This is very interesting because the checkered tongue came out in the 2002 retroed version of the AT1. I still have the orig from 1987 and the rerelease from 1994, both of which just have a Nike logo with the swoosh. I thought the checkered logo would just be a one time thing in 2002 given its release along side the checkered McEnroe "52nd Street" line of rereleased 80's checkered clothing.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll have to pick up a pair

Here you go Sinner. Sorry if the scan aint the greatest quality as its a scan of a scan. The second colorway for those Zoom trainers is white/neutral gray/black/deep royal. I think the first ones come out in July with the royal ones coming out in August. But thats according to the catalog, I really have no idea when they exactly come out. Interestingly enough, the catalog says it will be $80 dollars. Im not sure if thats right, but the prices for the Vapors and Cages are $115 and thats correct.

I also noticed the $80 price tag, could it be because they are truly cross-trainers which were originally used by McEnroe for tennis. The $80 price tag could be more in line with it's cross trainer counterparts... just guessing. I like the original grey, black, white!

I really dont know. Cuz when the zoom trainers first came out a couple years ago, Im sure they were at least 90 dollars. Theres some good technology like zoom air units in both the heel and forefoot. Usually $80 nike shoes would only have air either in the forefoot or heel but usually not in both.

staedtler - Thanks a bunch sir! Thats fantastic news! Loving both colorways... Dunno if they will be that cheap, but originally when they first came out, they didn't sell very well, largely due to what was believed to be poor marketing by nike... Thanks again for your efforts!

^ Yep, I just saw the zoom trainer thread... thanks!

Scans have popped up on several other sneaker sites too...

Nike Air Zoom Tennis Trainer - 324753-101 “Chlorophyll” Colorway

Nike Air Zoom Tennis Trainer - 324753-102 “Deep Royal” Colorway

According to SneakerNews - Nike is back at it again this time re-releasing a mash up of older styles with newer ones and their technology; hence a slightly changed release of the Zoom Air Trainer 1 for those that do not remember it, vivid there is a resemblance to the Air Trainer 1 being thrown together with a free inspired midsole, and a training outsole. This time years release pays homage to John McEnroe who appears on the tongue of the sneaker; who was notorious for bringing the “Trainer” to the tennis courts. The pictured colorway is inspired by the Air Trainer 1’s classic “chlorophyll” colorway and is expected to hit Tennis accounts in their Fall08 shipments which means it will see its way to shops around August, and best of all it is easy on the wallets with a retail price of $80.00.

I wonder if this will be considered to be a 'performance' shoe...?
