My son only wants to wear Adidas now since he learned from some kid at school that Nike pays orphans in china pennies to make their shoes.

Dont know about the orphan thing...but several of the big sports companies, including adidas, use huge sweat shops in asia where people can earn as little as 50p a day. They often choose their locations based on countires where workers unions are illegal and there isnt an obligation to meet working standards that are required in the likes of the E.U.

I enjoy both Adidas and Nike clothing. As for shoes I like both. I currently wear Barricade IV's but have owned several nike shoes.

Yeah, it's one of the evils of capitalism; paying 3rd world workers next to nothing so they can pay millions in endorsement fees to the megastars like Federer and Agassi.

If this was for last year, I would have voted Nike shoes...but man they are just butt ugly this year, ALL of them! So Adidas gets points from me for coolness this year.

These companys will probably start manufactoring here in Australia soon, as our government has stripped the workers of all rights and destroyed the unions:mad: Bring on the sweat shops!!!

And adidas pays workers good wages with decent benefits? Pretty much all major clothing companies use sweatshop labor in the 3rd world.

What you're saying is true but Nike has the worst reputation in the court of public opinion.

The court of American opinion. Do some searches on adidas and you will see that they are not any angels when it comes to labor practices. What is your son really choosing? The lesser of two evils? Does such a protest even make any sense?

Doesn't Adidas own Nike? If so, it's the same people at the top of the pyramid. So, just forget about it.

I just stocked up on BIIs. I figure why keep trying different shoes when you already have a shoe you already like.

Clothingwise I wear both Nike and Adidas as well asa bunch of other brands. I am not brand loyal. Whatever looks good and feels good at a good price is fine by me.

The kid is 11yrs old so he hasn't researched this topic like you have. What is your angle anyways since you're wearing adidas shoes too?

My angle is I buy the products I like the best at the best price. I just don't have any pretenses that one huge multinational company is better than another when it comes how they treat their workers.

Yes,I think that Adidas recently bought Reebok so that their share in the US market would grow.

you still don't get it do you? So your child hears at school "From some kid" that Nike makes orphans work in their factory for pennies. Did you even bothering verifying whether it is true? Or do just let your son make buying decisions based on what some kid at schools says?

When I asked whether it was the lesser of two evils, it was a rhetorical question. You don't even really know whether your kid is supporting a company that is less evil.

Nothing wrong with socially conscious driven consumerism, but
if my kid came home to me and told me the same story about orphans in China working for Nike. I would say show me documentation from a reliable news source. IF you are switching to adidas, then how do you know that they are any better?

Not "Ok some 11 year old kid told you so it must be true, let us only buy adidas from now on"

Well, whether it is right or not,LN_Dad I think you should be a proud Dad!:D I believe that most 11 year old boys don't take into consideration such things as orphans in China before they make their purchases.I certainly didn't.:( Congratulations for bringing up your son in acquiring a social conscience.:D

Ill say this, adidas is probably just as bad as Nike in terms of treating their workers badly. adidas and Nike contract and use the same factories and workers for the most part. Nike got their reputation because well they got caught and the media exposed them. Im sure both companies are making an effort in the right direction. I try to treat shoes like hot dogs, you dont want to know where they came from and how they were made. LN_dad, its good that your son is socially conscious, but he should also know the truth that most footwear companies arent socially responsible. He should probably check out Veja shoes, although they only make casual shoes, the company uses organic materials and treats their workers very well.

    Adidas gets my vote!!

I used to live and die by Nike. They actually used to make functional shoes. They are too concerned with flash. Adidas really has a good product. Some of their apparel could use a little help but I think they have an all-around better collection than Nike.

    Just my .02 cents.

adidas shoes and clothing. nike shoes are rip off and the tick is butt ugly. Adidas will only get better since they just bought reebok, so reeboks clothing and shoes will be adidas's.
