The winter vapors are purple I believe? I've seen pictures of Federer's outfit and Nadals. Federer's polo was purple

Both Roger and Rafa's winter outfits are the best of the year in my opinion.

Yeah, Roger's polo looks great. I play-tested Rafa's crew a little while back from Nike in a different color and it feels great.

Although none of the colorways have them now, I believe the Wimbledon vapor 9's will have the "RF" logo, if anyone cares!

It was just all black. All the clothes I've ever tested from Nike have been all black or white. Super boring haha

Why do the summer shoes not have a mesh toe for breathability like all of the others do? I tried on the blue/white ones for summer and they are not nearly as comfortable as the spring ones with the mesh toes.

I believe the summer v9's have the S/L because this is part of the clay and grass seasons. These surfaces would stain the mesh easier for the player's shoes, but since its S/L, red clay and grass/sand can easily be wiped off cleanly. Once hard court season returns after wimbledon and the olympics, the colorways feature the mesh again (a surface that can not stain the mesh material).

Along with the USO would be the only one's I'd consider buying. Why must Nike put Volt/neon green in every other colorway? That's about the least conservative color for someone like Federer to wear especially when the rest of his clothes don't have day-glo color's in them.

Are the FO V9's all black and cyber? or is there anthracite mixed in like I've seen in some other pictures?

Thanks! I was just asking b/c the picture you posted was noticeably darker than what I had remembered. I also noticed that in other pics, the lining is white, as opposed to black. Looks better in darker colors IMO.

Cool thread. I hope Nike release at least one RF version. Especially since Federer is in such good form these days.

Attn anyone who's owned a pair of Vapor 9s so far this year...

How quickly did the mesh uppers get filthy from dirt and/or sweat? Do they look unsightly?... I was about to buy the new synthetic leather upper version and noticed they have no vent holds in the toe box...

I have used them for about a month. I've only used them on hardcourts and the uppers still look as good as new.

I have had 2 pairs each with holes in them and the mesh has no problems, maybe a little on the side though.

?? I know the mesh ones have holes - they have hundreds.

It's the synthetic leather ones which seem to have no holes. Or do they but just not show up very well in the photos online?

The mesh part would get as dirty as the socks when playing on clay and maybe that would ruin the design. Style trumps Performance inside Nike World lol

Ain't that the truth. When I first saw them on display, I said to myself about the toebox "What is this bul$hiT on the toe box? Plinyl!" God knows there's no such thing as leather anymore.

Because naturally they are concerned about every day Joe Schmo's playing at Roland Garros. Nike doesn't give a flying crap about Roland Garros, only what is going to sell more to the general public, at least this is what their past history with the Vapor would say. They don't release grass court (rubber nubs) soled Wimbledon vapor's because they're concerned about guy's slipping on grass court's, etc. Maybe they've heard the complaints about the mesh not being very durable and are trying to make these shoes last more than a few weeks of play?

the SL models/pics were released on counterkicks when the AO summer line model came out - so it wasnt last minute changes nike implemented... more that the spring/US summer range was intended to be synthetic leather toe box from the beginning

All fashion arguments aside, how people are supposed to wear Tour SL in the summer heat with "insulated" toe box? Even "all-plastic" Vapor VI had the toe box perforated...

I think this is actually an interesting step from Nike that shows they are thinking beyond mere profit, in a focus upon performance
Looking at it from the perspective of creating the SL to cope with natural surfaces that would clog up the mesh, it is done to benefit the consumer.
There is no actual benefit for Nike as a company to have done this, it probably in fact costs them more (ok, I accept this is a negligible amount) to change the design away from mesh for only 2 iterations of the model

Ah, but is that really the case? I guess it would depend on one's definition of "performance". In tennis (competition play) most people want as light of a shoe as possible, take Federer for example. We know from Fabfed's thread that his shoe's are actually lighter and less durable looking than the actual retail model. You could assume from this then that most people would prefer the lighter mesh for performance enhancement.

Now, your second point about it benefiting the consumer I agree with. Who wants their nice mesh toe box filled with clay? Certainly though, there isn't a large amount of clay court surfaces here in the US so It may only affect a small portion of the general public. I personally think it will benefit the consumer by being more durable than the mesh on hard court surfaces whether that was planned by Nike or not.

    Good post.
Lets face it though, to the general public, the difference in weight is about as negligable as the cost difference of Nike making them over the mesh. Whilst it may effect the overall fit and feel of the shoe, at least they are offering both options, surely making this a win/win situation for the consumer?
