Kei Nishikori has to take the early initiative and the first set if he wants a chance to win this. If he doesn't, it's likely going to be Novak Djokovic in 4.

What a joke draw for Djokovic. Didn't even have to play Wawrinka his only "tough" match was against a washed up Murray.

Tough draw is based on projected matchups. Not Djoko's fault that Isner and Wawrinka lost. Nishikori is still a tough matchup.

Regardless, Murray is better than anyone Fed will have to play until the final.

Meanwhile poor Roger has to play Monfils and Berdych who haven't lost any sets so far.

You realize the draws hint at potential match-ups, right? When I saw Federer's draw, I had to do a double-take (seriously) because I wasn't sure if I was misreading. The favorite shouldn't have the hardest draw, IMO, otherwise it negates all the hard work they put in to be the #1. Yet, here was Djokovic having the following in his draw:

Kohlschreiber, Tsonga, Murray, Wawrinka, Robredo, Nishikori, Raonic

    vs Federer's side:

Berdych, Thiem, Cilic, Simon, Dimitrov, Monfils, Agut

One is not like the other...

Worst case scenario for Djokovic: Kohlschreiber -> Tsonga -> Wawrinka

Worst case scenario for Federer: Agut -> Dimitrov -> Berdych

Who had the tougher draw? Djokovic, by a mile. Just because it didn't work out that way doesn't mean the draw was 'easier' for Djokovic.

How is Djokovic's worst case scenario tougher than Federer?:confused::confused:

    Seems relatively equal to me:

    - Kohl vs Agut is a wash give or take
    - Tsonga vs Dimitrov...Dimitrov is ranked higher, younger and honestly the better player
    - Wawrinka vs Berdych...Wawrinka is ranked higher and the better player but both players are tough, Wawrinka for Djokovic and Berdych for Federer

So all I'm saying is if Federer had a joke draw so did Djokovic. They are relatively equal draws to me.

Well, one side has 3 GS wins (if my calculations are correct) and the other has none. That alone should hint at whether or not it's equal. Tsonga has played deep in tournaments before (including Finals) while Dimitrov hasn't gotten past the 4th round (has he?), so we know Tsonga CAN play championship tennis. We know Dimitrov has talent, but he's never done much with it in GSs.

Ah well, we have differing views...respect! :)

Will Kei's understanding that he probably needs to play a little bit beyond his usual self, take the initiative and be extra aggressive stun Nole, like it did Nadal in the Madrid final? Nole looks up to the task of deflecting even the best of Kei's play and his clearly superior first strikes offers him a blanket in this match-up. Under more reliable service protection then, in combination with there being no obvious overwhelming advantages purely off the ground for either player, Nole in 4.

Well Berdych has played in a GS final and Dimitrov reached semis at Wimbledon this year.

I acknowledged Wawrinka to be tougher than Berdych and Wawrinka has 1 of those 3 slams. The other two are with Murray and really I mean if Federer had to play Hewitt in the 1st round I would not be complaining just because he has 2 Slams. Both players' best days are behind them.

    I respect your opinion.

Nishi always seems like he has to play above his level to beat the Big 3, or inform Murray, at a slam. even against Warwinka two nights ago.

he just does not have the offense, normally...

The Novak 2.0 stuff is so incredibly boring too. What next, Nole 3.0?

Nole is firmly planted in his prime right now.. we don't refer to Federer from 2005 as Federer 2.0 who appeared for 1 year then went away.

I think Nole has played to an exceptional standard in the US Open this year and his path through the draw so far is no less impressive than it was in 2011 when Nole version 7.0 was born, or whatever other irrelevant names you guys have for him, and won it.

There's a good reason why Nole is favourite for this title and why more posters are now coming out and saying it doesn't matter which side of the draw you're on, the most anyone will take off Nole here is 1 set. It's because he's playing some amazing tennis. This is peak Nole and it's quite incredible to watch him play his best stuff, especially given that he's maintained a high level now for such a very long time.

It wasn't supposed to be Kohl, but Isner. John has probably the best serve on the tour, bar none, and would be playing with the crowd supporting him. He's troubled Novak every time they played. Isner >>>>> Agut

Tsonga/Murray vs Dimitrov: Are you seriously telling me a guy who had never won a single MATCH at the USO before 2014 is a more serious threat than a two-time slam champion? Or Tsonga, who had just won in Montreal? Tsonga is also the only player to have beaten all of the Big Four in slams. Either Tsonga or Murray would have been infinitely tougher than Dimitrov.

Berdych wasn't playing very well at all in the NA HC season, suffering early round losses. He barely scraped by Klizan. There is still a good chance he'll lose to Cilic. Berdych is a non-factor. Wawrinka on the other hand is a slam winner who can be a real threat to anyone when his shots land in.

Nobody can say Fed had a tougher draw than Djokovic with a straight face.

Djokovic's worst case scenario: R4 Isner, QF Murray/Tsonga, SF Wawrinka/Raonic.
Fed's worst case scenario: R4 RBA/Fognini, QF Dimitrov, SF Berdych/Ferrer

    It's not even close.

Didn't he have a shoulder injury? IIRC it was 7-6, 6-7, 6-0 Nisikori. I have a hard time believing after the first two sets were close, Djokovic got bageled without some underlying reason.

You're absolutely right. I overlooked the fact that Berdych played a final and completely, completely forgot the epic Wimbledon match between Joker and Dimitrov (this year).

    My bad!

Cilic would never beat Djokovic. He has a mental block like all former Yugoslavia players do when playing him.

You realize Murray played out of his mind for 2.5 sets and Djokovic still disposed of him, right? Guy was hitting winners while running backwards. Hell, he hit a couple from about 5 feet behind the baseline.

Novak Djokovic the win, he talked about Kei and said it was going to be a tough match and that for his height he serves well.

Sorry, Andy had 1.5 set where he played great on FH but not the entire aspect of his game. His first serve was way off, all night. His drop shots were horrendous.

Djokovic played terrible in the first 2 sets giving back breaks. More importantly, I didn't think he moved as good as before. often times, he was little slow to get to Andy's FH.

If Kei brings the form he displayed against Wawrinka, it will be interesting. It can go either way.

Djokovic might have timed this right and be rounding into form by final time. Nishikori might have peaked in the QF.

I agree Djokovic isn't playing his best ball yet, but he doesn't need it to win this match, or probably even the tournament. Then if he does bring it up a notch, well pretty much impossible for anyone left then.

Kei will put a real fight here. He had luck that the extra rest day for the upper draw came just at this moment, so he will be fresh enough for this match.

However, Djokovic will prevail and win this USO.

Where is the option for Djoker in 1 or 2 sets. Decent chance Kei will break physically. If not, it could be a very good match.

3 days is enough rest. As I said 3 comments above, he had luck that the extra day of rest for the upper part of the draw came just at this moment. I think he should be fit for the match by Saturday.

Novak on paper is the big favorite. He's been in the final at Flushing Meadows several times. But count out Kei Nishikori at your own peril. This is a match-up I've waited for a long time. Kei will fight hard and try to go for the title. This will either be a 4 set victory for Novak Djokovic or another 5 set epic. I can also see Chang's pupil pulling off the big upset. In Rafa's absence, they all seem to believe they can win the title. This should be a great match.

Would love to see Kei win here. He deserves this and has a lot of talent but isn't that young anymore at 24 (will be 25 in December). Hopefully Kei gives it his all and we witness another 5 set epic.

Voted Djoko in 4, but he may win in 3. Nishikori is a very good player but I don't think he is quite ready to beat Nole yet. On the other hand, Djokovic looks in good form, so I think he'll not only beat Nishikori but win USO 2014.

Djokovic will take care of business here! A 3 setter for djoko, nishi may sneak a set at most. This will be 1st SF and nole will want it done quick as possible and especially with the bad weather conditions forecast.

Being first up is advantage for Novak! :)

I don't think kei can hurt novak. it could be brutal if novak gets him running. murray going for broke was a great preparation for this match. novak withstood a murray hurricane that had to blow itself out. this will be methodical.
