NTRP rating in layman term

without going into a 4.0 being 'real' or not...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaazJs35qCU

a rough count of how many shots on average they can keep it in (less the missed shot, and less the serve).... the average is under 3.

that's what 4.0 is!

so of course that video with Mr. Shirtless is legit 4.5

LOL. The guy serving in the blue at the start of this video was 21-2 at 4.0 singles last year, including going undefeated through Districts, Regionals, and Sectionals for a team that was one match from Nationals. He was bumped to 4.5 (obviously).

SO...he is actually a good representation of what a 4.5 is.
Also...the guy on the second court with white shorts and dark t-shirt ... seems to be ... YOU ?
Not surprising considering the detailed info you have on the "guy in blue" ;). Very nice footwork ... but ... gotta work on that backhand ...eh ? :p

Well, YOU guys said they just bumped all the 3.5's to 4.0 last year!
If this is a 4.0, and I"m 61, I'm easily a 5.0 even with my sprained ankle, twisted knee, sore wrist, and progressively worsening eyes.

We all know you could have made it into the pros if you would have "applied yourself" due to your unique athletic ability.
We also know you see 4.0-4.5 players with close to 130 mph serves quite often...heck you are a falling 4.0, possibly 3.5 who had/has a serve like that....
Now...go back to windsurfing and throwing footballs over the Empire State Building will ya ?!?

The 4.0s do have second serves and aim for the backhand on their first serves. Not many 3.5s can do those things. Even a slow 70mph serve to the backhand of a 3.5 can net a service winner, and change the dynamics of being able to hold serve.

Yeah, this video and the "4.0 #1 Singles" video were shot side by side, so I am in the background of this one. As far as "good representation", I don't think these videos are a good representation of anything. This was a chilly, windy day early in the season in late April / early May in NJ, and (at least on mine) the videographer picked a horrendous game out of the match to upload. Both the guy in blue in this video and my opponent in the #1 singles video are currently 4.5B rated.

The backhand is a work in progress. This winter I have been working on a 2 hander with some topspin for more penetrating regular rally shots (I'll keep using the one hander when I'm stretching or off balance or for lobs or passing shots).

^^^ in the vid where your match is in the background, your opp has some visible swing flaw there - on the FH his arm was fighting the body pretty hard.... didn't see his BH enough to say anything.

the 21-2 guy, also didn't really have a BH (his FH seems ok)...

so basically just sending kicking balls to the first guy's FH and 2nd guy's BH should break them down...

actually in the 'shirtless video', the shirted guy also has this problem on some very high balls, which is strange, considering his FH flows pretty good on most balls.

so in a nutshell, even at the 4.5 level you can survive with swing flaws, with enough athleticism (stamina, footwork).

guy I mentioned who 1 year won the Cryan tourney B draw, has a chop BH slice (major issue when stretched wide) and a hand-slap FH (major issue with deep kicking balls), yet these mediocre strokes + savyness won him the tournament.

in regards to the other comment on 4.5 with 130mph serve..... I have seen 1 strong 4.0 maybe marginal 4.5 who can throw it down 120-125 consistently, but has zilch skill in anything else.... FH, BH, volleys are all crap..... in the amateur world, there is just such a wide spectrum.

And playing / defending future NBA players, even though he's 61 years old and 5'10'' ;)

The 4.5 shirted guy vs shirtless guy, he has a lot more video of him playing other opponents. But the match between the two was absolutely hilarious to watch. Shirtless guy was walking leisurely to most of the balls. He had good anticipation, quickness, and speed. His footwork... He was always balanced for hitting dropshots and lobs. Too bad he plays like a pusher.

Shirted guy plays it safe, and that's why he can't end points. His serves and groundstrokes use topspin, and he never flattens it out when going for winners. He also hits his shots towards the middle, and doesn't go for angles when given the opportunity. There were a few patterns I liked, but he still couldn't convert. His inside-out forehand going to shirtless' backhand. And moving shirtless guy back and forth. Against the dreaded 4.5 pusher, he has to take time away by either putting some mustard on it, or hitting closer to the lines when he's got the pusher on the run.

You can tell when the players are 4.5 or above by the serves. They're able to use spin and pick their spots, esp. to the backhand. Shirted guy uses topspin on both his first and second serves. It's a shame he doesn't flatten it out on the first, because his serve is not what it should be. Even if he serves it to the backhand, it's just too slow to cause service winners. Against another opponent, his opponent had enough time to run around his backhand on the second serve. Sometimes, he is really accurate in serving it down the T, but again it's too slow.

conventional wisdom would categorize the shirted guy as the agressor and the shirtless as the pusher.... however the shirtless guys seems to be 1 step ahead all the time... so in that sense, he is the proactive player, and the shirted guy is the 'reactive' one.

I find the NTRP rating hard to understand and so I try to put it in layman term. Let me start from 3.5 (single only) and work up to 5.5.

3.5 - if he can prepare for the ball, it will come back most of the time but most has no interest on it.
4.0 - if he can prepare for the ball, it will come back with interest most of the time.
4.5 - if he can prepare for the ball, it will come back with vengence most of the time.
5.0 - if he can prepare for the ball, it will come back with vengence most of the time AND he seems to be able to prepare for the ball most of the time no matter what I do.
5.5 - He seems seems to be able to prepare for the ball most of the time no matter what I do and once he is prepared it is lights out for me.

Is my assessment correct? Please correct me if I am wrong.

nice, i like it

maybe we are in agreement cause we are both pushers and cant put away short balls

2.5 - You just started playing tennis and think you're a 4.0 who can beat people who have played for years.

3.0 - Your delusion has grown and now you think you're a 5.0-5.5 and almost ready to join the pros.

4.0 - You realize how hard tennis is and how little you know.

2nd that.

if both guys post a video hitting against the wall, most people would say the guy in the shirt hits with more 'interest'..

but in the match, the naked guy is clearly giving the shirted guy a tour of 'Toys R Us'

Edit - this video is so fun to watch - the naked guy, if post a hitting video by himself, would probablly be given a 3.5.... he's got no power, no footwork (in a text book sense).

But anticipation and point construction actually plays a big part in a match, he doesnt split step, yet he knows the poor shirted guy will hit where, so he just walks there and loop another one back deep lol.

60% of the game is played between the ears... technique is really only 40% (to say the most)... at least in the amateur level.

Poor guy in the shirt. he must have gone home and slept for 20 hours
