A few days ago I got into a heated, somewhat violent, argument with a friend about the numbers on tennis balls. I say they're only to keep track of who's balls are who's. He thinks they have to do with the weight of the ball... what is the case?? (I was kidding about the violence).

hahaha ur friends pretty dumb. your obviously right. i heard that there used to be numbers all the way up to 9 but then wilson decided to try a new marketing tactic by only using the numbers 1-3, that way when u ask for what kind of balls the guys on the next court have they dont just say "we have 6s" they have to say "we have Wilson 3s" that way the wilson brand name gets stuck in your head. I guess its pretty smart of them, but its annoying for the rest of us, especially when the people on the next court end up having the same balls as you even tho that rarely happens.

I thought in a can of 4 there are two 1's and two 2's, so that you split the 1's and 2's up for 1st serve and 2nd serve.

I don't think it's even allowed to have different weighted balls. Not 100% sure because the French Open used supposedly heavier balls, but I don't think you can buy heavier balls. Never really looked that closely though.
