Once again, here we are: two or three gfs, a wife and a couple kids, three or four jobs later (more for some of us) still keeping up with tennis and our favorite player. He's like the the sun rising in the east or Nadal complaining about knees that need rest. A forever legend that never quits, Roger Federer is without a doubt..... the very ***** best!! Comebackerer!! The true #1 let's have a test!

#1 and best player aren't the same thing.

Nadal has the computer ranking because he has demonstrated what that measures (i.e. consistency and playing a full schedule).

Federer on the other hand is obviously the best player of the year. More big titles, a perfect record against Nad, a way better win %, and he's also just been playing better tennis more generally.

Nadal playing and losing at a few extra events has been the difference points-wise. But he still deserves the ranking.

Possibly the most disputed #1 ever? Assuming Roger runs this field.

Fed has also preserved himself.
Nadal has run himself into the ground physically for what could end up being a 140 point gap between them.

Fed on the other hand has skipped half the calendar and still got that close. And he's likely finishing in good form while Rafa has gone in for another engine rebuild. That should count for something.

I wouldn't say disputed. At least I don't dispute it.

It is undisputed that Nadal has earned the ranking based on the rules set for it by the ATP. He can't not deserve that.

But at the same time nobody serious can dispute that Roger has been the best player of the last year. Just pointing to the number of points rings very hollow there, although I'm sure plenty of VB members will push that forever anyway. By every other metric Fed is convincingly ahead, and the points gap is likely to be negligibly small.

Tennis-wise it's no contest. Fed has beaten him every time they've played and has a much better record against the rest of the field too (both Top 10 and overall). He's also been the only one to win a slam with a hard draw (AO).

It does indeedily. Maybe not in 2017, but it will next year. I'll be surprised if Nadal features anywhere meaningful outside clay.

I've noticed a bit of a meme on here about him winning the AO the last few weeks.

The only way that happens is if he's lying about the injury and also faces nobody like at the USO. Even then it's unlikely given the surface and conditions.

It's pretty much clay or bust unless the field gets even worse somehow.

And I don't believe he's lying about the injury.

This.

Roger deserves it 'too'. But that cannot happen without taking it away from Nadal and rightfully, it cannot/should not be taken from Nadal as well. So, I guess, fortunately/unfortunately, the computer determining the order in the end and whatever we get, lets be it.

Merit? Rafa only played the WTF because he felt he had to (admirable) because he knows #1 morally belongs to Federer!
Depends on how you define "merit".

It could be being the best player (in which case it's Federer), or earning the accolade as per the specific rules (in which case it's obviously Nadal).

I don't mean to sound the alarm but Roger looked a bit ginger out there against Zverev. He was pissed off the whole time, with a lot of serving problems and weak, weird groundstrokes, opting for a lot of drop shots. I think the back might be coming back.

Out of pride he showed up. Quite an entertaining match btw with a bad knee hobbling. It just goes to show though really how much Rafa thought he had to do to prove his ranking.

If Fed wins the WTF, both Federer and Nadal have had a better season this year than Pete ever had, actually.

Nadal has passed Pete in slams this year too, and Fed has snatched Wimbledon away completely.
This has been an awful year for Sampras fans. Nadal's potential 140 point lead over Fed in the rankings is the one saving grace from utter ruin.

Yep. Fed and Nadal really respect each other, both for their abilities and as people.
Anyone who suggests otherwise has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

Fortunately he's not going to have to do anything stellar to fall across the line.
He can lose his next match, and the other guys don't exactly inspire.

I'm glad he's not facing healthy Nadal if the back is truly back though. But I doubt it. I think he just doesn't like playing Zverev.

Sock beating Z in the next round would be good for Fed's chances. And it could easily happen.

I agree and would worry on most surfaces but indoors is always a Fed advantage. Take a pain pill and whoop some Arse.

Oh lord, if Federer had only played one or two tournaments during the clay season and gotten mediocre results, he would be competing for world #1 right now. But he didn't so you fans need to go ahead and face the reality that he's #2 for tangible reasons of his own making and not due to a twist of fate.

He should have. Just a couple quarters or something. 2018 play a warm up and play FO one last time.

Nadal deserves #1. Imo Federer does too. But Nadal is mathematically better, so be it.
Both players deserve it . . But only one can b #1.

Nadal has knee problems because, unlike Federer, he doesn't skip major tournaments like Slams.

There are now more threads claiming moral #1 victory for Fed than he has grand slam titles. lol.

Even Fed conceded #1 and had no problem doing so with having an otherwise excellent year.
