Olympic Gold: Rafa won it on HC, Djoker and Fed did not win it on their best surface

Olympic gold only means something to whoever wins it. Kind of the way a kayak team wins it and nobody gives a hoot. For many tennis fans it is a bizarrely overrated event.
Spain wanted Rafa as their flag bearer in Olympics. That’s a big honour. So tennis means something for them.

You didn't understand my post...

Athletes have fun at Olympics, but fans of major sports (football, basketball, tennis) don't put nearly as much importance as the players, and even some players have to feign patriotism for financial and image reasons...

For Rafa and Novak it means a lot. Think it has to do for the love of your country and people. If you don’t have that obviously it means less.

I always had the impression that Federer was less interested in DC than the other two. Maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps all the BS talk about THE GOLDEN SLAM made Roger get more motivated to win the singles gold...

Djokovic places huge importance for a SIMPLE reason: Serbia wins 2-3 medals overall per Olympics, hence his win would be a big addition to that. Plus, in Serbia EVERYONE pretends to be a huge patriot, it's a remnant from the 90s wars when anyone not waving a flag 11 times a day was considered suspicious.

Isner? If he somehow won gold it would be just one more medal out of 100 for the US of A...

As for Rafa, he loves team sports and likes being part of a team, that's probably a big reason why he likes playing this nonsense event.

Is basketball a lesser sport? Nope. One of the most popular sports in the world. In fact, it is even more popular than tennis.
Do you have sources to support this claim? According to my sources, tennis is more popular sport than basketball:

It can do with Federer being more international from birth. He isn’t fully from Switzerland, he is born somewhere else and has a different upbringing than the people from there. Parents from different countries, wife from another place.
I can relate to this myself. I am Norwegian citizen with Norwegian mother, but Italian father. I cheer just the same for Italy as I do for Norway. After my years in London I feel for England too.

Federer was born and raised in Basel. His father is Swiss, his mother is from South Africa. His wife was born in Slovakia but raised in Switzerland.

With Olympics is a matter of timming also.Who would have been the favorite to win the olympic gold had the event taken place in 2011 or 2015 ? That's right.Olympics can also catch a player injured ( like Fed in 2016) and because there are few opportunities to win it, this event should not be overrated in this sport.

This is interesting. Even as a Fed fan (does have a gold... I know I know, but he does have a tennis gold :sneaky: ), I do find this important, as Rafa won gold on a HC.

Fed has his chance on grass, and Djoker had his chance on hard. Both failed to win gold.

While this shows there is very few opportunities to get it done, it also shows that Rafa did it on (at the time) his worst surface and Fed and djoker could not on their best surface.

Wiki says she was born in another country, not in Slovenia to my surprise! She is also older than Roger. That I didn’t know as well.

Why did you think she would be born in Slovenia? She was born in Slovakia in 1978 (in what was then the united country of Czechoslovakia). She emigrated with her family to Switzerland when she was very young.
