On this day... - Part II

the day when a teenager from Belgrade Novak Djokovic officially introduced himself to the tennis world.

Two weeks before this date, he reached his first ever Masters final, and lost to Rafael Nadal. http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/on-this-day-part-i.558420/ Not many expected Novak to show high quality tennis at two consecutive tournaments, but he had other plans.

Daniele Bracciali, Michael Llodra and Feliciano Lopez all fell in straight sets. The draw wasn't kind like in California, as Djokovic and Nadal met this time in the quarterfinals.

Nobody in the crowd regretted coming to the match after what they witnessed. The match which probably only missed a 3rd set was full of magic from both players and peaked in the last game. Both were very determined and "stubborn", but Djokovic eventually prevailed 6-3 6-4 and recorded a first victory over his biggest rival...

First of many...

In the semifinal, the battle of teenagers, Djokovic had to face his good friend Andy Murray, another big talent. They met at the same stage in Indian Wells two weeks ago, and the Serbian prevailed without many problems. A more one-sided match than that in Miami wasn't expected. However, of all the matches that this fantastic rivalry
trollface.png
produced, and there have been over 30 of them, none were such beatdowns as this one was.

It was 1-1 in the 1st set and the Scot had a triple break point. However, he didn't convert. In fact, he didn't win any more games at all. "This was my worst match on the ATP Tour", said a very disappointed Murray afterwards.

In the final Djokovic had to face Guillermo Canas, who shocked everyone by defeating the dominant #1 Roger Federer both in Indian Wells and Miami, first as a lucky loser, then as a qualifier.

He couldn't complete his miracle run, despite all the good effort. Djokovic was too strong.

Miami Masters got its youngest ever winner - Djokovic won his 1st ever Masters in great fashion, without dropping a set

"Now I feel like for the first time in my career that I am at the needed level, to be among best three in the world. I think I proved that by beating Nadal here. Of course, I am yet to beat Federer, but I hope that moment will come too", said Novak. He would be presented with the chance of doing that at the next hard court Masters tournament...

"I worked hard to come to this spot and I hope that this is just the beginning of a long and successful career", said Novak.

Well said.

The 2007 Miami final was blessed with a nice atmosphere, as Serbians and Argentinians, well known passionate people, cheered loudly for their respective countrymen. Djokovic complimented Canas' supporters during the ceremony, while also stating he likes the banners that his own fans made. "Novak Djokovic No 1 made in Srbija", "Djokovic future no 1", they said.

Again, well said.

Even a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step - For Novak, the first step was 2007 Miami Masters

...

Now in 2016, his position in tennis is quite different. Miami was conquered many times again, but the tournament currently being played has more significance than the ones before.

"It is always good to return to the court on which I had a lot of success, especially in 2007, when I here won for me at that point the biggest trophy. I have those memories and they help me", said Djokovic prior to the beginning of this Miami.

He is looking to tie Agassi's record of 6 Miami titles and further cement his place as the greatest slow hard court player of all time. But that is not the most important thing. Rafael Nadal looked like holding the record of (27) Masters titles for a long time. Djokovic however managed to reduce the gap and eventually tie the record, mainly thanks to his outrageous 2015 results. http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/inde...es-achieved-by-novak-djokovic-in-2015.549176/ Now, almost a decade after his first title, Novak has a chance to become the greatest Masters player ever, and he can accomplish that in the same city where it all started - hot Miami.

Two wins away from rewriting the record books once again. This time in his way stands the younger generation. If Goffin fails to stop him, it will come down to either Nishikori or Kyrgios to prevent the world #1 in the final.

Don't miss it.
