Just read this, unbelievable. I would be furious if they didn't pay out:

From The Australian: "Punters who staked their hard-earned money on Amelie Mauresmo to win the women's singles final on Saturday got a rude shock when it came time to collect from TAB Sportsbet. Even though Mauresmo's name is on the Australian Open trophy, all that unsuspecting punters got for their outlay was their original stake. "The rule states if a match is not completed all bets on the result are null and void and their original stake money is automatically refunded," TAB Sportsbet spokesman Glenn Munsie said yesterday."

On the other hand if you bet on Henin you would be applauding her behavior - it saved you money.

OUCH! Poor Mauresmo fans, not only did they watch their lady get SCREWED, they didn't even get money for it.

Henin should watch herself... she's got enough money to hire a bodyguard right? Wouldn't want to be the next Monica Seles.

It's the punters' own fault they went with a betting agency that doesn't pay out on matches where the opponent retired. I have a friend who bet on Mauresmo and the agency paid out. :)

Hmmmm....interesting. Is it possible that Henin-Hardenne herself, her team, her friends and family all bet on her to win and in order to prevent her and them from losing a ton of money, she decided it was better for her not to finish the match as soon as she realized there was no way she could win? Hmmmm.....

Sounds like this has the potential to be another huge controversy if anyone can prove that people close to JHH had put money on her with TAB Sportsbet to win.

Wait a minute, but the match was completed.
It doesn't matter how. It's got start and got finish. So it is completed.

Are Mauresmo and Henin still to play that match? No.
    They have played it.
I think TAB should be taken to court.

If that indeed happened, JHH would likely be banned from pro tennis for life and be banned from consideration for the Hall of Fame forever, just like with Pete Rose.

wat about sports betting. the fact of the matter is that you bet on mauresmo to beat justine, and thats what happened. it goes down in the record books. look at it this way, mauresmo won the tournament, THEREFORE won the match. there is no difference between a win through match completion or retirement. a win is a win

    LOL!
The WTA would pay dearly in court if they tried to ban Juju.
Otherwise they could forget tennis tournaments in the European Union ...

Yes there is a difference between a with through match completion or a win through retirement.

One is a win by match completion, and the other is a win through retirement. ;-)

Some betting agencies distinguish between the two, and say so in the fine print.
    Some don't.
When betting money, you should probably read the fine print to know what exactly you're betting on.

Not at all, they would be quite within their rights to ban Justine if she was found to be guilty of match-fixing. I looked at the rules on the WTA site, they say that the maximum punishment is a permanent ban.

If they could prove that Justine did tank the match for betting purposes, then they would ban her. The European tournaments would not be able to, nor would they want to, do anything about it.

Retiring so the bet is void is no "match-fixing".
Especially if only some of her friends bet on her WINNING the match.

I heard a bit about the Seles stabbing. I was wondering though, was there a theory behind it that had anything to do with the betting world involvement (underground insiders or no insiders, either one)? All I know was that she supposedly was the the best and that no else could ever take her rank (unless when she is to get older) and so a hit man was hired, Tanya Harding-style to keep that legacy from continuing on. (LMAO, Tanya has such a bad rep. that her name is an adjective in the dictionary.:D lol...[recalls Nancy whinining and crying], "Why???.why why why why why?"]

Hmmmmm ... have you seen the pimples in Venus' face last year? Is it possible that Venus herself is/was on juice? Hmmmm .....

Sounds like this has the potential to be another huge controversy if anyone can prove that Venus took anabolica to win.

Yes, the betting world drew huge profits from Seles being stabbed.
Because the odds were 150 000 - 1 that Seles would not be stabbed during the Hamburg tournament ....

Yeah, the jealous german fan stabbed the #1 player Monica Seles with a sharp knife because the odds of the overrated #2 german girl of becoming #1 again and winning more slams is 1,000,000.00 -1 as long as Seles was still active on the WTA Tour.

She was the knife#1 for a reason...

    I don't agree.
I think it was OK that Seles got a co-#1 ranking for more than a year when she returned in summer 1995. To call that "knife#1" is insulting to poor Monica ....

    I don't think so.
Graf would have won her FOs, Wimbledons, her USO and AO anyway.
Don't forget that she has 6 FOs, 7 Wimbledons, 5 USOs and 4 AOs under her belt.

Pierce and Sanchez types profited perhaps. Because they were there when Graf failed in 93-95. Both players had a negative H2H against Seles. Graf won 67 % of her career matches against Seles, though.

I don't think Monica became number one because of a knife by one of her compatriot fans! LOL

    Re Caveat Emptor:

Indeed, all gambling contracts (at least in common law jurisdictions such as the USA and the UK) are void and unenforceable in the courts.

Bookmakers are bound only by goodwill ie, if they don't pay when they blatantly should, they will become disreputable and therefore lose custom.

Same goes for casinos, I'm afraid. Imagine going to Vegas, cleaning out, and then being told '**** off we ain't giving you a cent' when you go to collect your winnings ! Would never happen, but they would be within their legal rights to do so.
