one of the reasons federer won wimbledon 05 was because he was fat

    at the bottom

"Conventional wisdom has it that athletes should have flat stomachs. But we don't find this to be true. Stomachs can only be flat when the muscles are tense and microfibers have formed around them, making them inflexible. Much of the work we do these days with elite and amateur athletes is undoing the damage to their stomach muscles from sit ups and other 'core work'. Sit ups and 'core work' overuse the stomach muscles, making them sore and stiff. When this happens, the connective tissue between the muscles develops microfibers to help immobilize and repair the muscles. These microfibers bind the area together so that it can heal. Unfortunately, once the soreness has passed, the microfibers not only do not go away, they tend to accumulate over time, making the stomach muscles progressively stiffer as the athletes get older.

When you inhale, the stomach muscles need to stretch, otherwise the diaphragm has to work harder. This extra work fatigues the diaphragm, creating a feeling of effort and fatigue in the athlete. In addition, tight stomach muscles prevent the rib cage from expanding easily, and thereby add to the work of taking in air. Federer's stomach muscles are relaxed, making his breathing easy and increasing the amount of oxygen he takes in during the match. Roddick's stomach muscles are tight, restricting his oxygen intake and making every breath more effortful. Even though it flies in the face of conventional wisdom, relaxed stomach muscles can only make any athlete's job easier."

kind of ridiculous. Federer is by no means "fat" he has a normal physique, and is actually skinny. But I find it to be a load of BS anyway.

No what he's saying is that because Federer doesn't have ripped abs, he breathes easier and is more flexible for his shots. I buy into that. If having ripped abs = slam success then how come Tommy Haas hasn't won a single one?

I don't know much about the physiology of men, but what they are saying about his (lack of) abs, sounds logical..

    ROTFLMFAO!!!

This is probably the biggest BS i've heard in a loooooooooong time about sports and the body.

It's so funny that these fat computer pussies "analyze" pro sports when they probably weigh in at 200 lbs and have never played a sport since 6th grade PE class.

I have a six pack and i can tell you right now that it is the best thing to have in any sport. Any movement requires some degree of abdomina movement, and the stronger your abs are the better you will do.

Let me say one more thing: Bruce Lee.

While he won "only" 2 majors, he may have played his best tennis during 2005. He was one match away from tying McEnroe's won loss record for the year and probably would have done in the the Masters final had he not played injured.

Bill Walsh would never draft a player who was "ripped". Can't remember why, but it worked for him. As for Federer, he was far from fat.

Congrats OP on discovering this rather old website of somaxsports. It's been discussed to death before, way back when I first joined these boards. Most people dismissed their claims, but I think we cna agree that being flexible helps with movement

This will be conventional wisdom soon enough, it's right. Most people just haven't taken the time to think it through and/or experiment with their bodies to find the most efficient state for particular activities.
