I've never seen 2 more biased and idiotic people/commentators. All they do is praise the Williams sisters.

Venus against Sharapova, they're both whining about how Maria fist pumping is disrespectful to Venus. What a joke. Then Chris Fowler pointedly asks 'has Serena ever done that?' and they both ignore him. Hypocritical and totally unsuitable.

More nonsense from Chris Evert - "Maria didn't have to do anything special". Now they're even making the excuses for the sisters and not giving the opponent any credit.

Yeah, they were being very reactionary and biased. Granted, I don't think they were being as biased as you are making it out to be but I mostly agree.

I think this is the problem when you divert from the standard sports commentary team formula. This is how it should be:

-A good broadcasting specialist as the play-by-play person.
-A respected ex-pro player as the color commentator.

Any time a network drifts from this formula it ends up sucking.

It's not that. These 2 are simply biased and make no attempt to hide it. MJF is the only who tries to do her job fairly, but she's not on that often. Pam is esp cringeworthy in everything she does.

It's a little off topic, but Lleyton Hewitt's commentating at last year's Aus Open was fantastic - he added some quality insights having previously competed with the players.

That sounds like the time Agassi did commentary at USO - Fed vs someone. It was fantastic.

Hewitt, Roddick and Safin would be a dream combo commentating team. Hewitt=legit analyzing, Roddick=sarcasm and wit, Safin=wildcard b1tche$

Just in case you wanted to know, Fed played Roddick that night. It was the USO QF from 2007, and it was very insightful I agree, but then again, it is Agassi. As for the OP I agree as well. Evert especially doesn't make any attempts whatsoever to hide her bias. She's a huge Federer fan as well, and I am too, but even when she talks about him I cringe sometimes. She said something once along the lines of "I just want Roger to win." Fine for someone like me to say, but not her, and not on a big network like ESPN.

I think it's time for ESPN to get rid of all they're tennis people, seriously it's a total bore to listen to, BBC coverage is much better. I think we're all tired of hearing Pam/Chrissie constantly praising the Williams sister for anything and bringing down they're opponents. I'm also tired of hearing JMac bringing up Bjorn Borg every opportunity he gets. We get it buddy, you were once great, we respect that, but you gotta let it go, that was 30 years ago...

I don't understand why they don't go after newly retired Roddick or even Agassi. They both played against the current top players and would bring a much needed fresh perspective. Roddick was always one of the more interesting person to interview because he told it like it is, I have no doubt he'd be a good color commentator.

And one other thing about ESPN. Why is it that they always provide awful coverage? It seems that whenever there's american's playing, regardless of they're ranking or interest level, it's always what they broadcast. As a tennis fan, I want to see the most interesting match-ups and highest ranked players. Do I care that Raonic or the Williams sisters are playing when Federer or Djokovic is playing a match at the sametime? Nope!

Yeah I remember that match. Roddick lost in straights I believe but was playing phenomenally well, Federer was just several classes above. it was the perfect match for Agassi to commentate on.

Oh wow...Safin/Hewitt/Roddick...I'd like those three guys to announce my entire life.

I'm not disputing the fact that Evert shows bias. But there is no way any of you fed/rafa die hards could hide your biases if you were on tv either. She is a decent commentator who obviously knows alot about the game.

That would be epic. Safin showing up drunk with a couple of hookers at his side letting the comments fly off his tounge. :)

That is a bit true though. Venus played a terrible match.

i enjoy watching the williams sisters matches online when there's no commentary. It's tough to enjoy a match when the commentators are so biased for a particular player.

I really don't care if a commentator is biased toward a particular player. It's not like it's an election and they are going to influence the outcome. It's just a game, and we all have favorites. I'm actually a little curious to know who they like. What I don't like is when commentators have a narrative in their mind as to what the match will be before it starts and then they comment accordingly, even if the exact opposite is happening on the court in real time. That is really annoying.

I remember Agassi revealing Beckers service 'tell' - how his tongue used to wag in a certain direction :)

I think Fed will make a great commentator as well - he's very insightful, seems to remember every point, and has a sense of humor as well.

    IDK...

sometimes Evert comes off as a true blonde and former valley girl in her commentary.

As an aside, Navratilova can not help but comment on former self in any given match she's commentating on

asked if Serena has the best women's serve ever; she says -- yes, because her shoulders are bigger than mine and therefore she can hit it bigger than I ever had a chance to...
