The following link has the breakdown of world #1's in the open era:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ATP_number_1_ranked_singles_players

The interesting bit to me is how many times some players lost and regained the world number 1 - those with 5 or more include:

    Player
    Times Regained
    Consc Weeks
    John McEnroe
    14
    58
    Pete Sampras
    11
    102
    Jimmy Connors
    9
    160
    Ivan Lendl
    8
    157
    Bjorn Borg
    6
    46
    Andre Agassi
    6
    101
    Stefan Edberg
    5
    24

I also added the longest consecutive streak in weeks that they held the top spot. Interestingly, McEnroe held it for just 1 week on 7 different ocassions losing it to Borg, Connors, Lendl; each of which would hold it for a short period and relinquish back to Mc.

I realize that there's allot of back and forth about the strength of eras. Nonetheless, Federer's 237 consecutive weeks to me is allot more impressive feat than the 287 total, particularly in light of the fact that Connors is second behind him with 160.

Connors lost it for one week, then held for another 84.

I think the ranking points have changed quite a lot since the '80s so it's hard to compare ...
