PLEASE rate my first serve!

    Here is my serve (after a recent lesson with my club's director):

    So obviously from my lesson, I was told about several things that need to be changed. For instance, I know that my serving arm is suppose to follow through and coil across my body when my motion ends. Also, I was told that my legs are poorly balanced, and that my right one is kind of throwing me off balance when I land on it.

    Anyway, these are just a few of the comments that I recall from my lesson, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could dissect my serve as much as possible, and help me change it to the correct method... I find that even though I was told what I'm doing wrong, I'm still having trouble implementing these changes while I practice, and so the proper form just isn't coming and my serves are still inconsistent.

    You have a bit of a pause in your serve before you go into the back scratch position. You want it to be one continuous motion. I think part of this is because you're tossing the ball too high. So, if you lower your toss you might be forced to speed up your racquet and get rid of the pause.

    Also, I think you are a little off balance and I think if you brought your back leg a little foreward then you'd have a stronger base.

    one must utilize their knee bend to launch into the ball. Try to land into the court with your left foot. I see you are on your tippy toes when you reach for the ball. Try to jump into the ball more.

    lean a little bit more forward when you are hitting through the ball, and try to end your arm up on the left side of your body for more racquet speed.

    Your biggest mistake is not following through. By stopping like you do, you are actually de-celerating by the time you hit the ball. Continue right through on your swing, and worry about the other stuff later.

    Yes, the follow through needs to be complete, also use some knee bend (not too much at first) and get your toss a little closer to you. Other than that you're on the right track. I'd say NTRP 3.5.

    i kinda agree u kinda stop on the follow through just swing it all the way i would rate it bout 3.0 but then again its coming from a 3.5 here so.... yea

    Great. You are getting excellent racket drop and good pronation there. I will get you some frame by frame analysis in a bit.

    Mona,

    I just went through your serve frame by frame. You have an incredible motion there. You are getting a great drop and awesome pronation. I was pretty shocked, actually, because it's not easy for someone to get this so easily.

    The only thing you need to do is to finish the stroke a little more, and to get your feet closer together in the beginning and not bend your knees so much. I have compared you to two pros here:

    Imho, it might be better to reduce the angle of the right arm at the "trophy position" by bending the right elbow a little more. It looks like the rather straight right arm at the position would put a strain on the shoulder more than needed or may prevent getting a good swing speed without a strain.

    you need more shoulder rotation for extra spin on the ball

    You should do more of what Sharapova (oh lord, I'm saying to copy something of Sharapova) and bring your right foot forward so your feet are or almost touching. I would think this is more comfortable and that it would be easier to produce spin and power as you can more easily thrust up into the ball. Again, follow through as others have said, try to be loosy-goosey (did I just say that? Lord, take me now!) and keep the racquet moving, even if barely, at all times. Just my 2 cents.
