    Strengths: everything other than serve

Weakness: serve. It is consistent but not powerful enough.

Not going into too much detail....

    Strength:

    Great athleticism
    Fitness/Stamina
    Backhand
    1st Serve
    Footwork

In between: Net game... I can hold my own against most but I'm mainly a baseliner. As far as forehand goes... it's still good at the level I play in. I can still rip a winner a bunch of times, but it's a tad inconsistent for me to rate it as a great strength.

    Weaknesses:

    Touch
    Sometimes mental

Now can a 4.0 actually have ANY strengths?? For instance, is a strong 4.0 serve really a strong serve?? I dont think so, so this is kind of pointless.

I'll bite, great idea for a thread!

    Strengths:
-Mental strength. I very rarely get rattled on the court.
    -Speed/Defense
    -Dependable groundstrokes
    -Net play
-Full-Run CC backhands. It can really

    Weaknesses:
-On the run forehand. It can put up weak returns.
-2nd serve reliability. I'm currently restructuring my kick serve, so I am averaging around 3-5 DF's a set in singles right now.
-I tend to play it too safe/get complacent in real match play with playing the higher % shots, and not taking enough risks changing directions.

I went 8-0 at 4.0 and 1-1 at 4.5 this year, so I am looking forward to the (hopeful) bump up!

second serve: twist and kick serve with good movement
return of serve: both wings and on both sides love running around on the
    add side
solid groundstrokes on both sides and can flatten out on both wings when needed
    good footwork
    good preparation

    Weakness:
too slow: two major back and ankle surgeries
can't play two tough long matches in one day
try and end points quickly thus making too many unforced errors
make mental errors on point construction
get bored during matches and can lose two or three games in a row

    -Inside-out forehand;
    -Footwork;
    -Rally balls (both sides);
    -Good second serve.

    Weaknesses
    -Inconsistent first serve;
    -Volleys;
    -Overhead;
    -Return of serve.

My favorite shot is the high inside-out forehand and I use it often.

As for my approximate level of play, I have no idea. Usually, people fear me because all you see of me in hitting sessions are things I do best... in a match, my serve and return do limit my abilities.

    From 4.0 level perspective.

    Strengths:

No glaring weakness for opponent to pick on - have always tried to work on a well rounded game.
Can hit aggressively off both FH and BH.
1st Serve can occasionally get free points.
2nd serve is consistent and can place it fairly well.

    Weaknesses:

Second serve is consistent but opponents can attack it - not enough spin and/or pace.
Mobility gets worse with each passing year.
FH can occasionally go off - pull off and/or open early - out of sync with core rotation

I am 48. I find that in matches I serve and volley even though it is not my intention. It is because once I lean forward on the serve, I am too lazy to recover and go back!

In all seriousness though, I think it's really hard to assess your own game. I have a good kick serve and my forehand is consistent; I also know my volleying (correct form and all) and backhand are works in progress. I have a winning record this year at 3.0 and 3.5 and have only lost one mixed match at 7.0...but even then I feel sheepish saying that I have strengths knowing that a good 4.0 or 4.5 would absolutely tear me to shreds. So I'd rather keep telling myself I am terrible, if only to motivate myself and sandbag the rest of my opposition!

5.0 would be a pretty safe bet. The only way to know would be to play a varied bunch of 5.0's and see how you do against them. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if you were pushing low 5.5. I know guys that hung out about where you are ranked, and they're all at least 5.0.

    Strengths:
Backhand- can place on a dime, consistent, and I can unload on it if needed

Net game- always been a critical part of my game, and remains the strongest part of my game, including overheads

Mental strength- I win most, if not all, of my matches by out thinking and out competing my opponents

Movement- quickness and fitness are also vitally important for me

Aggression: I look at that as an advantage simply because the way that I approach the game, it will always be in my hands, so whether I win or lose, it was my doing. I just hate the thought that I could lose a match and it be out of my control.

    Weaknesses:
Forehand- oh man...it's just bad. It's not fundamentally sound mostly because for the first 5 years or so that I played tennis I would simply rip a forehand to my opponents backhand and charge into net, so I never really developed a solid, reliable stroke. I can't pass worth anything off of it, and I honestly couldn't say that I can rally consistently with it, especially against the caliber of guys that I play. It's a shot that I will try to instantly put myself on the offensive with, so I tend to hit way too many errors.

Serve- I don't know if I would call it a weakness, but it isn't anything special. I can place it well, but I don't hit it particularly hard and I don't hit with any ridiculous spin, so it's a relatively attackable shot.

Footwork- really just that I tend to catch to ball out of my strike zone way too often, which causes unnecessary errors

Injuries: for whatever reason I tend to get injured way too often. Not little insignificant injuries, but legitimate I-need-to-take-time-off injuries.

Still a junior, but I would venture to say 5.0-5.5

Offensive volleys (coming to net on my terms)
    Slice backhand
Height (being 6'7" helps quite a bit)

    Weaknesses:
    Backhand (starting to come along)
    Consistency
    Mental toughness/nerves (due to below)
Lack of experience against top players
Footwork (mostly become am issue in long matches)
Variety on serve (not a great kick serve)

Probably around a 4.5 I don't really know exactly, going to play D3 tennis

Above average speed around the court.
solid one hand backhand and forehand.
Good volley skills and return of serve both wings.
Adjust well and play well under pressure.

    Weaknesses:
    <crickets>.....

just kidding...serve is horrible...no confidence is why I rely heavily on returning. I expect to get broken at least once every set so count on having to break a minimum of 2 times. My serve relies on how well your serve is...meaning the more I feel comfortable about breaking you, the more I gas my serve...like I said...I have very little confidence and with the speed I possess I just am not motivated to work on my serve. :)

Can only drill overheads through the middle of the court and that's when I'm able to get them in.

FH - been told its a weapon, I can rally ok with it, always looking for a chance to be aggressive and put opponent under pressure. Definitely the strongest part of my game
Serve - decent pace and spin, I dont DF often meaning I can sometimes just let go on first serves, win quite a few points just on serve
Volleys - been playing some doubles so volleying has improved and I like coming in when I can

    Weaknesses
Serve - yes a weakness as well as a strength. When under pressure I get tentative and hold back on the swing, causing more errors. If my serve goes the rest of my game follows
BH - its a one hander and I have just learnt to hit it with topspin and drive, but in a game I resort to slicing, I am working on getting out of this mentality, it is my biggest challenge
    Footwork - its lazy
Approach to net - not good, I give the opponent too many chances to pass me

Rating? Lord knows - I play second team for my club which is a pretty good one.

Yep. I play 4.5s and some teaching pros around the state sometimes. I have friends that are either on my level or above.

    I beat a 5.0 teaching pro (granted, he's 43) 6-3;7-6. Beat a 4.5 6-0;6-1. I lost to my own coach 6-2;6-4... he's a 5.0.

I lost to a friend.... a recent Clemson signee (5 star) 6-1;6-3. Lost to a top 40 in the country 6-1,6-2.

Just a couple examples. Safe to say I should be a 5.0.....

    When I'm playing often:

Plan A = Aggressive all court game centered around a big serve and first strike returns. Weakness: Consistency and footwork, Strength: Speed, variety

Plan B = Defense. Slice, drop shot, lob...block it back, make them try and hit past me. Weakness: Pride Strength: Speed and consistency.

Until both kids are sleeping through the night, I don't feel like a tennis player. I'm still winning (I feel Tennis is losing) but have no confidence to play my usual game. Ugh.

    Strengths:
Stamina (mostly evident in 100 degree heat)
    Footspeed
    Anticipation
Consistency and improving accuracy from the baseline (particularly on my forehand)
    Service return
    Weaknesses:
A sufficient slice serve, but not much else. I have a weaker serve than guys I beat 2 and 2.
    Often cringeworthy volleys (particularly backhand)
    No overhead

Counterpunching 3.5 (went 6-1 this season in 3.5 UltimateTennis; won consolation in a USTA 3.5 tournament last month.)

    Strengths:
    Lateral movement
    Stamina
    2HBH CC
FH, I/O and DTL, varying spin & placement
    Slice serve into body
    Serve placement

    Weaknesses
    Net-game
    Forward movement
    Reading of the short balls
    Serve speed
    2HBH DTL
Going too close to the lines, trying too much

My baseline game is quite good. I can most of the time find a weakness from the BH of the opponent. But a huge problem is my reading of the game when I get a short ball. I'm always starting too late the forward movement, i.e. respect too much my opponents game and don't assume a short ball. Then I also don't have a net game, so I either push the short ball back, and go back to the baseline, or overhit the ball due to being there too late, or rarely when I get to the net, I make error out of even easy volleys.

    I feel you.

    S:
Backhand: 2hbh drive, topspin, Short crosscourt or down the line, I am comfortable on the backhand side. I rebuilt this stroke from a 1hbh because of injury and pain, it was worth it but I still miss my 1hbh.

Forehand volley: I love this stroke and I love hittng it. Very happy with it.

Overhead: Works pretty well so far.

Serve returns: I do this pretty well. Strangely enough even with the Forehand, although it is normally a weakness.

Movement: I don't know where I should put this, so I am putting here because it doesn't really need improvement, although I am not sure I would call it a strength. It's good enough so far.

    Needs improvement:
Forehand: this shot is off and on. I am currently rebuilding it, my takeback was all wrong and I was unable to hit early enough or add lateral weight transfer. Hopefully after this remodel my forehand will at least have good placement, control, and security.

Backhand volley: I get skiddish of this side, something to do with my wrist injury and hesitant footwork, I think it's all related.

1h slice. I don't practice this enough so when I hit it in real points I am too timid with it. I have the feel for it but I have other priorities right now, see below.

    Weakness:
Serve. Oh man is it a wreck. I keep changing things with mixed results. I hate it. The only good serve I have is a ok slice in deuce court, and a medium topspin to the backhand in the add court. I can't decide if switching to a pinpoint serve would help my pace or just screw up my topspin serves and timing. Gotta keep chipping away at it.

Rating: Probably 3.0, never been rated.

I'm probably one of the greatest and most talented falling 4.5 players at the national level. Most people oooh and awe when they watch me play and wonder how I did not win.......'The Wimbledon'.

    Lets see...

    Strengths:
    - Movement
    - Able to place 1st & 2nd serves consistently
    - Return of serve
    - The 'Sampras' forehand (e.g., running cross-court forehand)
    - Refusal to quit

    Weaknesses:
    - Backhand off slow, high bouncing ball
    - Backhand off short, low slice
    - Forehand above shoulder
    - No huge weapon
    - Can struggle with confidence

Effectively, I'm a USTA rated 4.5 version Ferrer...

I would disagree. Your strength and weaknesses are always relative to your basic level.

A 5.5 player with, for instance, a killer serve at his level, is going to have a pretty darn good serve. Nevertheless this player is unlikely to pose a big problem for a top pro.

    Strong 3.5 / Weak 4.0

    Strengths:
    Consistent serve with good placement
    Rarely double fault
    Variety of shots
    Slice backhand that stays low
Serve & Volley / Net game
    Touch & Drop shots
Ability to play different styles depending on opponent

    Weaknesses:
Fitness (get tired midway through match)
Topspin backhand still a work in progress
Sometimes let opponents back into a match (need to close better)
    Sloppy footwork
    Sometimes not aggressive enough

I agree w/ rkelley. There is a 4.0 guy at my club who we always joked was "a backhand away from being a 4.5". He has a real strong serve (stronger than mine, actually) as well as a strong forehand, but almost no backhand. I normally beat him 1 & 1.

Have you tried going the serve/volley? I found when my serve was in a rut my having the S&V mentality I was focusing on serve placement, tossing the ball forward, hitting up at the ball and moving into the court and it dramatically improved my consistency, and less on the dynamics of the complex service motion. Maybe this could help
