Practicing leg drive

    I have been working on my fitness level for awhile because I want to improve my playing level and winter has began here in wisconsin. I have been doing squats, deadlifts, abs.. the whole shu bang. I have also been doing footwork drills and running/sprints on off days. In a match I feel like I can hit an ball with power and accuracy but I have been having noticing other kids at my local tennis center who are using leg drive in their forehands. Does anyone have any tips or exercises to help develop leg drive for the forehand?

    If you just force yourself to bend your knees every shot, and also prepare early, you would automatically employ the legs.
    If you work your legs to death with weights, you tend to stand stiff and locked kneed.
    Playing tennis promotes good habits. Nothing else really works, including racketball and squash, as you don't need nearly the whole kinetic chain to hit those shots.
    Watch lots of tennis on vid and TV, emulate the movement, low center of gravity, and the legwork.

    Usually, but not always. I've seen some players that have a very good knee bend but do not extend the legs until after the ball has left the strings. Others drive with the legs sooner but still do it at the wrong time. Often players will not drive with the legs until the racquet head is already well on its way up (and about to meet the ball). This is still too late.

    The legs should extend as the racquet drops behind the back (actually below the shoulder). The legs extend and then, the racquet arm extends. This is the proper timing of the leg drive. Anything else is a waste of knee bend,

    I've seen tall continental forehand 6-7 level players who don't lift at all with their legs, but instead drive the knees towards the target. Some have bad knees (BobbyLutz), some took the ball low and early, some just favored moving into the court over lifting during the ball strike.
