Strangely there's no thread for the tournaments. Ah well that's what happens I guess when both Federer and Nadal aren't playing in these 2 weeks.

Since there's no particularly strong field in each of the tournaments I decided just to combine all of them together in one thread, include the Hopman Cup if you like. :)

Doha draw (Ferrer is playing in it?)

Watched the Tomic v Haas Hopman Cup singles last night. Tomic came from 6-1 down in the first set tiebreak to win 8-6 and 5 games to 3 down in the final set to win 7-5.

He had a few moments where he wavered but not many and really showed some fighting spirit when the chips were down. He generally played a positive brand of tennis, took the fight to Haas and reaped the rewards.

Enough for this Aussie to applaud his efforts to turn his game around and hopefully it is a sign of things to come.

Brissy's going to be won by the Donald. Hail to the Donald! He's taking inspiration from RGIII winning the NFC East this year.

Maybe they gave him a transfusion of Hewitt's blood before the match?

The other things that makes this match amazing are:

    A) It was against a higher ranked player
    B) He responded to the increasingly noisy crowd when he levelled at 5 all in the final set by waving his arms for them to make more sound in support of him.

He plays Djoko on Wednesday night so hopefully they get a big crowd and Tomic makes a match of it.

Sharapova pulled out of Brisbane due to a shoulder injury. Sexy Steps withdrew as well because of an eye infection and Rusty will now play LL Kunitsyn.

Millman sees off Ito, Istomin steamrolls Klizan and Falla defeats Levine, all in straights.

Goffin dismissed Ebden rather easily, I fancy his chances against Melzer!

what up with Klizan getting whacked??? He had such a good end-of-year run on HC's so I expected anything but a total beatdown.

If the US beats France in the doubles at the Hopman Cup, my mate wins $3000. They lost the first set so you can imagine how he's feeling right now

IIRC he played against Melzer in Valencia? Had a double break up against him in the 1st set but choked and lost in straights. I think if Goffin gets his game properly he could snag a win.

Court broken? What? Pretty bad quality I guess. Ferrer isn't that heavy..

How did Ferrer do that without injuring himself? At least I haven't heard about him being injured.

Brown's got that quick wind-up, but is unable to react to his own serve.

Brown's got a good baseline game, he doesn't need to S&V every single point, sometimes the S&V makes him rush too much and lose rhythm. See? His rallies from the baseline and gains himself a break back.

Ferrer caught a break when the court broke. Excellent match though even if Brown cooled off.

Is anyone watching Lopez - Kubot or am I the only one who is so tennis-deprived that he's watching first rounds of 250s? First set 6-4 to Kubot. The 25 second rule just got enforced with Lopez and he had to play a second serve. He got pretty angry about it, saying that he was bouncing the ball and that it was part of the service motion. But I think the umpire called it because there were already 25 sec. passed before he started bouncing.

I like how they seem to be serious about enforcing this rule. I hope the umpires follow suit when it comes to someone like Nadal or Djokovic taking too much time.

Ah I completely forgot about this. I thought Brown VS Ferrer was at a very fast pace, and I thought that it was because of Brown's playing style and he didn't take much time between points. I noticed Ferrer was much quicker as well.

Yes, I'm just watching this now. It's going to be very interesting to see how consistently they enforce this. I'm glad to see them going for it right from the start.

Edit to add that the announcers aren't too happy with the call...think there should be a shot clock, it won't be enforced consistently, etc.

Novak holds after about a million break point opportunites for Tomic - I'd imagine that's his fight over now and he'll get double bagelled..
