Just out of curiosity, is there any kind of reason/philosophy behind how people position themselves before serving? Like how Sampras would hold the ball up against the strings and tighten up his arm, and how guys like Rafter or Chang would rest the racquet frame below the left wrist and make an "X" with the racquet and his arm, etc etc.? Or is it all just a matter of personal preference/comfort like how baseball players go through their pre-batting rituals?

    Routine

I think those pecularities are just set routines specific to each player. I know I have my own little quirks when setting up for a service delivery....and it does not have an impact or effect on my actual service motion or placement. It's just a habit I've come to include before each serve.
