Recently switched to a pk 5g which is a more closed pattern than I'm used to and was wondering which would be better to help with control on my forehand the thicker topspin string or a thinner 17 guage like prince syn gut with or without duraflex. Also I normally need to string loosely for pocketing to get any control.

I'd go with the syn gut 17. I've found Topspin Plus 16 to be short on durability.

Hmmm... interesting predicament. The 17 guage will open up your string pattern a bit and bite the ball well. But, the 17 will probably be a bit more powerful than the Topspin 16. The Topspin 16 will bite the ball well but only while the ridges hold up. The ridges usually wear off pretty quickly and then you're left with just a normal 16 guage string. I would go with the syn gut 17. You'll get a more predictable feel and response throughout the life of the string. And for me, feel is just as important as spin when it comes to control.
