Whenever your ead instructiosn on how to serve, people use sampras' serve as an example for form...but i was wondering why other pros like Safin take like an extra step. both sampras and safin are big servers, so does that extra step really matter? because im still working on my serve mechanics and that little step helps a lot.

It's all about timing. I used to slide my foot then switched to a planting (knees were hurting fromt sliding). If you are comfortable with sliding your foot then slide your foot since it helps a lot.

That extra little step with your left foot (for righties) can help add momentum to your service, but its all preference. Roddick and Sampras keep their feet planted, whereas Safin and J. Johansson (I think J.J. does it) slide their feet.
