I'm thinking Steffi Graf and I.Lendl.

Graf's ball toss looked like it was more than 20ft. high, as did Lendl's, I'm not sure which is higher.

In any case, it takes tremendous precision and timing to throw the ball in the same place that high and to hit it on the descent. I've tried it myself and wonder how on earth Graf/Lendl's serve toss wasn't a major liability.

For myself, the toss is about 1-2ft higher than the height of the arm plus racket. Anything higher and the ball toss tends to wander around, and just feel "unstable". I agree that a high ball toss is more bad than good.

Canas, Hrbaty, Kucera all have pretty high tosses. I remember at Wimbledon last year, Canas played Todd Martin. Brad Gilbert was very critical of the amount of times they caught their toss(he said it should count as a fault)

Hrbaty has a high ball toss, and so does Kucera.

Kinda sucks to have a high ball toss when playing in windy conditions doesnt it?

A high toss by some players might be justified in order to obtain heavier topspin which leads to harder serves.

As I posted in other threads,
easitennis.com has an interesting analysis which shows that you can provide topspin (i.e. forcing the ball to rotate from 6 to 12 o'clock) by "shearing". Shearing as described by easitennis.com (I guess Ray Brown) is friction that can appear between the ball and the racket when:

    - the racket is inclined backwards from vertical, like a \o, and the ball is falling into it (o is the ball)

    - the racket is inclined forward from vertical, like a /o, and you're jumping into the ball and attacking it into the court

    - the racket is vertical like |o, still you have a high toss and the ball comes down with a lot of relative velocity wrt to the racket (say Graf or Lendl serving)

I hope you got that the various slashes represent the position of the racket from the vertical at time of impact for the serve.

That's pretty funny NBM about Dementieva; she struggles to hit the ball even with her low ball toss. With a toss like Graf's, Dementieva would be framing the ball all over the place, "stadium faults" instead of court faults.

I know some tennis players think a high ball toss looks cool. Maybe so when a player can pull it off, but it's very unlikely at a non-professional level (!)

conversely, kevin curren and roscoe tanner had very low ball tosses and had very big deceptive serves....i cant think of any current pros who have a toss like them and i wonder why

Is it me or does Federer have a fairly high ball toss. It may not be as high as Hrbaty's but it looks fairly high.

Hrbaty...... I could just about justify an afternoon nap in between the initial toss and him hitting the ball with the racket.

He surely must have some problems on a windy day?

Leconte was another - at first glance he appeared to hit it on the way up but when you saw it on slo-mo he hit it at the peak of the trajectory where it was going neither up nor down.

Berdych's was sufficiently high enough to derail his USO2012 semifinal.

Ever? Karlovic. Among normal-sized guys, Lendl and Berdych. Something about Czechs I guess.

Yeah, his ball toss was so high that he sometimes mishit that on the frame!

I think players who drag their foot during service motion tend to toss the ball higher, probably for timing. Graf's ball toss was unbelievably high as well.
