proper way to Lifting free weights

    is there a proper way to lift free weight, something heavy?

    are you supose to tense up (body and arm) and have tight grip on the free weight (dumb bell handle)?

    or

    loosen up and a firm grip on the handle (enough that you won't drop the weight on your foot)?

    or

    something else.

    Straight back, a little extended.

    Don't lift from your back or you will hurt yourself.

    Lift from legs, arms, etc.

    They have video clips of correct lifting techniques. How you lift depends on what you are lifting.

    i am lifting 20-25 lbs dumb bell, either sitting or standing.
    i think they are called biceps curls.

    You can find tips on bicept curls here: http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Biceps/DBCurl.html

    You'll need a firm grip on the dumbells (so you don't drop them on your feet.)

    Go through the full range of motion.

    Keep you elbows close to your body and isolate the motion. Keep the motion of the dumbells under control. Don't rock your body or swing the weights "cheat" and help lift the weights.

    Check out bodybuilding.com they have video clips of proper lifting technique for pretty much any kind of lift. Always go for good form over heavy weight.

    i am a skinny/weak little guy.
    should i alternate between lifting heavy weights and use light weights for toning? one day go heavy, the next go light?
    i don't want to be huge, the goal is to look and feel good, but most of all, be as lean and mena as possible for tennis.

    remember quality of the movement is better than quantity, don't be like one of those macho gung ho guys who likes killing themselves just to lift heavy and you see them really doing bad form or cheating themselves just for the sake of lifting heavy

    good technique and posture is a must.
    doing them slowly is a lot harder as well.

    i hope i will get into a good routine. it suxs to be lazy!!!
