So I notice alot of pros look way older than they actually are. I'm currently watching the Djokovic vs. Ljubicic match on TTC and didn't realize Ljubicic was only 29 years old when he looks about 45 to me. What other players look really old for their age?

Federer looks old for his age. Can't think of anyone else at the moment.

Sun damage makes a lot of tennis players look older, especially men since they don't usually weak make-up to hide it.

Yeah, like superstition said, it's the sun, man, definitely. Ever seen Boris Becker up close? Poor guy with the recessive traits and the heavy sun exposure. If it weren't for the full head of hair and the highlights, he'd look 50 instead of 40.

Mac? Looks 60 even though he's leaner than ever.

Then you look at a guy like Emilio Sanchez or Sergi Bruguera, and they look 35 and 30 max.

Sun, heat, stress, traveling for years...the list goes on. I think most players look a good ten years older than their actual ages. The only ones with baby faces are the juniours and that quickly changes once they hit the pro circuit.

Lindsay Davenport looks like a catcher's mitt. Which is why I LOL'ed when I read she and Tracy Austin were promoting a line of skin care products.

Haha...I always get a kick out of your choice of words. I agree on Davenport - she's my favourite but her advice I can do without. She's how old again?

Sorry Bette, I know he's your honey and he is a very good looking man no doubt, but he doesn't look 31. He was the first player who came to mind when I saw the thread title.

But if he had a Tina Turner wig on, he'd look more like David Spade/Joe Dirt in his late 20s.

Bald (Ljubicic and Davydenko) and grey hair (Martin) = old. But I don't think Federer looks that old. But then a lot depends on which side of 30 you are on.

Hehe, I'm glad to read "get a kick out of" rather than "want to kick you for".

Yeah, she rules, but seriously, the sun exposure has done its work. I know a lot of women in their late 40s who are better-preserved.

Fed def. looks old. He's a year younger than me and he already looks well into his 30s.

Jana Novotna looked like she was 60 when she was in her prime.

Martina Navratolova is like one giant piece of beef jerky with blond hair.

Only the asian pro's manage to look like teenagers. Michael Chang (saw him last year) still looks young.

They do, but they don't wear enough of it, they don't wear it often enough, and I have NEVER seen a pro re-apply between sets.

Plus the a lot sun damage which appears later in life starts a a young age - how many of these pros put on sunblock when they were 14-year-olds and playing for hours in the sun day in and day out?

yeah, that's true. ive only recently started applying sunblock when i play tennis - about two years ago when i was 24. my skin was doing well until i went snowboarding and i only put one application of 30 spf sunblock. i was there for 10 hrs and my skin was peeling like crazy the next day and was so red. i have more wrinkles on my forehead from that one day alone. now im using some neutrogena cream to restore some of what i lost.

I heard that Sun block cream can cause skin problem for heavy sweating athletes. Also, if it gets in the eyes...pain.

I'm a year older than Fed and am pretty sure if you put me and him next to each other, people would think I'm younger. I'd say he looks about 30, which isn't too bad.

Keep in mind that most pros start playing big tournaments when they're incredibly young. The best players are in the public eye when they're 16 or so. How many other jobs can you do for 15 years and be an elder statesman (or woman)?

Earning a living, often for your family as well as yourself, at 18 tends to cause pros to grow up fast, which makes them appear more emotionally mature, which makes them appear more physically mature, especially as most pros are physical specimens anyway.

i hope thats not your excuse for not using sunblock. i primarily use banana boat sunscreen and it does bother my eyes if it gets in and on windy days but most of the time i hardly notice its there. plus, do you really want to look 40 when you're 30?

re: skin problems, sometimes i'll get pimples when i use my neutrogena moisturize but not with the sunblock that i know of. could be just natural.

I'm lucky that I don't have to wear sun cream over here. The sun rarely comes out and if it's out it's only about 18 degrees. In the summer if we're lucky we could see freak temperatures of 25-30 degrees. The advantages of living in Ireland I guess.

I think it's genetics, plus the sun, stress issues. Someone who has heavier features like a Federer for example, the thicker eyebrows and outstanding nose are going to look older to most people's eyes. These are traits associated with age. Brows thickened as you age, nose continues to thicken and grow for many.

While someone like Vliegen, has smaller featuers: nose, mouth, with larger eyes, traits which are associated with most children. Therefore, most will think he looks younger than his age.

Ljubicic to me looks older than his age, but then the pate has more to do with that than actual features, Davydenko as well. Nikolai has a very young face. Imagine him in a "do" with blonde curls, and he will look his age, and no more.

Yeah, snowboarding/skiiing is the worst - I snowboarded (or at least I attempted to  ) for about four hours one day, wearing an SPF 30 sunscreen, and I got burned on a small patch of skin that I missed when I reapplied.

And yeah, even though I started wearing sunscreen on a regular basis around the time I turned 22, that won't change the fact that I used to swim for at least an hour every day and got baked and toasty looking every summer during my early to mid-teen years.

Sunblock, no matter how good it is, has a tendency to get in your eyes when you sweat. Not good for a tennis player.

Law suits, alimony, drug accusations, betting investigations, trying to get up on the rankings, trying to keep up in the rankings, hiring and firing coaches, seeing more and more competition as the years go on, worrying about what you'll do for money when your ATP days are done.

Still, it's not an issue if it's a non-irritating sunscreen with a sweat-resistant formulation. They do exist and there's no excuse to not wear 'em. That and sunglasses.
