Mariano Puerta will come back to the ATP tour on june 2007. The ban, taking place from june 2005, has been reduced 6 years after his appeal.
    Good news for him. :)

Why are you pleased that a player who took drugs TWICE is getting a shorter ban?

because it was proved that he didnt get an advantage from it. and because you get a good player on the tour again. and because a human being could return to do what he loves.
    enough?

When he was first banned I thought that he was saying the medicine was for his asthma? Maybe I got him confused with another? Now he's saying he mixed medicine bottles with his wife:rolleyes: I dont want to say I'm disappointed that it was cut to only 2 years, but I dont like how the ATP initially gave him the 8 year ban and they thought they were all tough when it came to banned substances, then only gave him 1/4 of what he deserved

Guillermo Vilas: "Im glad that they reduced the ban. It had been an excessive one and it was unfair that Mariano ended his career that way. It is an important precedent".

Two years of suspention is enough punishment for anything he could have done. Eigth years is too cruel. Come on Mariano!!

I'm also glad he'll be back, eight years is to long. I wouldn't even ban players for doping, just hefty fines and let the public know he failed a drug test.

Under any fair system, Puerta would be reinstated immediately. As in the case with Canas, the CAS found "no significant fault or negligence" in Puerta's unknowing ingestion of a tiny amount of a banned substance that is used mainly as a supplemental treatment for high blood pressure and priapism, not a cheat's drug at all. It's clear from the CAS opinion that his accidental ingestion of the drug gave him no advantage whatsoever, so the punishment is not for "doping," but for being not as careful as he could be. Is it fair to take away a man's livelihood on this basis? I say no. Meanwhile, people such as some of the posters above talk about "juice" and "drugs in sport is wrong," without really knowing the facts. Zero tolerance is for tyrants, not reasonable people.

The only problem I have with Puerta is that this is the second time he was suspended because of "negligence." Not necessarily fault or an intent to cheat but for being careless. You would have thought he'd have learned his lesson the first time and been more careful. He's either the unluckiest guy in tennis or the most careless.

As for Canas I don't have a problem with him per se but again given all that's been going on with doping and sanctions the last couple of years you'd think he'd have checked to make sure he was being given what he was supposed to, especially since he was in a foreign country. Granted it came from the medical staff and that's not his fault but still you can never be too cautious nowadays.

With all of this it makes me wonder what would have happened to Petr Korda had the various panels and tribunals been as careful and forgiving as they are today.

What was the explanation in this case? That he drank out of a glass that his wife took a medication out of? Who drinks out of a used glass?

Someone who gets up at night, is staying in a hotel and thus doesn't really know where the cups are, and thus just takes whatever's on the table.

Besides, it was his wife´s for crying out loud! not some "used" glass by a unknown guy.
Havent you, superman, drunk from a shared-by-your-mates bottle of water?

I think Puerta gave Nadal more trouble than Federer in the FO final.
I'm glad he'll be back, but I think he is a moron, and he needs to take care of things more carefully now (the words of an angry fan) :)

REDUCED 6 years. Eight years of the original ban - Two years left = Reduction of 6 years.

Yes, you were missing something, the meaning of the sentence.

I'm glad his 8 year suspension was reduced to 2 years. 8 years was just too punitive and excessive. I won't be surprised if he gets busted again.

I dont know what to say hes been caught cheating twice. Why let him back hes probably as drugged up as ever with huge strength etc etc.

But then I felt sorry for himn when I heard his ban was so long it would destroy his career so maybe im glad hes given a 3rd chance.

3rd chance what am I saying thats ridiculous! 3RD what. Oh well sounds crazy " now this is your 3rd chance for abusing drugs, if you do it again!"

The ban should not have been reduced. This just sends a message that you can dope and get away with it. I wouldn't be surprised if Puerta is scoring dope off of that cokehead Maradona. Even if Puerta does somehow have future success, it will always be tarnished.
