An 8.9 quake in Japan, followed by a huge tsunami and aftershocks.

My well wishes to all the TTW members affected in any way by this disaster.

The video of that wall of water going so far inland, taking houses and buildings along with it all the way into the farmland is unfathomable. I've seen it a number of times, it still doesn't look real to me.

Tsunami watch issued for just about every coastline in the Pacific Ocean.

It looks terrible. And the tsunami's still going on.

I just saw a capsized ship laying on the middle of a town avenue. Not a boat. A ship. What a disaster.

    Horrible..Just horrible.

i hope the effects wont cause nuclear plants that Japan has a lot of on the east coast line to have issues.

Midterm and long term i wonder what the seafloor bed has then formed underwater and what if anything has been destroyed and /or created.
If releases of say Methane gas are significant then it could be very harmful !

what does this mean for California ? California has been waiting for another big one that is to come and is expected by many scientists. Is California next to be hit by massive quake ?

"Biggest ever to hit Japan" is unlikely. Biggest ever RECORDED in Japan, but seismic recordings have only existed for a tiny portion of Japan's history.

My prayers are with the people of Japan in these tough times... God have mercy on us.

Geological events repeat themselves, for certain, we just dont know when since the recorded history is practically inexistent geologically speaking.

Those who live around the ring of fire (myself included) should be prepared at least have some supplies always ready and know what to do in an emergency such as an earthquake.

    from security week:

Today's tragic events of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami, as sad as it is, is a dream for scammers and fraudsters around the world. Tragic events are always something scammers use to their advantage, helping them prey on and exploit innocent victims. Scams are already spreading across Facebook, which started in a matter of minutes after the news broke of the earthquake in Japan. As I write this, scammers are hard at work, registering new domains and cranking out templates for their fake donation sites. This will be followed with massive volumes of email spam, Tweets through Twitter, and Facebook posts, as scammers gear up to solicit donations from around the world.

My ohana and I are fine. We are on the coast but at an elevation safe from such destructive waves.

I drove out this morning to go to work and it was astounding.

There are stretches of the road that parallels the beaches literally covered by lava rocks. Some are really huge! Gives you an idea of the power of the waves being able to scrape such heavy objects and move them quite a distance.

Luckily, there have only been reports of property damage but no loss of life.

I did hear a report (unconfirmed) on the radio that a house is floating on one of our bays.

Civil Defense has now downgraded emergency status from Tsunami Warning to Tsunami Advisory but the All Clear hasn't been issued meaning anyone from evacuated inundation areas are still prohibited from returning to their homes.

I hope things get settled later on. I was able to get out but would I be able to get back home?....

Woke up this morning and made feature news. Just watching that aerial shot of the tsunami engulfing the farmlands is surreal. I can only imagine how fast it must be on the ground. Death toll is now at least 1000 people and 350 people missing.

This is pretty bad, my heart and well wishes go out to the Japanese people.

    heard on news radio that
-US military is helping supply some coolant to the nuclear reactor
-2 to 3 ft tsunami waves hitting the california/oregon boarder and also some ports/harbors in santa cruz.
-many ports/harbors have sent their larger ships out to sea and the smaller vessels have been doubled in tie downs.
-a navy ship based out of seal beach/long beach has been sent out fr port as well.

it's not that i enjoy it...but wow...how these type of disastrous events can keep one tuned in to the radio/tv.

prayers and thoughts to those affected by this natural disaster.

^^ okaay, but what exactly is the impact of this fallout if i may ask a silly question.

I assume this is radiation, like what happened at Hiroshima etc which will spread, right ? Will it then blow over the US and dissipate shortly or get into the soil and water.

On a side note, Do i recall once long back people were buying some tablets to consume which would prevent them from absorbing radiation, it turned out to be a hoax?

Tell me again how nuclear power is a good thing? Especially in active earthquake zones? And the waste that never, ever goes away.

Anyway, don't want this to get into rant/rave territory, so I will just say that there are now reports of more than 9000 people missing in one of the northern prefectures and that is beyond tragic.

I am sure they are affected too. Production may have to be shut down. Electrity is being shut down and will only be available periodically. On Needed bases only.

Japanese government dropping the ball. First priority is to protect Yonex factory. Move it brick aby brick to a safe location in southern japan. this is an absolute first priority. Why are they not doing this? People can be replaced, a radioactive Yonex racket is a trajedy.

Why isn't CNN or Fox covering this?

I hear some reports are saying it could be rated as high as a 9.1 quake. That's pretty rough stuff.

How can you make light of this situation ? just so that you know, so far 100,000's could be dead.
