When did it really begin in the media? At end of 2004 or 2005 US Open? I remember after 2005 US Open everyone all the tennis greats like JMac/Connors started talking that Fed could break Sampras' slam record.

Even when Federer was playing in his first Wimbledon final JMac was talking about him breaking the slam record.

Yeah but Federer himself didn't even mention the "monster" until late 2007. I think he knew about it by late 2005, but he didn't really feel the pressure as long Rafa wasn't a threat off clay. But you could sense it at 2007 Wimby when Roger said "I'm glad to win as many slams as I can right now before Rafa wins them all". He knew right then that his AO + Wimbledon + US Open was under assault and the pressure was fully ON at that point. I think he's been playing worse and worse tennis ever since until the FO final.
