Just wanted to ask these boards before I decide to go and email Julie Wrege for an answer.

Realizing that there will be another star update in the spring, does anyone know or have an idea which month it will be? Also knowing that they used a period of time and taking the player's highest ranking within this period of time to use for updating stars, when will the period be for the spring update? I think it was like between June and September your highest ranking achieved will be used to see what star you are for the fall update.

I unfortunately missed the cutoff at 401 when they used the June-September 1st dates as I made inside the threshold I believe the week after. However, I am going up and I'm well inside the current 3 star threshold and hopefully will only increase my recruiting rank.

    Anyone have any answers?
    Regards

    I can take this one...

We have not finalized things yet, but our current plans are to release our new ratings in the early Spring - most likely the early half of March. The rating period will most likely be a 2-month period before the ratings come out - so probably the January-March timeframe.

You can read about our Top Prospect Ratings here:

    http://tennisrecruiting.net/about/TopProspects.asp

Once we come up with the actual dates for the rating period and the spring release of Top Prospects, we will post the information on the website and include it in our monthly newsletter. If you have a free account at TRN, you will receive our newsletter with that information.

I hope these rough dates help. Let me know if you have more questions.

    Best regards,
    Dallas

My kid is too young but how important is this rating to a college coach? How many kids fall through the cracks?

My son, whom in his first year of college, had coaches looking at his profile on a constant basis from about 9th grade on. He was usually between 75-125, 3 star and found TRN the most useful place for a tennis player looking to play in college.

What we found most important, was that he was able to view what coaches were looking at him and then make contact if he had not previously. This opened up his options for recruitment and allowed him more personal contact with a coach, indicating that his profiled had been reviewed when contacting a coach for the first time or for a follow up conversation.

If a coach is watching, they could be interested and it is important to reach out if they do not contact you.

    I hope this helps...

You could be asking any one of a number of questions here. Let me try a couple of answers...

    How important is the rating?

TRN provides weekly rankings of kids by graduation year. These rankings use a head-to-head ranking system that we feel is the most accurate system available for comparing two players head-to-head.

TRN also publishes Top Prospect Ratings (i.e., the "Stars") twice a year. You can think of these as a much more coarse, much more infrequent ranking of players.

The weekly rankings are much more important to coaches as a starting point for their recruiting. The semiannual ratings are more for the press and for "buzz". (For example, a school press release might refer to an incoming player as "John Doe, a 4-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net").

So... to answer your question, we don't think players or coaches should focus on the rating - and we know for a fact that many coaches use the rankings.

That said, these rankings/ratings are only used as a starting point for colleges in recruiting... rankings are only so useful.

How many kids fall through the cracks?

I don't know what you are asking for here. How many kids that could play college tennis do not get recruited? How many kids who should have a rating do not have one?

At the end of the day, it is up to the student-athlete to contact colleges and coaches where he/she is interested in playing. It is true that TRN can help with making initial connections, but the student needs to be in the driver's seat.

    I hope this helps.
