when you break a string, do you break mains or crosses first? Also, what string do you use and do you hybrid your strings or string them straight up?

    I'll go first:

I always break mains. I play babolat xcel premium 16 gauge.

I think that everyone breaks mains unless they are using a hybrid setup. Those strings should have more stress put on them.

90% of the time it's a main. I've used a couple multifilaments that would fray a cross now and then.

Crosses always, I use gut in the crosses and poly in the mains. I'm considering changing though - I tried an all-synthetic setup recently because I got some string for free and it felt great. It was also way cheaper! We'll see how long it lasts though.

I used to always break the mains when I was stringing a straight synthetic throughout. Now that I use poly for the mains I always cut them out before I break them... usually every 8-10 sets or so.

I started the thread and I made a mistake in my original post. I played a new string recently that I didn't really like but broke a main last night. However, when I play with the babolat xcel I always break a cross, not a main. I see a few others have had this issue with a multi so I am glad to know it is not just me.

Poly mains, syn gut crosses...always break mains although it's much less often than before I went the poly route.

The main string is the part that breaks. I use a 16 gauge nylon. I base my pick on color, I like florescent green. My wife uses a racquet like mine, so I put yellow string in hers, so our racquets have different colors. I like thin string. Other than that, I don't think much about it.

Almost always the mains. Back when I used poly in the mains, my synthetic crosses would sometimes break first.

I always break mains first, but I don't understand why folks who use poly break strings at all, since they go dead way, way before they break.
