The player .. which I wont name.. has a USTA rating of 5.5 . He has won national tournaments at the 30 and 35 age group, played pro for a little bit and was on the cover of Tennis Magazine.

And most importantly, beaten Sup once. That surely counts for something. *crickets chirp*

Nice guy.. huge.. hands like a banana bunch and forearms bigger than my legs.

Yes, he may be a computer rated 5.5, but by definition he is really just below a 7.0. Truth is, I don't think the USTA gives ratings above 5.5, because guys that would be above 5.5 are playing futures/challengers.

By the way, Sup, he never aced you!!

I should post the phot of all of us standing next to him, to show how big he is. LOL

By the way, forgot to mention to you. I may be hitting with him later this week, along with another guy that lives in the club who is a teaching pro. They are good buddies, and he has invitied to me to join them for a "work out". LOL

    6.0 to 7.0
These players will generally not need NTRP ratings. Rankings or past rankings will speak for themselves. The 6.0 player typically has had intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior level and collegiate levels and has obtained a sectional and/or national ranking. The 6.5 player has a reasonable chance of succeeding at the 7.0 level and has extensive satellite tournament experience. The 7.0 is a world class player who is committed to tournament competition on the international level and whose major source of income is tournament prize winnings.

Here is another video from the same match:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q7rTBDEuJ4

By the way, I believe Lake won this match 6-1, 6-0, and he was "being nice". The guy he played against is a 5.0??? Sup, could you confirm that???

actually it was 6-0, 6-2 I think. Unless we are talking about another match.

The player he played is a 4.5 -5.0. But since he won 2 national tournament matches.. i say 5.0 for sure.

I'm ready to book anytime. In fact, I'm resisting the urge to do it right now after the night I just had. Instead, I will take up all the slack from Jolly and Moz, and drink lots of wine.

I am reachable through the email link in my profile. We are still looking at first weekend, right? I already asked for the days off from work.

He is definitely not a 6.5 by this definition. At present, this guy has absolutely zero chance of success at the 7.0 level.

    Here you go:

6.0 This player will generally not need NTRP ratings. Rankings or past
rankings will speak for themselves. The 6.0 player typically has had
intensive training for national tournament competition at the junior
level and collegiate levels and has obtained a sectional and or
    national ranking

    This player:
can and has played some satellite events
can be a good competing teaching head pro
    prepares right on time

6.5 This player has a reasonable chance of succeeding at the professional
7.0 level and has a reasonable satellite tournament experience.

    This player:
has won on the satellite tour
can compete with world class players
prepares and sets up a minute early
    Top of page

7.0 This player is a world class player who is committed to tournament
competition on the international level and whose major source of
    income is tournament prize winnings

My man Wayne "the Train" Odesnik handed him a pretty one sided loss last year...not sure how that might speak to the rating.

Odesnik, oddly enough, was the player that came to mind when I watched Montevassi.

I hate to be someone who wants to downrate anyone, but he looks ok to me, maybe ok he is a 5.0 or 5.5 at best but my first look was like 4.0 to 4.5.

But it is hard to tell. From the camera shots we are looking at I got to give this honest response.

Look at his movement and footwork. He moves pretty
efficiently and quickly. He runs after a wide forehand and
then gets back to the court really quickly and is in perfect
position to hit an approach shot.

he looks athletic, but anyone rating him higher than 5.5 doesn't know advanced technique. he gets minimal extension and wrist snap on his serve. his swing-speed is relatively low and he is playing a guy who looks like a 4.0-4.5 pusher. he would need a great draw to win a round in an open tourney in socal.

sorry i didn't read the 3rd page after the first one was full of metaphorical handjobs and drakulie's typical blabbing about 4.5s who are 1 step below federer. i said 5.0 anyways and doubt the guy ever quallied for a futures or even dented the opens while he "played pro."

I would have rated him a 4.5 based on the video provided. Perhaps it is not a fair representation of his abilities but it does look very comparable to 4.5 players in my area. I was extremely surprised to learn the real rating etc. I hit with a kid that finished 3rd at our states HS tournament last year and went to a small school on a tennis scholarship that hits much better and with considerable more pace than these videos show.

When did I ever rate a 4.5 below Federer? In fact, I state the opposite time after time on this forum. Judging from this post, and the one below>>> it is obvious you don't know squat. "Minimal Extension"?? "Wrist snap"?? "open tourney in socal??" LOL

he looks athletic, but anyone rating him higher than 5.5 doesn't know advanced technique. he gets minimal extension and wrist snap on his serve. his swing-speed is relatively low and he is playing a guy who looks like a 4.0-4.5 pusher. he would need a great draw to win a round in an open tourney in socal.

I remember that article. Didn't the article say that the player had not started playing tennis until after college, but was a really, really good athlete (semi-pro soccer/ scholarship player)?

By the way, he is currently the 2nd ranked american in the ITF over 35's.

His modelling skills from the magazine and video look more impressive than his tennis but it could be because the video really didn't show him playing that great, so to speak, it might have not done him justice.

He might be both a good model and tennis player but the video doesn't do him enough justice for the tennis playing.

If you go to you tube you can find a lot of players playing a lot faster and precise shots without some of the vanity from those videos.

But with no disrespect to the guy, he wasn't bad at all as a tennis player either.

I was thrilled to be rated 3.5 given that Pistol Pete was rated 4.0.

And figure Tony Larson first posted his creds showing that he was a legit 6.0 before posting a video, and was still rated anywhere from 3.5-5.0

the better guy in the new video looks better, the weaker player about the same. it's tough to see how big all these guys hit (serves look 5.0, groundies 5.5).... the better player in the new video seems to wear down as the match goes on, so maybe the OP's guy would outlast him. any other mythical beasts to compare?

When I saw that serve motion and cap I thought it might be Vince Spadea? He ain't afraid-a-ya.

But then I saw the 1HBH so it can't be him...

I siad 4.5 based on the minimal footy available.

He seems comfortable and has some nice form. Seems make contact a bit eralier than he should looking at his arm extension on one particular forehand.

The ball on the serve seems to go a little too far into the court; not much.

His grounstrokes have a nice pace, but they don't seem to carry much weight.

    I'd say a low 4.5 at that ?

MY simple comment is that the guy has no bad looking shots and did not miss any shots during the entire video. Any mistake was punished by an instant winner.

5.0 serves? Did you see the serve at 2:45? I think you will find many of those you see from the side are seconds.

The one at 2:45 was definitely a 1st serve. Ha ha ha.
Yes, there were a bunch of 2nd serves as well in the mix.
Don't remember which ones were 2nd's.

After some more guesses I'll reveal their level.

It is really hard to tell with these clips. I would rate the person around a 4.0 maybe a little higher.

    What I didnt like was:

    1. His serve was a bit casual for me, especially in the setup

    2. His footwork on the forehand warmup was horrible. At the 5.0 level split-steps, step-outs, shuffles, gravity steps should be noticable, even when you are warming up.

    3. Couldnt really see his volleys.

    4. His backhand in warmup did not have good form and was a bit cramped by his lack of footwork.

He is athletic and coordinated so I am sure a lot of this stuff can be improved upon quickly.
