Reading the ball

    Yesterday was the first time someone had actually taught me about loading up and getting that first preparation step with the racquet and my back leg (forehand) being the same motion...and i'm having some trouble.

    During the lesson, i was able to do it correctly on my forehand because i was being fed to the forehand, and i was alright on the backhand...once again because i knew it was coming.

    Now i know you're supposed to do the same preparation for forehand+backhand...but i find that sometimes i "guess" wrong and i'm caught off-balance because i'm preparing for the wrong side.




    How have you guys gotten around this? I'm assuming it's just experience, but anything else you have to say would be greatly appreciated.

    This is why I keep my racquet out in front and my feet moving. It helps you get in to position better to hit both a forehand, or a backhand.

    Check Federer in slow-motion, he's the most advanced in this respect:

    before the opponent hits, he makes several (2-3) low bounces on his toes; this energizes him in preparation for the real split-step and keeps him non-committed (this step isn't always performed); it also keeps him in a active state while the opponent goes through the motions towards contact

    just before the opponent hits, he makes the highest bounce, which is the SPLIT STEP

    while in the air, he observes the ball in motion coming from the opponent's racquet

    at that time, and not earlier, he makes the decision on which leg to put more of a weight when landing; that is the side towards which he will be moving

    thus, don't trigger until you see the whiff of the ball coming:)

    Thanks marius, you're one of the best people around here who provide an honest opinion, without flaming anyone.


    I've noticed gasquet does a similar preparation, though his is much more exaggerated? Why is it so pronounced?

    I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand this. Why would he put more weight on the side he will be moving towards? How would this help him move? Sorry, I'm just curious and slightly confused...

    Federer sees the ball pretty early, so he does this really soon. From what i learned, you put more weight on the side you are going to (back leg for forehand, and front leg for backhand) because you want to get your weight into the shot.

    10-15lbs of weight from your arm...as opposed to the 100+lbs that a person probably weighs. That's more power in my book.

    Think sprinting, a standing start. You must transfer your weight to the leg which steps forward the first, thus you must flex its knee in order for the quads to receive the load.

    Same thing here. Should you move to the right, you must load first your right leg and transfer your weight towards it.
