To annoy Maverick66 and amuse you guys. That's why I provided the handy link for you all in post #46. (See above).

Huh??... Like I said, I provided you guys the link showing me using the word 'gay' in another thread. It's not exactly Scotland Yard level detective work here, CC...

Yes, I know that-I copied YOUR link to your post. But, if you agree that use of the word is overused, stupid and offensive, then why even use it as a "joke"? I guess I can't reconcile in my head the obvious hypocrisy there. But then again, you HAVE been somewhat obsessed with gay themes lately, which is often an indication of repressed or latent homosexuality. Not that there's anything wrong with that...but what do I know...Probably, for most people here over 14 years old, the "joke" is getting old and is fast becoming merely annoying (including my Topgun crack to Maverick66...) or maybe even offensive to some people...

My suggestion is that we drop it.

MY hypocrisy and obsession with gay themes? But you're the one who introduced the 'Top Gun is gay' subject into THIS thread for no apparent reason.

Not that there's anything wrong with THAT.

Yes, to annoy Maverick66-which I mentioned in my previous post, in case you missed that-and you took my cue and did the same in ANOTHER post...

So my suggestion, regardless of who said and did what, is that the "gay" theme be dropped. Just a suggestion, of course. But if you think you can squeeze another "joke" out of it, then by all means-who am I to stifle such creativity.

Not that there's anything wrong with annoying Maverick66 in mulitple threads.

I may be able to squeeze another joke out of it. I don't know yet. Let me noodle around with the the raw materials at hand -- Maverick66, Top Gun, Navy as gay branch of military, Phil as Navy guy, Maverick66 as name of gay character in Top Gun, Maverick66 as enemy of Phil, etc. -- and see what I can come up with.

Hey, by the way, where was your righteous voice during the great "I'm tired of seeing Serena's fat African American ass on TV" controversy? I was smacking around those guys and their racist posts in that pitched battle, but your entire contribution to that thread was that you preferred Serena's ass to Sharapova's or something to that effect. Why did you shy away from involvment in that legendary brawl?

And while we're at it, Maria's ass looked fantastic at the AO in that hot little dress she had on....

No, not at all, but sometimes you've got to pack it in for the good of the nation, as fun as annoying him can be.

I wasn't aware of my importance here, or the rule that I'm required to post in every single TW thread. Truth is, I came to that thread late, and saw that you were doing just fine on your own-for once you didn't need me to bail you out. I've been on the same side in plenty of very SIMILAR Williams sisters threads-well before you came on board here...but it's nice that you took an actual, legitimate stand on something.

I wasn't aware that she had an ass. I saw her play (albeit briefly) last Saturday at the Toray Pan Pacific semis. I was, in fact, sitting BEHIND her, about 8 rows up, for most of that time. So I'm pretty familiar with this subject. Her opponent was better looking-Ivanovic (and not much shorter, either).

Yes, because he's certainly not MY enemy. No one here is. Punching bag, maybe...but I'm a bit wary now...these anal lightening bolts that he speaks of...I think I may have keep my distance from "Mav", if I know what's good for me!

You are. I suggest you reaquaint yourelf with the Talk Tennis User's Manual, section 12, paragraph 4. Aside from that, you generally aren't the shy sort, so I was amazed you kept your mouth shut on a particularly fiery topic.

I only did so because I thought you'd bail me out like you have so many times before...

I take it you are implying, and in a negative way, that I don't take actual legitimate stands around here. I think my history reflects I take many legitimate stands -- but those stands are mostly on topics directly or indirectly related to tennis, or topics that spring forth from initial discussions related to tennis. You're not often going to find me spouting off in threads like "Bush is wasting our tax dollars!" because I can argue about that stuff if I wanted to with people in the real world instead of with a bunch of internet strangers. But where else but here can I have a vicious fight with someone over the relative importance of swingweight?

Are you out of your mind?? I've only seen Maria from afar in person, and certainly can't speak for how she looked from row 8 at the Toray Pan Pacific Semis, but on TV at the Australian Open her ass looked FANTASTIC, better than ever. And this is coming from a guy who likes a girl with some meat on her bones. It appears she's gained a couple of pounds right in the sweetspot or something (see? I only talk about tennis here) and she was looking swell.

Here is the best shot I could dig up on short notice, but it should give you an idea that her ass would hardly have been mistaken for Karen Carpenter's Down Under:

    http://www.foxnews.com/photoessay/photoessay_1387_images/0127070207_M_sharapova_swing1_012607.jpg

Unbelievably, I've never really seen Ivanovic on TV (or in person.) But judging from the photographs, she looks pretty damn good herself. That's a hell of a hottie match you got to see there...

I didn't imply that you don't take actual, legit stands here. I SAID that you did so, and that's good. A neutral statement, but if you want to use it to create friction, be my guest. So you actually said something...you participated on the "right" side of a divisive issue...it's your first real discussion outside of the TE posts, and you should feel proud. Pat yourself on the back. I've been in several such discussions, so don't think that I skipped this one for any other reason than I really didn't have much to add to it-and I came into it late. As I said, you more than held your own in cyber biatch slapping that idiot. Were you WAITING for me to pile on? It wasn't necessary. But now that I know that you're really counting on me to back you up, I'm the 3rd Reserve Cavalry-here to turn the tide of battle, whenever and wherever it may be.

Most of the people I know HERE-excluding friends and family in New York- don't like to discuss such issues-especially since "disagreement" creates discomfort. So there's something to be said, at least for me, with discussing real world issues, even if it is with "Internet strangers". Most of my tennis acquaintances, like you, would prefer to discuss swing weight and mention of race, gender or anything remotely controversial will send them running for the hills.

Getting back to tennis and Sharapova's derrier...in the looks department I think she's, without a doubt, the most overrated and overhyped player on the tour. She is the "it" girl of the moment. I'm a firm believer that just about anything will look good if you put enough make-up on it and hang tight clothes on it. I don't think much of the behind either, but being a begger, I wouldn't be so choosey-if she ever asked me, I'd accompany her to a love hotel in a split second. But she won't, so I won't have to deal with her squealing!

Now, stop being so annoying...you'd argue with an oak tree if you knew that it would get fed up with you and walk away.

Exactly, Phil. It follows a similar path of semantic/etymological change as the word <lame>:

neutral descriptor of person > negative stigmatized descriptor of person > generally negative descriptor of anything

It's an interesting question about our English language culture whether or not these processes indicate cross-generational bias against disability and "marginal" sexualities. There's also a really cool study of the process of women's names becoming words for effeminate/gay men (nancy-boy, sissy, etc.)

But, yeah, my students who use "gay" as "uncool" rarely realize an etymological connection.

I guess this was another "neutral statement" too...

What was interesting to me about the Serena controversy is not that you didn't participate in the thread. It was that you actually took the trouble to contribute to the discussion, but entirely passed on the hot button issue being discussed in favor of some benign comment about your preferences in women. It wasn't that I was needing you to rescue me like you have so many, many times before. For all I know, you may have taken the other guys side in that debate. What was odd to me was that you opened your mouth but had nothing much to say when you seldom seem at a loss for opinions at other times. (Your lack of participation in that debate seemed even more strange when I read a post of yours recently where you said you call people on their racism and sexism, etc., when you see it.)

But I accept your explanation that you came to the thread late, and that you have had that fight many times before in other threads, and that you were tired of bailing me out of messes I've gotten into, and wanted me to stand on my own two feet for once instead of reyling on old Phil to come in and save the day for me once again, and all that. Where would I be without you?;)

Well, life sure is different here. I can't even get my tennis friends to discuss racket head size because they'd rather discuss race, gender, and Iraq or whatever. Here's a sample conversation in my world:

HEYCAL: Gee, Bill, you're a 5.0 who's been playing tennis your whole life. What kind of racket do you use and why?

BILL: I'm not sure. I think it might be a Wilson or something? And when you say 'head size' do you mean the round part where you hit the ball? If so, I didn't realize they came in different sizes -- hey, do you think that guy working the front desk for minimum wage resents that white upper middle class guys like us monopolize these outer borough courts while most of the people he knows couldn't afford even a single lesson? Should we even be allowed to play here?

If you don't think Sharapova is hot than you are gayer than Top Gun.

Sure, she might not be your type, but she is a damn fine looking girl, and her ass -- as evidenced by the photo in the link above -- is looking great.

Now, is she overhyped? Sure. Is she the most attractive girl on the tour? Probably not. Is she still twice as hot as the average woman, and twice as hot as tennis girls of yesteyear? Yes. In my day, Chris Everett was the hottest thing going on the court and there weren't too many others who even looked like women, and Sharapova and the rest of the girls today are -- like the equipment they use -- vastly superior to Everett and the rest of them back then.

Heycal, he's not going to reveal for obvious reasons, but I'm sure you do know who it is. Even I know who it is and I'm new here. Perhaps Phil was simply showing respect to the ladies on the forum by not discussing in detail his every fantasy regarding every female tennis player on the tour. I do believe you need to get rid of Bill - does he read the senatorial debates for fun? lol.

    Who is it?

I'm not sure what your point is here, or what prompted it, but Phil seemed pretty detailed in describing how he would take Sharapova to a "love motel" and what role her shrieking might play. And this is about a woman he doesn't even find attractive....

Bill is a composite figure meant to illustrate a point. Nonetheless, Bill thinks Sharapova is pretty hot too.

Sharapova is more than a breathing female. She is a lanky, pretty, fit, young gal who has developed a fabulous caboose as of late. We're not talking Petrova here... (For the record, Ole Heycal has no particular thing for Sharapova, and thinks there are a few other gals equally or more attractive than her on the tour.)

Dude-While she has SOME butt, that's a poor photographic representation. I know Serena Williams (in a photographic sense), and Maria S. is no Serena. She's reaching for a shot, arching her back (purrrrrrr) and the effort and position of her body has caused her to stick out her booty...you need to capture the object in question from a different angle-like directly behind her. Damn, I wish I had brought my camera to the match on Saturday...

Sharapova is a very poor substitute for Anna K...what a face! What a...oh, never mind. Believe me, no one other than heycal considers Maria "callipygian" (apologies to Dedans P.).

Did you just call Phil gay?

    Oh no you di'n't!

(Well, I guess heycal did upthread as well. I never knew finding Sharapova totally unappealinguninteristing meant you were gay. FINALLY someone has a clear criterion for defining sexual identities. Someone better call Kinsey and Superstition and tell them you got this figured out more concretely.)

I made an observation that her be-hind looked terrific at the AO. When people said she had no ass at all, I produced photographic evidence from the aforementioned AO showing her butt looking mighty fine. And now you want to criticize the picture as being unrepresentative of the fabulousness of her ass at the AO because she was stretching for a shot in the picture? I do and do and do for you people and it's never enough...

I agree that Maria is definitely no Serena -- Maria is about five times more attractive, AND has a better ass. (Ever heard of too much of a good thing?)

She is not average looking in the least. I agree that she is not as attractive as top models or movie stars, but compared to 98 percent of female athletes and the female population at large, she's definitely a hottie. If a girl who looked like she did walked into your neighborhood bar you'd splooge in your drink.

Anna K is a bit hotter, yes. (Though even she is not as hot as the top models/movie stars.) However, Anna K's attractiveness doesn't mean that Maria's ass ain't looking fab these days and that's she an attractive girl in general.

    Well, now you do.

As somewhat of an authority in the callipygian arts, I have to say that photo was unrepresentative, and if anything, distorted MS's derriere beyond its actual, somewhat diminuative proportions.

MS is maybe .85 times more attractive, facially, but below the neck, she falls BEHIND Serena by a margin of 3 to 1. I've HEARD of "too much of a good thing", but I certainly don't subscribe to such a theory-I believe it to be the sorry refrain of a jealous man who has simply never tasted the fruits of "too much".

Listen, I'm better looking than 98% of professional female athletes-that's not much to write home about. I see at least two dozen women on the streets of Tokyo every day who would put MS to shame. She's ONLY a hottie because, compared to those 98% who don't even compare to ME, she's an absolute goddess. Everythings relative, bubba.

Fact is, the WTA only has a few "hot" women it can promote, so it makes the most of it...and if it succeeds in making adolescent males (and you) froth at the mouth, all the better...but the more discriminating of us KNOW who the real class of the bunch is. Not sayin' MS is NOT attractive, but she's no big deal. Did I mention that if, perchance, she DID invite me to a "Ruvu Hote-ru", I'd probably follow her like a slobbering dog...but that just isn't gonna happen until she's back in Tokyo next February.

shes is average looking. come to south florida and see the women here. i could find a million better looking women. she is tall and rail thin. this is attractive. no curves is not attractive at all. she has a flat butt get over it. maybe thats what you enjoy but for me i want some curve. and if she came into the bar here i would just notice how tall she is and go after the better looking girl.

Yeah, I did get a bit lucky stumbling upon that photo, huh?;) But it really did help support the observation I had previously made, the Maria's tush at the AO was looking fab. True, it's "somewhat diminutive", but it's shaped extremely well lately, and this is analgous to the fact that finely shaped "B" cup breasts can often look better than "C" or "D" cups. It's not enough to have the meat; it must be shaped nicely too.

Before I address this remark, let me reiterate that I definitely prefer a girl with curves and some flesh. My ideal body type is not Twiggy or Calista Flockhart or some emaciated model; it's more Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Ann Margaret(!), Jennifer Lopez (before she got overly fit), Kate Winslet from 'Titanic' days, vintage Jennifer Connolly before she discoverd the gym and anorexia, and so on. I HATE the way the fashion industry -- which is run by women and Top Gun watching homosexuals -- promotes thinness as the beauty ideal when it's both less attractive and causes young girls and women image problems. I've been railing about this for years.

All that being sad... Serena is thick and fat, and her body is not looking very good these days.

    Next case!

Yes. And you probably see hundreds more who couldn't hold Maria's bra strap. Same in New York. Our eyes pass so quickly over the teeming masses of humanity that these ordinary women don't even register while we zero in the much smaller pool of hotties and suddenly we begin to think ALL the women in Tokyo or New York or South Florida are hot. Fact is, Maria Sharapova is more attractive than 98% of the female population at large, anywhere, and if I have to fly to Tokyo to sit at an outdoor cafe with you to watch women streaming by us while counting the number of pretty and not-so pretty ones and asking you over and over as each one passes "who would you rather take to a Ruvu hote-ru, her or Sharapova?" until you finally get it, so help me God I will. Don't push me, Phil!!!

We should hit the town together sometime then, Maverick66. If these two women walk into the bar, I'll take the one with the "flat butt":

    http://www.foxnews.com/photoessay/photoessay_1387_images/0127070207_M_sharapova_swing1_012607.jpg

And you can have the "curvy" one:

You are obviously not versed in the callipygian arts, as I am. You may also need to brush-up on your photo interpretative skills.

Yes, very true, and I agree with your choices of "classic" beauties. When and why did models go from having hourglass figures to being built like 12 year-old boys? Maybe THAT'S the influence of the Top Gun-watching homosexual cabal at work...

That she is "thick" is not her fault-that's down to genetics. She is overweight now, somewhat, but that was discussed ad nauseum in another thread (which, btw, I came in on to chastize the racists-I didn't notice your name in that thread, Mr. I-too-made-a-stand...look at me!).

Does she even wear a bra? I don't think she needs to, yet.
Nope, my eyes focus just fine, on the hotties and the plain Janes alike-like a high-speed main frame computer, I'm constantly making "calculations". Speak for yourself.

No one in his right mind thinks ALL the women of such places are hot. You're exactly the Joe Sixpack that the WTA marketing gurus are catering to-despite the fact that MS is still built like a boy, she IS tall, she IS blonde and decent looking. Put make-up and a dress on er and voila...you've just recruited to the cause 1,000's of adolescent boys and adult men who don't know any better...

in addition to millions of women in Tokyo that would put MS to shame, add Babs Schett, Ivanovic and a number of other WTA players...she isn't even the most gorgeous player in her own league.

You're always welcome here...and I know just the cafe from which we can reconnoiter the streaming hordes of female passers by. Sad thing is, I've actually DONE that before...like the overgrown adolescent that I am...

I truly believe it is indeed the influence of the Top Gun-loving gay mafia at work -- seriously -- and working in conjunction with insecure women who don't recognize what's truly sexy.

Like I care who's "fault" it is that her thighs are thicker than tree trunks? Were making evaluations of beauty here, not excuses. Plus, it ain't all genetics -- it's lack of fitness. As for this other thread that contained some racist remarks that you mentioned, I didn't enter it because I wasn't aware of it. This is different from you entering a heated discussion of racism only to remark upon the weather in Melbourne or whatever it was you posted.

Don't know. Sometimes these girls with perky young breasts don't need to.

MILLIONS of women in Tokyo would put her to shame? You wish you lived in such a place... I'm telling you that Maria is more attractive than 98% of the general female population, and I've yet to hear an honest, believable rebuttal to this. I'm sure she would rank pretty high in your "calculations" if you weren't grading on a curve against her to to buttress your position in a debate. (I want bonus points here for using both "rebuttal" and "buttress" in the same paragraph.) There's a REASON you would follow her back to your local Ruvu hote-ru like a slobbering dog, Phil, and it ain't just cause you're hard up.

As for the some of the other girls on the tour being hotter than her, I already acknowleded that I agreed with this in a previous post. Lots of pretty girls on the tour these days (Ashley Harkleroad among them, for example.) Yet Maria is still better looking than the vast majority of her breathen, and I think the main reason Maria gets so much hype and attention is that she is the most attractive of the BEST players, and may well be the finest lookind Grand Slam winner playing today -- and among the most attractive GS winners in the entire history of the game. That's right, EVER. (Hingis is pretty cute, though, and has a great ass. But the other active Slam winners like the Williams sisters, Henin, Mauresmo, Kuznetova, Davenport, Myskina, and Clisters aren't exactly pin-up girls...)

What's sad about it? I do this in New York during the summer months roughly once a week...

    No.

I think you jumped the gun there, kid -- Phil didn't exactly "kill me" in his last post; I just hadn't had a chance to respond yet and bring him (and you) crashing back down to earth.

As for me seeing something the rest of you don't see in recognizing Sharapova's attractiveness? Well, that's just silly. Part of the reason she is so famous is because millions of people recognize her good looks and agree with me. I'm hardly alone in finding her attractive. Hell, if I were, I'd be dating her right now... ("You're a dog, Maria, and I'm the only guy in the world who can bear to even look at you!")

Wow - I can't believe you guys are still debating this topic......actually, sadly I can.

Heycal: I think you're great and I have nothing negative to say to you, but why are you pushing Phil so hard to agree with you? He has made it very clear what he is attracted to and what he is not attracted to. Everyone has their own personal tastes in what triggers them in the opposite sex. I personally, think MS is too fox-like in appearance. She has beady little eyes, thin lips and it appears she's either losing her hair or else it is very thin. In comparison with what is on the tour, yes, she is indeed attractive (I can appreciate her height, but she lacks curves of any sort which make her appear very teenage boyish), but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say she is in the top 2 percentile of females on the planet look-wise.

Mav: I don't believe the Top Gun reference is ever going to be dropped - don't let it bother you.

Phil: I really have nothin' for you. You are entitled to your opinions on females you find attractive and never offend me with your words - a gentleman through-and-through. I do hope you are choosey in your selections of motel partners though, and that not any port in a storm you would settle with. I think of you as having high taste when it comes to that sort of thing.

STILL debating it? I thought we were just warming up.;)

    Well said.

I'm not pushing Phil to say he prefers Maria to Serena or anything like that, just to acknowledge that Maria is a very attractive girl in the grand scheme of things. I think when you folks say Maria is not in the top 2% of the female population in terms of looks you must be comparing her to other women in your imagination or in the media or something, and women in the media are generally more attractive. I'm talking about females in the real world -- at the supermarket, on the street, at Walmart, driving that minivan next to you on the highway, and so on.

Am I the only person who watched the Australian Open this year?? I mentioned above the types women I find attractive -- voluptuous sorts, all of them, and all prettier than Maria -- but I'm telling you, I thought Maria's rear end at the AO was looking unbelievably, achingly, sexy. Seriously. It drove me wild everytime I saw her -- so sue me for thinking that, call me crazy, call me immature, call me a Top Gun loving homosexual, I don't care -- but I'm just calling 'em like I see 'em. Look at the photo I posted, watch some tape of her matches. The girl had beautiful curves at the AO, and I shall go to my grave knowing this in my heart. And her hair looked pretty too, dag nabit.

I disagree with CC here, too. I hope you are not choosy, and will most definitely take any port in a storm.

Heycal, what can I even say, other than I am a little curiously disturbed that you were "aching" through the AO. I feel that there are more than 2% of the general population who are better looking than Maria, and I am referring to plain, old, everyday non-celebrities. I personally do not find George Clooney in the least attractive - there is absolutely nothing about him that does anything for me. I also believe that the percentile of Joes out on the street who are better looking than Clooney is higher than 2%. I personally have a particular "type" of male that grabs my attention over all others.
I am amused at the banter regarding sitting around in cafes watching the meat pass by. That made me laugh. I do agree that MS is hardly repulsive - just a certain look which would attract some, but not all men.

I think CanadianChic and Mav are correct in that, a) I've already buried you and your teenage boy/girl loving fantasy and b) That Maria's a beady-eyed rodent (or whatever genus a fox belongs to), but...I'll humor you...just this once.

The media doesn't help either-both the fashion rags and mainstream stuff, like Hollywood.

You didn't enter that discussion because you aren't fully committed to the idea of racial equality. Not knowing about it is just an excuse. I made my comment in "your" thread to inject some levity into it...you know what that means, right? As for Serena's excuse, it's not. She's an athlete, pure and simple-neither she nor MS are ever going to be compared to Sophia Loren, but since we're in comparison mode here, I'll take tree trunk thighs to baby twigs-MS is a 74" twig.

Or with none at all, but she's an athlete, not an actress...one of these days, when she considers doing "films", she'll probably go and get the proper implants.

Yes, millions...considering that there are about a billion and a half people living here, millions of hotties is not an unreasonable estimate. You make up numbers like this "98%" and you're asking for an "honest" rebuttal? I'm honest in telling you that MS is no big deal...she's just marketed as one, and you've SWALLOWED the marketing hype, hook, line and sinker. How's it feel to be a fish, or at least 98% fish?

But if I've already been adjudged to have killed you in this debate, I don't need to score phoney points. But I will award you a point for use of those two words in one sentence. I'm particularly impressed with your use of "buttress".

The reason is that I'm a slobbering dog.

Yes, they're going to market the best player based on sex, as long as she looks even remotely female.

Most tennis players aren't pin-ups, so the one's who come along who are GOOD (i.e. don't look more masculine than Ernest Borgnine) are tagged as the "It girls"-it's all relative...compared to most everyone else on the tour, MS is attractive enough for the likes of you and your teenage co-horts. No accounting for taste. Sorry, I just don't share your unbridled enthusiasm at this artificially-produced sex symbol. To each his own-I never cared much for other Hollywood "marketed" beauties either...which is not to say that I wouldn't follow them like a slo...oh, never mind. I may be a slobbering dog, but I don't follow the pack-just my own slobber. How's that...You're PT Barnum's wet dream-and there are 100 million of you out there!

It's sad because in most cases, I'm only LOOKING.

    R.I.P. heycal.

No one was happy about it. I wished she had changed into a smock or something so I could concentrate on the tennis.

So now George "People magazine's sexiest man alive" Clooney, a man who makes millions a year primarily because of his looks, isn't attractive either and there are plenty of average Joe's more attractive? Well, you are entitled to your quirky notions of attractiveness and apparently fall into the 2% of women who think George Clooney isn't in the top 2% of men, but to have any sort of discussion here, we need to have some objective standards.... I really think you and Phil and Maverick66 have to get out of the house more and open your eyes and see what real people look like if you think Sharpapova and Clooney are ordinary looking. It's crazy talk.

Right, okay, me and 100 miillion other people who find MS attractive are "suckers"... Hey, any idea how I can get my hands on a beady-eyed, non-curvy, teenage boy-looking rodent like this because I'm stupid enough to buy into the hype?

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2006_swimsuit/models/06_maria_sharapova_7.html

Good luck fitting them into your Japanese car.

It will be unnecessary. By the time she's ready for films, her breasts will look just fine considering the promise they're showing here:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2006_swimsuit/models/06_maria_sharapova_21.html

I didn't make up the 98% figure. It's from a study conducted by the Rand Corporation during a three week period last fall.

If there's a chance of me swallowing this kind of snapper in the sea, I'm quite happy being a fish:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2006_swimsuit/models/06_maria_sharapova_10.html

If you're resorting to citing Maverick66's opinion to strengthen your position, you're in serious trouble... Judging by this photo along with so many others, I'd say reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated:
