Maria wasn't airbrushed while wiggling that fine caboose on my TV at the AO for two weeks.

I hate to break it you, Maverick66, but because you and a couple of posters in this thread don't think Maria is attractive doesn't mean I "lose" the argument over her attractiveness. I'd say the 20 million dollars a year she makes based in a large part on her good looks is more compelling evidence than Phil's preference for thunder thighs.

Oh heck, let's poll it. The results will be meaningless, of course, but then, so is this thread and most of the other threads, so what the heck...

Heycal, I never said she was ugly. I simply said that if Phil does not consider her attractive (and Mav and many, many others) that does not mean that there is something wrong with them. They have their own idea of what they find attractive - so that in itself is the standard for them. It doesn't matter that Clooney was voted sexiest man of the year - if I don't find him attractive then that is my standard. Do you see what I am saying? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - not in the eye of someone else who feels they are a goddess.

As for the pictures, she does look very nice there. It's amazing what world-class make-up artists, studio make-up and airbrushing will do. Have you never seen the pictures of celebrities without having themselves all done up at the red carpet? Just hanging out, walking the dog or grocery shopping? These "stunners" would appear to fit into the 98% very easily. That's why Max Factor is every woman's friend. I feel that if you need make-up to look beautiful on the outside, you're not beautiful - natural beauty is the key. A poll? lol. Excellent!! I think you know how we feel about polls, but 'fill yer boots'. I will keep in mind the age of the voters as I watch the action unfold (American Pie anyone?).

Last point - if you have to push your chest together with your arms to create the appearance of cleavage, then you have none.

I think it DOES mean there is something wrong with them. Very, very wrong...

I already dealt with this point in a previous post. If we want to have a discussion of beauty, and apparently we do, then we need to search for things beyond one's own personal (and in your case quirky) preference in order to buttress (ka-ching!) our arguments. Without supporting evidence in the form of Clooney being voted the sexiest man alive and Sharapova selling swimsuit calendars, it would be like comparing the taste of apples and oranges. Similarly, how can we discuss whether Top Gun is a gay film or not if all someone needs to say is "I didn't find it gay" to somehow be proof enough that it isn't? That wouldn't be much fun...

I already mentioned that I thought she looked terrific on my non-airbrushed television. Moreover, and this is a key point, we generally see Maria looking her WORST -- sans significant make-up and sweating and straining. That's natural beauty, baby. How many other female celebrities have to endure close-ups of them sweating and straining and possibly anxious about the outcome of an athletic contest? How many ordinary women would look better than her under those trying circumstances? (According to the Rand Corporation study, only 2%). Would you, as a fellow female, want to be photographed and videotaped under that most vulnerable and non-airbrushed spotlight?

Actually, I don't know how you feel about polls. But judging by the tone of that sentence, I think I can guess.

Age has nothing to do with this. Beauty is beauty. I'm an old man and find her hot, and I know other old men, and old women, who think she is very attractive as well. Plus I see that Duzza and Gorilla, two guys who won't be mistaken for AARP members anytime soon, are on record as finding Maria "not very attractive". (They may feel differently after puberty.)

It's called accentuating the postive. So please don't make me hunt around on the internet for pictures of Jayne Mansfield pushing her breasts together or something. (I saw footage of Anna Nicole Smith doing just that on TV last night, and she wasn't exactly a candidate for implants.)

Anyway, no one's saying Maria needs a heavy duty support bra, but thems are fine lil cupcakes she's sportin' there...

Sorry Frodo. My point is that if you need to wear tons of make-up to look "beautiful" then you don't fall into the top 2% of people on the planet as was suggested. I wear make-up as well, but feel that make-up enhances, not creates. When it is used to "create" beauty, then my opinion is that the person is not "beautiful" by the standards of the poll.

Well the term eewwww, certainly comes to mind here Heycal. Please bud, I'm starting to get visuals here!!

I believe the entire point is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and everyone has their own standard for what they consider attractive. You have agreed to this in past posts, so why are you not agreeing with me here?

I will admit that MS looks much better without than with make-up.

You contradicted yourself by stating she was budding, or whatever term you chose and then posted a link to her now admitted "cupcakes".

I would be more than happy having my pics taken under the above mentioned circumstances - but that has less to do with appearance and more to do with confidence. ;)

Heycal, we've all seen the calendar - including Mav. You are trying to make him change his standards and opinions again in order to agree with your idea of attractiveness. Tsk tsk.

Frodo, I'm very sorry if something that I said has offended you - I would never try to upset you. I personally think that beauty comes from within, and that no matter what you look like on the outside if your spirit and personality is ugly, it will penetrate your outer looks. I do feel that a natural beauty is preferable to a "created" artificial look - but that is my opinion only. Opinionated, yes but bad manners?

I post a dozen photos and it's only when you hear the word cupcakes you get "visuals"?

YOUR entire point is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My more nuanced point is that while that may be true in one sense, in order to have any sort of intelligent discussion and back and forth we need some objective standards and to put forth positions or arguments. Otherwise, you can say Brad Pitt is more handsome and I can say no, I think Radek Stepanek is, and the conversation is over right then and there. End of discusssion. That's boring to me. But then, I've already explained this simple concept two or three times already but you don't seem to get it.

Huh? I thought she needed all that make-up and airbrushing to even resemble a female...

That's not a contradiction at all. Her budding breast resemble yummy cupcakes. I didn't say juicy melons...

I think most women would feel otherwise. But hey, no one is stopping you from posting some pictures of yourself sweating it out on the tennis court. Let's see 'em!

Heycal, the visuals are not of Sharapova. They are of an admittedly "older man" aching for a very young woman and drooling over the "cupcakes". Women just find that a little gross - we know what you guys do in the privacy of your whatever, but we really don't want to hear about it.

Yeah, nice try Heycal. There will be no pics of me here as I am now repulsed as to the reactions pictures give.

I agree with you that a standard is needed, but my whole point, again, is that what is beauty to one is not to another. There is no way to set a standard of beauty on a forum full of people with very different tastes.

I thought it might be an "eeww" for the females but I said it anyway to amuse the guys, so there! (SOME of the guys, okay? I don't need to see any posts from some ass clown saying "I'm a guy and I wasn't amused by that".)

I do have a daughter. First guy who makes a remark about her cupcakes gets a POG over his head!

can we get a side by side comparison of your daughters cupcakes and MS.

i had to do it you know it was coming. but seriously i dont get why the all the sudden the female side of TW is disgutsted. i guess i get the old man thing but i doubt women stop thinking of young men the older you get.

I'm not sure how one can be both a red-blooded American and a father at the same time. Of course there's a double standard in this area!!!

But you've been such a bedrock of this thread from the beginning. How will we survive without you?:-(

Curves are curves. If he doesn't acknowledge that photo shows Maria with curves, than the word "curves" has no meaning.

Ouch!! Why so personal Heycal? My tennis is absolutely a disaster (although my coach would disagree). I will post a pic this summer, and I wear zero makeup when I play.

I agree with the double standard. Does your daughter hear you speak like that? Are you in the role of both father figure and red-blooded American male when her friends are around? I highly doubt it - I would hope you would exhibit a little couthe.

Your buddy Phil, who's older than the hills, repeatedly mentions in a dozen different posts how he would slobber all over Maria like a dog in his local Ruvu Hote-ru even though he doesn't even find her attractive and you criticize ME?

Hey, if you can employ a double standard, then so can I. I don't criticize Phil's posts or Phil....ever. ;) What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Ahh, I'm full of the cliches tonight.

You misinterpreted my meaning if you took that as an insult directed at you personally. My point was that not only would you be opening yourself to comments on your apperance if you posted a picture, but you would suffer the additional insult to injury of having people criticize your tennis as well because people always denigate the photos and vids of other posters playing. Get it?

Of course my daughter doesn't hear me speak like that. What part of double standard don't you understand?

Well, I'm certainly not joking about a double standard! It's absolutely necessary if a red-blooded American male wants to buttress his image as a sensitive and evolved father.

Ahhh, I see. So not only is it a double standard, but a bit of a double persona. Sweet. I believe in honesty all around, but I don't ache over boys half my age. And I am a red-blooded Canadian female.
I remember working once with an older female co-worker. She literally spent the entire night sweating over Russell Crowe and how hot he looked in one of his movies. She was only about ten years older than him, but the heat coming off her is a visual I choose to forget as well. Either way, it's still a moment in time that blinds you.

I meant to add that the reason I know the above to be true is because I'm one of those people. When I see one of those "rate my game" video threads, I like to post something like "I'd say you're a weak 3.0 at best" just to mess with them, and to continue the Talk Tennis tradition, regardless of how good they actually are. Sometimes I don't even watch the video and just write "You look like a strong 2.5 who needs to work on his ground strokes in order to progess to the next level" .;)

Just to keep 'em humble, eh Heycal? My coach progresses me too fast for my comfort - I remember the first time he had me play doubles, I would yell "Jesus" and "Bloody Hell" whenever the ball came my way (and they were taking it very easy on the newbie). Needless to say, he was more than a little embarassed of his "'fraidy cat" player and literally would hold me in place so I couldn't run from the ball. Ahh, good times. :p

Ok, I'll jump on the bandwagon with Heycal. I think Sharapova is HOT! Airbrushed, smairbrushed! She's a hottie! I honestly can't see how anyone can look at the pictures of her and say she's not hot. And some people think Serena is attractive?!?! WTH?!!? Yuuuuuucccccckkkkkk!

Not at all. For example, the final score at this year's Australian Open between Serena and Sharapova was 6-1, 6-2, 4-9.

Wow, this guy is still at it. Give it a rest already, heycal. I know you like to get the last word in, no matter what, but please...I biatch slapped you in this thread-proving without a doubt that you're PT Barnum's wet dream of a sucker, so what more do you want?

Oh, I see you actually went and made a POLL...c'mon, this obsession of yours is wearing thin. Uh oh, I see that your "theory" is pretty much getting slapped down in your poll thread too. I'm sure your basement bedroom is adorned with MS posters and all manner of paraphanalia, but please...don't bring that stuff HERE!

    Good luck in therapy.

I gave you several beatdowns already and you're still here? I thought we were following the format of a tennis tournament, and you were knocked out in straight sets in the round of 16 and had to go home and fondle your Serena doll, size XXL, while I went on to fight it out with CC in the finals founds.

What am I going to say, "Gee, Doc, I don't know what's wrong with me. For some strange reason I find this lanky, pretty, fit, sexy young Russian women attractive. Help me!"

One day ole Phil is going to wake up and realize the obvious: The reason that Maria Sharapova makes millions in looks-based endorsements isn't because we're all "suckers" -- it's because she's very attractive.

What part of "pretty" do you not understand?
