OK, so I'll go first... I voted for the Gladiators because they are/were a little bit rougher than the Wailers, for instance. Yet they kept the basic elements of the vocal trio, so commonly used in Jamaican reggae at that time, and other traditional elements. My favourite song has got to be Bongo Red, the epitomy of good roots reggae for me.

Great thread; impossible (personally-speaking) to cite favorite; so many to choose from; from the obvious: Marley, Wailers, Bunny, Jimmy Cliff, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh, Sly/Robbie on down to Israel Vibration, Toot/Maytals, Gladiators, etc.. to the not-so-obvious....

    misc:
...anything off the Trojan Records label (e.g. DJ Spooky "In Fine Style: 50,000 Watts of Trojan Records" ..... "tall 'n handy, sweet like candae...hit me now~!")

Anyone familiar with an earlier reggae group "The Techniques?" They featured two schsweet vocalists (Slim Smith/Pat Kelly) who brought The Impressions type of harmonies into the reggae mix; this during the rocksteady era in Kingston. Both went on to launch impressive solo projects afterwards.

Thought I'd just start a reggae thread and used the poll option, with only a set number of options. Many good artists out there, as the examples you have mentioned. Out of the many lesser known artists, Junior Byles is pretty cool.
