Return of an old love! The Diablo Mid!

After playing with a few rackets over the past 7 years, I was considering play testing some new ones. Then remembered how I enjoyed my Diablo mids. Took them out for a test spin and forgot why I stopped using them to begin with.

it’s like reconnecting with a past love. It really has everything for me, power, spin, control, feel.

anyone else return to an old love?

I used the Diablo mids for a while and liked them because they were easier to use than the Wilson 85s, but then with Federer and his Wilson 90 appeared the Diablo mids went to the closet until I got wrist problems 2 years ago, I pull these out again and happy I didn't sell them before. Small head size, thin box beam, 16x20 pattern (actually I prefer 16x18 or 16x19 more), decent weight makes it really a joy to use than the Wilson 90s with comparable results. Still using them as major hitting frame.

Pro Staff 6.0 95. The only racquet I've ever been truly happy with. Current match stick is a DR98 which I love, it's brilliant. But, it doesn't have the feel of the 6.0. I'm at an age now where I'm not very likely to break a frame but it still scares me that one might slip out of my hand and crack, which puts me off using the 6.0 as my every day racquet.

The Prince NXG mid holds a permanent spot in my personal racquet hall of fame. Even if I don't play with them every time I hit the courts, they're fantastic for reminding me to how move and set up on the ball to hit it well. Stock weight with string and an overgrip is right around 13.0 oz., but they were also built with a comfortable amount of head-light balance.

I also occasionally dust off one of my old Head LM Prestige mids. Both of these frames really hold me to a higher standard - if I try to get away with being lazy or late to the ball, they just don't produce decent shots.

So now I remember why I stopped using them, LOL. I had a day that was a little off and the demanding mid exasperated my issues. I will continue to work on my game and use the Diablo mid.

Not to mention the grommets cost almost as much as another racket would ...

Yeah the Diablo is a sick stick no doubt . When your on that stick can just blow opponents off the court .but if your just a bit off . Every shot hits the fence . Weird too cause it’s a small mid . But dude it packs a wallop especially if your late on the FH

I used a modified Diablo mid as my regular racquet for a while about 10 years ago.

Mine was cutdown to 26.5”, with 25g of silicone injected into the 10 and 2 zone on the hoop. With some extra lead tape above the top of the handle to bring specs to 365sw, 12.55” balance, and 13.5” weight. that thing was solid feeling and good for all-court play. I strung it with kevlar/poly at 45 lbs.

A friend bought it from me when I made the mistake of letting him try it out.

Diablo mid was great. One of the best feeling racquets I hav hit with. I regret selling mine - I had 3 along with plenty of grommets. At the time I wasn't quite strong enough to use them effectively, so while I loved the feeling - I didn't love the feeling of losing. I have improved enough that had I kept them I would be able to use them effectively now.

I keep a Phantom 93p in the bag now.

This thread spurred me to read the old TW review of this classic. I want one but yes, hard to find. Time for a reissue? Seems like there really is a market for less expensive remakes that look like the originals even if they don’t exactly hit like them.

I was smart enough not to sell my 4 matched. We will see how long I stick with it.

The Diablo mid is surprisingly powerful for a mid. I gave them away years ago b/c I had trouble controlling my shots, but I never tried full poly. Maybe I should give them a try again.

I have owned 3 of them. The specs varied a lot. The lightest was about 325sw stock. The heaviest was low 350s sw stock.

Damn ! I wish I had a pic of this !!!
Few years back , before I discovered how to download pics on here ... I had a Japanese fella come into my shop with a Diablo to be strung , he was a non member, never saw him
Before or after but his Diablo was WHITE !!
well not all white . Just imagine where the black is on the frame , just replace that black with white . The font work on the US retail Diablo is white , his font work was black .
It looked super cool man. Of course I couldn’t hit with it . But after I strung it up I tested it with some ball bounces.. felt the same as any Diablo . Just white . Super neato ..
